SummerSing! “A CelEbration of song
and rhythm”
Jan 27th—30th, 2012
With
Tania Bosak (Australia)
Julian Raphael (Wellington)
Max Maxwell (Auckland)
at
Kawai Purapura Retreat Centre
Albany
Hi Lovers of Singing. I’m excited to
present SummerSing which offers you a
weekend of community, rich with singing,
rhythmic movement, percussion and more...
We have an outstanding leadership team who
will draw from traditions as wide and varied
as Gypsy/Romany, Haitian, African, Pacific
and South American with a strong rhythmic
theme (voice, body and percussion) running
through the weekend
It will be held at the lovely Kawai Purapura
Retreat Centre in
Albany, with both
residential and non-
residential options.
There will be time
to enjoy the
grounds or have a swim in the pool.
Not the least of the weekend’s delights will
be delicious vegetarian food prepared for us
by Audrey and Daniel of InterspaceArtFood
(www.interspaceartfood.com/food.html)
I look forward to
welcoming you to a
wonderful and
enriching weekend of
community music.

Tania Bosak is a percussionist, vocalist, actor
and certified Advanced TA KE TI
NA Rhythm Teacher. She has
studied African dance, Indian
Classical Dance and various drum-
ming styles in Senegal, the USA
and Australia, including Haitian,
Brazilian and Cuban percussion.
As a polyrhythm specialist,
Tania’s workshops invite partici-
pants into the world of simulta-
neous perception. Entering into voice and rhythm from a
deeply relaxed place becomes the foundation for feeling
and performing music from a centred and profound sense
of self. The rhythmic body and voice are key in unlocking
the creative improviser in us all!
Julian Raphael is a musician and music educator
who works alongside children and
grown-ups with a philosophy and
teaching style that is greatly in-
fluenced and informed by the
music of the world's cultures. He
works in Wellington and around
the country running workshops
for schools, teachers and commu-
nities and he facilitates the En-
sembles in Schools programme for
Chamber Music NZ. Julian is the musical director of the
200 strong Wellington Community Choir; now in its 6th
year. Earlier in 2011 Julian took part in a three-week
study and concert tour of South Africa where he learnt
a wide range of well-known contemporary church and
community songs.
...and Max loves nothing more than to indulge his passion for bring-
ing people together to create joy and community through
singing. After a 7 year stint as director of Heaven Bent
Gospel Choir, he founded the now 3 year old open to all
SingForJoy Choir and this year has extended the joy
into strumming - running ukulele groups and offering
workshops throughout New Zealand.
