Greetings and congratulations on your Advanced Green Belt. Your
commitment to practice shows in your solid skills and deepening
knowledge. This next step begins your Black Belt Year, a time of even
greater development and dedication to training.
By now, you should have already received your Black Belt Book. The
Book details a years worth of assignments to help you develop as a
martial artist and as a person. Please speak with your instructor at anytime for help, guidance or clarification of any part of these assignments.
On a personal note, I strongly advise beginning work on your
assignments as early as possible. Having once procrastinated on a goal
of 10,000 pushups in a year, I ended up pumping out 400 a day in the
last weeks prior to testing. These assignments are far easier and much
more valuable if completed over time.
Congratulations again and welcome to your Black Belt Year.
Sincerely,
Jason W. Brick

I will apply myself to the study of karate.
I will push myself consistently
to develop my mind, spirit and body
beyond what I once believed
to be my limits.
I will think with clarity.
I will move with purpose.
I will act with love.
I am a martial artist.
I will achieve these goals.

Welcome
ESSAYS
Bushido is the Way of the Warrior, or rather one expression of the
Warrior. Through history, this way has been celebrated by men and
women from many cultures. Early cultures included the Zulus, Vikings,
Toltecs and Roman Legionnaires. Later came Samurai, Knights and
Musketeers. Today, the same values can be found in Soldiers, Police,
Firefighters and Teachers.
Regardless of culture of origin, the Warrior can be summed up with two
words: Passion and Responsibility.
To even consider becoming a warrior requires us to care deeply about
personal development, about our values, about other people and about
the world. This passion fuels our training. It enables us to be the sort
of people who can stand up and make a difference.
A Warrior also accepts responsibility. Whether youre standing on a
line of battle or working a difficult job to make a difference, a Warrior
steps forward. A Warrior is always willing to look at a situation
requiring change and say I will make that change.

Today there are literally dozens of senior Kenpokas who call themselves
Master. Some are genuine. Others are not. An incomplete list of
solid, master-level practitioners includes Jeff Speakman, Dian Tanaka,
Lee Wedlake, Larry Tatum and Frank Trejo. There are many others
who could claim the title, but choose not to, simply preferring to be
called a martial artist.
Within the context of our own system, a few people require special
mention.
Bruce Juchnick, 10th degree black belt and head of the Kosho-Ryu Kenpo
system. Hanshi Juchnick is considered by many to be the best living
practitioner of the martial arts. He is also known for his
near-encyclopedic knowledge of martial arts styles and history. Mr.Juchnick is also one of the few people still living to have trained and
studied with James Mitose, one of the revered ancestors of Kenpo in
America.
Al Tracy, 10th degree black belt, founder and head of Tracys Chinese
Kenpo. Grand Master Tracy began training with Ed Parker, eventually
helping him to develop his American Kenpo system. In time, he split
with Mr. Parker to form his own organization. This group went on to
become the largest chain of martial arts studios in America during the
1980s.

Bill Packer, 9th degree black belt and founder of American Kenpo Karate
Academies. Mr. Packer built an organization of over 30 schools in 8
states and Mexico. During his life, he taught Kenpo to thousands of
men, women and children. Also a well-known kickboxing trainer, he
produced over a dozen international champions over the course of his
career. Mr. Packer died in the summer of 2005, leaving behind a strong
organization and powerful legacy.
Dave Hebler, 10th degree black belt and founder of the Original
American Kenpo Karate Association. Mister Hebler was one of Ed
Parkers original black belts and went on to be bodyguard for Elvis
Presley. He was the original owner of the studio that became our home
dojo in Hillsboro, Oregon. Currently retired from the Kenpo
community, Mr. Hebler actively teaches and advocates for womenssafety nationwide.

Discernment.
Discernment is making good decisions. Theres an old story about a
reporter interviewing a very successful man:
Sir, whats the secret to your success?
Good decisions.
And how do you make good decisions?Experience.
And how do you gain experience?
Making bad decisions.
In our training, we make mistakes without consequences. This is good
in that it allows us to make our bad decisions in a safe and supportive
environment. In the world, bad decisions often carry severe
consequences.
Martial arts training can help us make good decisions through patience,
awareness and self-confidence. The long road of martial arts study gives
us the perspective to understand that not all solutions are immediate.
Sensitivity training helps us to build awareness of our surroundings
before committing to action. Our growing skills lead to a self-confidence
that helps us decide without the distractions of unproductive doubt or
worry about outside judgment.
Trusting our training helps us to trust ourselves.

