Location of the Chippewa people• The Chippewa are a group of indigenous people in North

America, mostly in Minnesota, Michingan, North Dakota, Wisconsin and in the southern part of Canada.

For hundreds of years before the arrival of Europeans, the Chippewa Indians lived in the Great Lakes region of North America, near Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan.

Before the name of the tribe was anglicized and they were called OJIBWE.

A part of the Chippewas or Ojibwe lived around the Great Lakes and another part of them moved to the westward Plains.

Ways of gathering foodThe Great Lakes Chippewa men

were mostly fishermen, but also great hunters and farmers, whereas the women were mostly gahterers of nuts, berries, but also herbs, used in medicine.

The women cultivated beans, corn, sqash, potatoes.

The Plains Chippewa were buffalo hunters, using hunting tools, such as: bows, arrows and seldom spears.

They did no farming.

HomesThe Great Lakes Chippewa lived in Tipis made of wood and animal skins.

The Plains Chippewa lived in Wigwams made of birch bark.

Chippewas are linguistically related to the Blackfoot cultural group.

Children’s favorite game

The Moccasin Game: The Moccasin Game was a noisy game. You had to get permission from the village elders to play the Moccasin Game. To play, you needed four moccasins, a pebble, and a stick. The players were divided into two sides, the finders and the keepers.

Clothing

*The people in this tribe used to wore buckskin or buffalo skin clothing. *Men wore breechcloth and women prairie moccasins. *During wartime men wore long hair in scalplok and braided in peacetime.
