Reviewing your progress is important!

• Regular reviews will ensure that you are making progress in your set targets.

• You must provide relevant evidence of your progress if the review is to be useful in improving your performance.

What can you use for evidence?

• Your training diary or log book – this will contain a wealth of information.

• Other documentation – e.g. fitness test results, coach reports, match results, press reports and so on.

• Video evidence and taped discussions – these are particularly effective when linked to your practical performance. ‘Before’ and ‘After’ videos can allow useful comparison.

Progress reviews

• Carry out reviews regularly – for instance, at the end of every month.

• Always carry out the review by referring to the goals and targets you have set.

• Change the goals set if the review proves that this is necessary.

• Do not carry out your reviews in isolation – make sure your coach, trainer or tutor is involved.

• Always use reliable evidence to support your review – for instance, fitness test scores or match results. Base any changes on facts.

• Record any outcomes and decisions that emerge from the review – for instance, a change in diet or the training schedule.

An example of a review meeting

A review meeting showed that match performance tails off after 20 minutes.

The evidence for this was:

• personal comments in training diary

• coach observation

• low score in multi-stage fitness test.

The review decisions were:• to increase the time spent on endurance work – retry multi-stage fitness test in 4 weeks • to investigate diet – possibly too little carbohydrate intake• to investigate psychological issues – possibly a lack of mental ‘toughness’• to use video analysis of the last 20 minutes in the next series of games.

Reviewing your progress

Progress can sometimes appear to be slow or even non-existent.

Don’t worry!

Change is sometimes slow to happen. Don’t expect miracles – some results may take weeks to materialise.
