− Many scholars will disagree about this prophecy as there

are two words that could potentially be used:

He would be born of a virgin

• Controversy - does the word virgin in this passageactuallymean"virgin"or" young maiden"?

•  Alma - to be strong, full of vigor, or arrived at the age

of purity

• Bethulah - a maiden living in seclusion in her parents'

house and still a long way from matrimony1

• Isaiah7:14ThereforetheLORDhimselfwillgiveyouasign.Behold,thevirginshallconceiveandbearason,andshall

 − Rahab - Joshua 2:1-24

•  A harlot before she married Salmon, gave birth to Boaz

husband, married Boaz and gave birth to Obed

 − Bathsheba - 2 Samuel 11:1-27

• Had an adulterous affair with King David and became

pregnant.Theylosttheirrstchild.

 − Mary - Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 1:26-56

• Being pregnant outside of wedlock was an extreme sin in

the eyes of the Jewish elite at this time. This would be one

of the most shameful ways for the Messiah to be born in

their eyes.

The culmination of Luke's Genealogy • Thephrase"sonofAdam,thesonofGod"wouldhave

given theGentile audience of Luke a great deal of

encouragementbecauseitemphasizesthatallpeopleareequal.

He would be born in Bethlehem

−   The Census of Luke 1 is often argued as having neverhappened because the historian Josephus put Quirinius as

governor in 6 AD, but recent discoveries found documents

placing Quirinius as governor in 7 BC as well.