What is mastery? As brown belts, we begin to think concretely about
the term. Our own system does not include the title Master, but the
concept is vital to training.
Perfection is a goal wise to aspire to, but unwise to demand of yourself.
Similarly, Mastery is an imaginary end of your training journey. We can
keep our sights on it as we would a beacon, but to hold ourselves to
that standard can only mean disappointment and ultimate failure.
This idea of Mastery goes beyond our combat training. Mastery includes
mastery of self, mastery of our situation and eventually mastery of our
own lives.

Act with love.
Of the three basic principals of Bushido Kenpo, this is the most
important. It is also the most likely to fundamentally change our lives
for the better. To act with love can clear the mind of troubling
thoughts, improve our health and sense of worth. It can take our
personal relationships to a new level.
Acting with love means to keep kindness in mind whenever we interact
with another person. If your spouse or child does something annoying,
even hurtful, you can avoid a fight by keeping love in mind. Acting with
love allows us to forgive people for slights and insults.
Like so many other aspects of karate, the concept is simpler to
understand than to keep in practice. It can be helpful to consider what
you deserve and what somebody intends.
You deserve to feel good about your relationship with the people you
love. Even when those behave inconsiderately. Do you deserve to
spend an evening fretting over a comment you overheard at the office?
Not likely. Do you deserve to trust that your good friends respect you
and care for you, even if they might have said something snide? You
betcha.

Intent is another important aspect. Often we take things personally that
rarely have anything to do with us. Some idiot gives you the finger in
traffic. Was that meant personally? Nope. That person doesnt even
knowyou. They gave you the finger, because they were in a bad mood
over things in their life that have nothing to do with you. If your
husband comes home and snaps at you, thats likely because of
something that happened at work. Most of the things that insult or
slight us in daily life have nothing to do with us. If we remember that
intent and to act with love, we find many slights will slide right off us.
Of course, all this depends on surrounding yourself with supportive and
loving people. Author Ray Bradbury once wrote Consider your
friends. Do they believe in you, or do they stunt your growth with
ridicule and disbelief? If the latter, you have no friends. Go find some.

ESSAYS
The Brown Belt is linked with the Earth, with rocks and roots, and with
the Snake. The snake stylist takes the speed, intelligence and accuracy
and adds to it concealment and rooted power. As you begin to
understand and apply Chi to your movements, this vital life force
becomes a metaphorical poison to your attacker, informing your
motions with great power and vicious intent.
The Snake enters into combat only in the presence of a deadly threat.
As such, the Snake has no opponents, nor any attackers. A Snake fights
only against enemies, inflicting as much damage as possible in the
smallest amount of time with the least risk or harm to himself and those
he protects.
The concealment of the snake relies on surprise and awareness. As anadvanced martial artist, you have trained your awareness to the point
that most potential problems are evident before they happen. You can
use this advance warning to slip away without incident. If escape isnt an
option, you can use that advance warning to set yourself up for a
surprise attack.
Rooted power comes from connectedness with the ground. Low
stances, heavy body and moving one step at a time provide power. As
your techniques become more complex and difficult, it remains
important to remember your principals of power: solid stance,
marriage of gravity, backup mass and kiai.

BASICS & CONCEPTS
Grafting
Is the term for something youve already practiced. Many techniques
include opportunity to transition into another technique, either to alter
the technique or continue the attack. Take for example the following
pairs.
Thrusting Salute Bow of Compulsion
Clutching Feathers Five Swords
Twin Kimono Reversing Mace
Flight to Freedom Wrist Lock Flow II
Heavy Body Principal
Moving with weight low and from the hips generates power and stability.
Take the rag doll motion from your dragon style and drive from below.
Hitting with the entire planet.
Move Twice
When manipulating another body, move twice. The first motion places
the attacker in a position of discomfort. As they adjust, move a second
time while the attacker is in motion and therefore weightless.
