12019|2020 CONCERT SEASON

NSO photography by Robert Nowell
welcomeWelcome to the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s 2019/20 season! We have worked incredibly hard to give you a new season of which we are all particularly proud. Canadian talent features throughout the year, with engaging performers and innovative music. Three alumni from the CBC’s “Hot 30 under 30” list will be introduced to Niagara audiences as we continue our commitment to emerging artists. Cellist Cameron Crozman will open the 2019/20 season performing Dvorák’s epic Cello Concerto on a concert that also features up and coming young composer Alice Hong. Niagara Falls native Jarred Dunn will also make his debut with the NSO, joining us for Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23. Beethoven turns 250 years old in 2020; we start this milestone year in January with a concert celebrating his work, including his iconic Symphony No. 5 and the rarely performed Triple Concerto, featuring Canada’s renowned Gryphon Trio. We are also proud to feature suites from Kevin Lau’s ballets Le Petit Prince and Dark Angels, as well as some of our most exhilarating orchestral repertoire: Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, Respighi’s Pines of Rome and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe (with Chorus Niagara).
Canadian composers also feature heavily in our concerts for the entire family. We present Scott Good’s multi-media work An Ocean Called Owen, with the composer himself appearing as a guest artist, and Kevin Lau’s Le Petit Prince becomes an enchanting children’s suite, bringing both this wonderful tale and score to life for audiences of all ages.
In our most ambitious POPS! season to date, a concert performance of Leonard Bernstein’s complete West Side Story is sure to be a thrilling opening. Soaring melodies and compelling rhythm, all with a cast of singers backed by your Niagara Symphony Orchestra, promise an experience to remember. The holidays this year will be a completely different experience featuring your NSO centre-stage as we perform Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker ballet in its entirety — a rare opportunity to hear this incredible score on a symphony stage. “Music of the Knights” will showcase three of Great Britain’s greatest songwriters, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Paul McCartney, and Sir Elton John, and the season closes with guest conductor Jeffrey Pollock, who will turn the NSO into a Big Band as we explore the infectious music from the Big Band Era.
We look forward to welcoming you to every concert, and can’t wait for 2019/20 to begin. Thank you for your continued loyalty and support; we do this for you, see you at the Symphony.

Dvorák Cello Concerto
Brahms Symphony No. 1
Revel in sumptuous music for orchestra and the warm, almost human, voice of the cello. The NSO opens this season with jewels of symphonic and solo repertoire: Dvorák’s masterpiece for cello and the magnificent first symphony by Dvorák’s friend and mentor, Brahms. There’s another scintillating gem in the crown: rising Canadian star, cellist Cameron Crozman.
Brian Baty, double bassBradley Thachuk, conductor
Prokofiev Symphony No. 1 “Classical”
Rota Divertimento Concertante
Haydn Symphony No. 104 “London”
Hear the symphony in all its glory! The NSO juxtaposes two symphonic masterpieces: the “London” Symphony by Haydn, father of the symphony, and Prokofiev’s “Classical”, his 20th century tribute to his symphonic ancestors. Nina Rota’s cinematic work for double bass is full of exquisite colours and textures, an elegant delight featuring NSO Principal Bass Brian Baty.

Triple Concerto
Symphony No. 5
Beethoven wrote these epic works in one turbulent decade (1803-1810), a testament to his inexorable, triumphant genius. The colossal 5th became known as the “Symphony of Destiny”, its famous “V-for victory” opening underscoring countless momentous events since its premiere. The NSO proudly welcomes Canada’s award-winning Gryphon Trio to celebrate the undeniable brilliance of this magnificent composer.

Lau Dark Angels
Barber Violin Concerto
Sibelius Symphony No. 5
Once deemed unplayable, Barber’s violin concerto is now a commanding mainstay of the violin repertoire. The fiendishly challenging finale is handled with aplomb by our gifted soloist Jinjoo Cho — both are simply irresistible! The NSO presents Kevin Lau’s enigmatic Dark Angels, and the orchestra’s Sibelius cycle continues with the unbridled romance of Symphony No. 5.

Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2
Rising from the ashes after the catastrophic premiere of his first symphony, composing in secret, Rachmaninoff made a jubilant return a decade later with his Symphony No. 2. The soul of a complex artist is laid bare in this impassioned work. In Pines of Rome, Respighi evokes the subtle character of trees throughout his beloved Eternal City.

The 30-year old Mozart’s humour and virtuosity are revealed in a dazzling performance by guest soloist Jarred Dunn, Niagara Falls native and 2018 CBC “Hot 30-Under-30” Artist. Lau Le Petit Prince: Concert Suite
Ravel Daphnis et Chloé (complete ballet)
Both created for the ballet, now gracing the concert stage, these works are separated by a century, but share a lyrical interpretation of archetypal stories. Ravel’s impressionist retelling of Greek myth transcends time; Lau translates into eloquent music the charming French tale of a boy who can do what others cannot: see with his heart.

Leonard Bernstein’s
“West Side Story” in Concert
Inspired by Shakespeare, contemporary in tone, more relevant than ever: the NSO presents Leonard Bernstein’s legendary West Side Story in concert. Passionate romance, star-crossed lovers and fierce loyalties blaze across the stage in a tour-de-force performance. Hear all your favourites: America; Gee, Officer Krupke; The Rumble; Tonight and the achingly lovely Somewhere.

Lau selections from Postcards from a Blue Planet
Good An Ocean Called Owen
He heard his name called softly; how strangely compelling. Owen lives deep in the dirt “where the longest roots reach, and the sun don’t shine”. For him the ocean is strange and forbidding. Composer Scott Good narrates as Owen conquers his fear to discover marvels in the wide world: sunlight, towns, people and that immense ocean.

Lau Le Petit Prince
A boy and his rose on a tiny planet spinning in the vast universe. The delicate essence of Saint-Exupéry’s classic is expressed in the universal language of music, a concert suite with narration exploring a fundamental truth: “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly: what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
