The Jewish calendar has periods of time that highlight important aspects of the
Jewish experience. The most well known of these special segments is the Ten Days of
Awe, which begin with Rosh Hashanah and conclude with Yom Kippur. This is the time
of year when we are especially focused on the state of our spiritual affairs and how we
can return to living up to the teachings and values of Torah.
The “Three Weeks” is another of these special time periods that beings on
17 Tammuz and ends on 9 Av. This is a time when we mourn the loss of Jewish sover-
eignty in the Land of Israel when the Temples were destroyed; by extension, we mourn
the other calamities our people have experienced throughout our history.
The second night of Pesach begins a 50 day period known as the counting of
the Omer, and it culminates on Shavuot. This time frame reminds us of our ancestors’
liberation from Egypt and their journey to Mt. Sinai where we received the Torah from
God.
As the Israeli educator Abraham Infeld notes:
“There are very few celebrations or commemorations in the Jewish calendar
that aren’t part of a larger unit, a period of time that reflects a transition from
one state to another.”
In that vein, Infeld sees another period in the Jewish year that he feels deserves its
own designation. Infeld labels the period between Yom HaShoah (Holocaust
Remembrance Day) and Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), the “Nine Days of
We.” Holocaust Remembrance Day (27 Nisan; April 12 this year) marks the destruction
our people experienced at Hitler’s hands whereas Israel Independence Day
(4 Iyar, April 19 this year) marks the return of Jewish sovereignty.
The “Nine Days of We” in Infeld’s words,
“is a unit of time in which we commemorate the Jewish People’s collective
transition, the fundamental shift from destruction and powerlessness to
independence and sovereignty.”
Infeld challenges us to consider a phenomenon that, at first glance, seems rather
odd. Why do Israelis have a national commemoration for the Shoah, an event that did
not happen to Israelis and not in Israel? As he asks, “How many other states have a
national commemoration for an event that happened somewhere else?”
We American Jews can ask ourselves the same question. And we can ask ourselves
why we observe Israel Independence Day, when we don’t live there?!
The answer, Infeld suggests, is we observe these days because we Jews are a people.
We are connected to Israel, and vice-versa, and therefore celebrating her independence
matters to us. Similarly, we are connected to the Jewish people, past and present and

therefore, we observe Yom HaShoah, the catastrophe that affects us all as members of the Jewish People.
This period of time, the “Nine Days of We,” reminds us that we are part of something larger than ourselves and our
own community. One of the many great things about being Jewish is belonging to the collective Jewish People, our
heritage, our history, our memories, our celebrations and our values.
In April, we observe the trajectory from powerless to power, from catastrophe to redemption. On Friday, April 13 at
6:30 pm our grade 6 students will teach us what they are learning about the Holocaust, as we observe Yom HaShoah.
On Friday, April 20 at 8:00 pm, our Temple Sholom musicians will play at services as we commemorate Yom
Ha’atzmaut.
Please be sure to join us—Am Yisrael Chai! The People of Israel lives!

Dear TSWE Family,
Spring has finally sprung! And we have so many great events sprouting over the next few months. We want to make
sure everyone is aware of them and will join us:
Spring Boutique on Sunday, April 29th
from noon to 4pm.
Our committee is hard at work planning this event. As of this writing, we have over 20 vendors planning to
attend with products from Murano glass and scarves to pottery and purses. There will be baskets raffled
off that are chock full of sports tickets, restaurant vouchers, wines and other exciting products. The
timing of our Spring Boutique is not an accident – it is just a few weeks before Mother’s Day so come on
out and shop!
Temple Sholom’s new garden coming this May!
As you noticed, our rusty gated stump field is no more. With the generosity of Janet Eisenstein and the
Oettinger family, we have a beautiful foundation for a new garden. This was no small feat and we’re
thrilled to have the opportunity to create an area for us to gather and enjoy. The Green Team, along with
their focus on helping TSWE make more environmentally friendly, is leading the effort to landscape this
area with trees and plantings, including seating and a fire pit. Soon we will launch a digital campaign
allowing families to select parts of the landscape that they would like to sponsor, and then, a day for us
all to come together to get these plants in the ground. Please watch email updates for more information.
If you would like to join the Green Team, please reach out to Carolee Bol Rosenberg.
Celebrating of Rabbi Groffman’s Honorary Doctorate on June 2nd
.
Saturday evening, June 2nd
, we will have the celebration of all celebrations in honor of Rabbi Groffman’s
Honorary Doctorate recognizing his 25th
year as an ordained rabbi. Shoshana Bass and Yoel Borgenicht
are graciously opening their beautiful home, the Daybreak in Montclair, for us to host a cocktail party
and celebration. We hope everyone can attend and enjoy this special evening in honor of our wonderful
Rabbi. Stay tuned for details.
Please mark your calendars and get ready to ring in Spring with your congregational family! We look forward to
seeing you at these wonderful events!

