ronan and erwan bouroullec (h!ps://www.designboom.com/tag/ronan-and-erwan-bouroullec/) have joined forceswith swarovski (h!ps://www.designboom.com/tag/swarovski/) to bring new life to a historic site in central paris.situated in the basins of the rond-point des champs-élysées, six new fountains are composed of a central bronzemast on which suspended branches support an ensemble of crystal chains. the water rises through the mast, beforedescending through the crystal to fall into the basin along the last four meters of the fountain. each of the sixstructures rotate slowly, crea"ng a delicate choreography of light and water.

image © claire lavabre – studio bouroullec swarovski (h!ps://www.swarovski.com/) engineers spent a year developing a crystal which would meet all therequirements of the project — a material appropriate for outdoor use, resistant to shocks, and capable of integra"ngwater and light. a new patent was filed for this tailor-made crystal which is both light and delicate, yet ultra-resistantin an urban environment. thanks to cu#ng-edge technology, this new ma!er proves to be 30% lighter than standardcrystal.

image © claire lavabre – studio bouroullec with its robustness and fine-tuned engineering, it also meets the solidity and easy maintenance criteria required ofinstalla"ons des"ned for long-term, outdoor use. thanks to a silvering on the inside of the cylinders, the colors ofthe crystal vary depending on the seasons and the light at a given "me of the day or night. in this way, the ma!eralmost disappears to become a gentle vibra"on.

image © charles pé"llon (h!ps://www.charlespe"llon.com/) the first fountain on the historic site was created in 1817. deemed a disrup"on to traffic flow, the centrallyposi"oned fountain was demolished in 1854. in its place, six individual basins surrounding the roundabout weredesigned. these new fountains originally consisted of a bundle of reeds in cast-iron, from which the water flowed. in1932, master glass-maker rené lalique added glass and light to the structures.

image © studio bouroullec however, these ornamental addi"ons were sadly too fragile and were replaced in 1958 by the more sober androbust designs of max ingrand. in 1998, the advanced state of deteriora"on of ingrand’s pieces, coupled with thefaulty hydraulic system, led to the defini"ve shutdown of the fountains.

image © charles pé"llon in 2015, the mayor of paris, anne hidalgo, established fonds pour paris (h!ps://www.fonds.paris/), a privateorganiza"on whose aim is to ‘raise funds through patronage for the restora"on of parisian heritage and theemergence of contemporary art in public spaces.’ funded en"rely through patronage, and achieved in just threeyears, the rebirth of the six fontaines des champs-elysées is the first project led by the founda"on. ‘the best way toreinvent the city is to bring art into the public space and restore its heritage,’ says hidalgo.

image © charles pé"llon the project to bring the champs-élysées fountains back to life involved more than 250 people from 40 workshopsand companies. everything began with the restora"on of the basins and underground infrastructures, led by eau deparis (h!p://www.eaudeparis.fr/), the city of paris works division (heritage, roadside & environment) and thecompanies belle-environnement (h!p://www.belle-environnement.fr/), conserto (h!ps://conserto.pro/), segex(h!p://www.groupe-segex.com/), and automa"smes seguin (h!ps://www.automa"smes-seguin.com/).

image © charles pé"llon the ar"s"c design came next, steered from the bouroullec workshop in paris, followed by its implementa"on byatelier blam lemunier & meyer (h!ps://bl-am.fr/en/) in nantes, which orchestrated the interven"on of some 35companies including SACMO (h!p://www.sacmo.com/), la nouvelle fonderie gillet (h!ps://www.sn-gillet.fr/?lang=en) in albi, and LBI les bronzes d’industrie (h!p://www.lbi.fr/) in metz. at the same "me, the engineers atswarovski in wa!ens, austria worked in close collabora"on with the bouroullecs.
