Brunnshög har en lång historia. Vet du vad som har
funnits på platsen för Lunds nya stadsdel? Arkeo-
logerna gjorde stora utgrävningar här inför bygget
av den nya stadsdelen. Vänd blad och se efter vad
vi hittade!
Brunnshög has a long history. Do you know what
was once on the site of this new district of Lund? Ar-
chaeologists conducted large-scale excavations
here when the new neighbourhood was to be built.

kyrka.
The first arena in the Lund areaFive thousand years ago there was no Lund, no östra
Torn, no Brunnshög – but there were people in the area,
stone Age farmers. right here, on a little ridge amidst
wetlands, they built a palisade: hundreds of closely pla-
ced wooden posts enclosing an area measuring about
50 by 100 metres.
What did they do in there? It was probably a combina-
tion of a livestock market, a cult site, and a place of as-
sembly. There the scattered population could meet to
sacrifice to the gods, to mark their cattle, to trade, and
to hold feasts. One can also view the palisade as a sta-
tus building that people in the area could be proud of,
as later inhabitants of Lund have been proud of their
cathedral.
An unusually long-lived farmIn the Iron Age, farms and villages often moved to new
sites. After a couple of generations the houses were di-
lapidated and the immediately surrounding land was
depleted. Then the farmers would take their livestock
and possessions and establish new settlements on virgin
soil.
here at Brunnshög, however, there was a family that
was unusually fond of its home, and only moved a few
metres at a time. They lived here for at least 800 years,
between 2,200 and 1,400 years ago. They buried their
dead on the adjacent hill. The people of Brunnshög
grew barley, wheat, oats, rye, and flax, and they kept
horses, cows, and sheep. Perhaps the grazing was es-
pecially good here? Or was it something else that
made them stay so long?
tecken.
A thousand years before the palisade was built, there were
stone Age farmers at Brunnshög. In a pit they deposited a lar-
ge collection of flint scrapers as a votive offering to the gods.
On some scrapers there was a little residue of natural limesto-
ne. Various symbols were carved in it. These symbols may have
been intended as decoration, but they may also have had a
magical meaning.
One of the early stone Age farmers was buried at Brunnshög.
Among the grave goods there were two flint axes of different
types and a large whetstone. The concave surface of the
whetstone shows that it was well used.

At the bottom of a well from the Iron
Age the archaeologists found an al-
most intact pot. It was used to hoist up
water from the well, until the day the
rope broke and the pot was lost down
the well. The pot is unusual in that it has
an oval cross-section, whereas most
pots at this time were round.
During parts of the Iron Age people used clay blocks as a kind of portable heat sour-
ce, in roughly the same way as people in later times warmed up beds with hot bricks.Fo
