Good Attachment versus Poor Attachment

Poor Attachment and improper breastfeeding techniques cause common problems experienced in breastfeeding which are enumerated below:

1. Sore nipple2. Engorged breast3. Inflamed breast

Sore nipples

Cracked and painful nipples

Management: Expose nipple and allow to air dry

Prevention: Wear cotton nursing bra

Engorged breasts

Feeling of tension and fullness in the breasts

Management: Apply warm compress while feeding

Prevention: Wear supportive nursing bra

Inflamed breasts Often called mastitis; a bacterial infection

Management: Breastfeed and/or express breast milk on

unaffected breastTake an antibiotic

Prevention: Personal breast hygiene and healthy sexual

practicesProper breast emptying

How to accomplish Good Attachment?

Make sure the baby’s body is facing toward you and his/her back is straight.

Hold breast in one hand. Do not squeeze it.

Tickle or gently stroke side of baby’s lips with your nipple to open his/her mouth wide open.

Baby’s tongue should be under the nipple.

Baby’s mouth should cover half of the areola while latching on.

Baby’s lips turned out and not rolled in.Baby’s chin should be pressed against

your breast.Baby’s nose should touch the breast.

Things to avoid when breastfeeding

Scissor-hand position – It blocks areola and the passage of milk. Instead of doing this, place your hands under your breast in a C position.

***Scissor-hand position can be used during breastfeeding compression. This is usually done if the baby stops sucking

because he/she falls asleep or breastfeeding is too long.

Avoid pacifiers and artificial nipples – Delay introducing these new things to your baby for at least 4-6 weeks. It could cause nursing problems like decreases amount of baby’s sucking, decrease milk supply and your baby could also get use to the hard nipple.

Avoid Stress – Breastfeeding uses a lot of calories and could make you feel very tired after. Get a lot of sleep.

Proper Breast Care when breastfeeding

Air dry each nipple after feeding.Avoid harsh soaps. They can only dry and

disrupt healthy skin.Rinsing with water is already sufficient in

cleansing the breasts. Pat dry.Change breast pads when already moist.

Breastfeeding ointments, creams, lotions and lubricants are really not recommended.

Wear a comfortable supportive nursing bra.