When I first took Developmental Psychology courses in college, I learned about different stages of mental
development such as those of Piaget, Maslow, and Freud, and found it fascinating that certain milestones are universal.
When I studied sociology and generational studies, I began to understand that the different generations respond
differently based on circumstances in their lifetimes. These factors revolve around economic prosperity, world conflicts,
information and technology, and reactions to prior generations. I have made a conscious effort to communicate with
everyone based on the generation one belongs. This is not easy, but it is how I work hard to stay connected with all
members of our congregation.
Often, problems erupt from generations not understanding each other. This goes beyond the typical parent-child
angst. How does a generation that used a paper encyclopedia updated annually begin to understand a generation born
with an infinite amount of information constantly updated in its pockets? How does a generation which expects
crippling debt from university education comprehend a generation that did not require a college degree for quality jobs
that paid well? How about Israel? The majority of world Jewry living today was born after the Six Day War, June 1967
and Yom Kippur War, October 1973. These were the last major wars where Israel’s sovereignty was truly in jeopardy.
How can we understand what it was like to wonder if Israel, the dream of two thousand years, would survive one more
day?
It is so easy to belittle another generation due to a lack of understanding. Rather, the better thing to do is accept a
generation for what it is and evolve. We have done so already. We go back to our biblical and liturgical texts and find
new meaning for a contemporary day. Israel is no longer merely a place for our people’s salvation but a hotbed of
medical and technological innovations. We have to adapt our traditions to contemporary needs, since that is our true
heritage.
I am pleased to see that we at Temple Sholom regularly look inward to take stock of our current offerings, such as our
Religious School and Adult Education courses, Membership options, tackling Social Justice, and connecting with the
world outside our synagogue walls. We are engaging with the notion that we need to evolve, and as such we will be
around for many more years to come.

Cantor’s Choir Rehearsals
In order to help keep our synagogue and community safer, we have
partnered with the Community SecurityService (CSS), thecss.org., a volunteer
organization that works in close cooperation with law enforcement and the
organized Jewish community.
CSS will train volunteers in proven theoretical and practical security
methods and protocols that have successfully been used in the past to thwart
terrorist incidences. The training is excellent and intensive, taught by
professionals in the field, with opportunity for ongoing and advanced training
for those interested.
The observational and other techniques will be useful to you in your daily
life -on your commute to work, in a mall, attending events, etc.
No experience is necessary, and men and women are welcome to
volunteer. Volunteers will take two training classes and those interested in
being team leaders will do a total of six classes.
If we have enough interest, we will schedule an information session at
TSWE with CSS so potential volunteers can learn more about the training
program. Our goal is to have enough trained volunteers to take one shift a
month at services and other major Temple events. Please contact Rabbi
Groffman, rabbi@sholom.net or 973-239-1321 if you are interested.

“Mah nishtanah halailah hazeh mikol haleilot?”
ל הלילות כ ה מ לה הז י תנה הל ש .מה נ
“How is this night different from all other nights?”
These incredibly powerful and meaningful words are probably in the top five of all repeated phrases within the Jewish
religion and our people. Clearly the main focal point of the Passover Seder, the Four Questions provide the impetus for
the telling of the Story of Pesach, a story whose themes of survival, rebirth, spring and freedom resonate within us.
As a pre-cursor to the celebration of Passover, recently, Dr. Murray Spiegel, the renowned author of “300 Ways to Ask
the Four Questions” spoke to our children and their families about his life’s work in the creation of this unique text. With
over 325 languages, which include 22 ancient languages along with 37 Native American Languages and utilizing the
expertise of over 850 individuals from 102 countries, Dr. Spiegel explained to our students that one of the major
purposes of his work was to create a living document of languages related to this major festival that will live on forever
as currently, he indicated, “Every two weeks, a language dies.” From over 1 Billion people who speak Mandarin to the 3
people currently alive that speak Lenape (a native American Language from this area – think ‘Manhattan’), Dr. Spiegel
explained that there are approximately 7000 languages that are currently in use worldwide (including various sign
languages, brail and semaphore-flag languages) and of these, 27 of them have been written into current Haggodot that
we use within our Seder tables.
Interestingly, Dr. Spiegel began his presentation by telling the assembled audience “I didn’t even like foreign
languages, yet I published a book that has more foreign languages written in it than any other book ever published in
the history of publishing.” In other words, he taught us to “….never ever close a door, as you never know where you’re
going to wind up.”
On behalf of the students and staff of Temple Sholom of West Essex have a wonderful, happy and healthy Passover
filled with love, joy and peace with your family and friends.
To use a phrase from my ‘Yiddisher’ roots – “Azissen Pesach” – Have a Sweet and Happy Pesach!
And from my wife’s Middle Eastern/Arabic roots – “Eyd Fash Saeid” – Happy Passover!!

“Just Do It”
Nike has an intriguing slogan… “Just Do It.”
To many it means don’t overthink, don’t procrastinate,
take action. In the context of our Temple’s Legacy Circle,
it means if you’ve ever thought about leaving a gift to our
congregation in your estate, now is the time to talk to your
family about your wishes and to call your attorney or
financial advisor to make it happen. The gift is revocable
so if circumstances change and the funds are needed
elsewhere you can make a change in your estate. We hope
that won’t happen, but it should give you peace of mind so
that you can “Just Do It” today.

LET’S PLANT A GARDEN As most of you have noticed by now the old playground has been taken down and we now have this
wonderful open space. The Green Team has been busy at work planning out the area for us to
gather and enjoy the open space. It will feature shade trees, native pollinator plants, an herb garden,
and benches for sitting around a
fire pit where we plan to host
many Jewish celebrations.
We are deeply grateful to Janet

What is the
Caring Connection?
The Caring Connection
helps people at the
temple that are going
through a rough patch or
moving on a new path (happy or traumatic) in life. The
committee members help our temple family by making a
meal for a family or taking a person to temple, the doctor
or the grocery store. There are many elderly members
that need rides and/or a conversation. Sometimes a
phone call or a meal is just what is needed.
This committee operates mostly through email. An
email is sent to everyone on the committee list when help
is needed. Someone volunteers. It is a pick-and-choose
type of thing. Does that work for you?
If you would like to become involved,
please contact me through the temple or email me,
Dori Schwartz at jakejewel67@gmail.com.
Thank you to everyone who thinks of us through a
tribute. Your generosity helps us fund programs, send
meals to those in need, and present other activities
throughout the year. Dori R Schwartz

Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always
appropriate, welcomed and provide important revenue.
Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially
when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences, and
at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our
congregation.
