Books and Ebooks in RDAKathryn LybargerRDA Camp 2013

Our policy so far…

• Take what you see (we will see)

• Accept what you get

• Add a GMD for non-print materials

Core• RDA defines some elements to be core

– Publication date

• Some elements are core if others are not identified– Copyright date

• Some are core for LC-PCC– Media type

• Some elements are core for LC– URL for an ebook

Policy decision…

• For original cataloging, should we attempt to identify elements that ANYBODY considers core?

• For copy cataloging, do we have core?

• Same rules for Acquisitions and Cataloging?

Title proper• A.4.1 Capitalize the first word or the

abbreviation of the first word in a title … Capitalize other words within titles by applying the guidelines at A.10–A.55, as applicable to the language involved.

• LC-PCC PS for 1.7.1– it is permitted to "take what you see" on the

resource.

Policy decision…

• For titles (or other elements) in all caps, should we normalize?

• (OCLC macro ChangeCase makes this easy)

Statement of responsibility

• 2.4.1.4 Transcribe a statement of responsibility as it appears on the source of information

• Optional omission– Abridge a statement of responsibility only if this can be

done without loss of essential information. Do not use a mark of omission (…) to indicate such an omission. Always record the first name appearing in the statement.

– LC-PCC PS “Generally do not abridge a statement of responsibility.”

Statement of responsibility• Record a statement of responsibility naming

more than one person, family, or corporate body as a single statement whether those persons, etc., perform the same function or different functions.

• Optional omission:– If a single statement of responsibility names more

than three persons, families, or corporate bodies performing the same function (or with the same degree of responsibility), omit any but the first of each group of such persons, families, or bodies.

– LC-PCC PS “Generally do not omit names in a statement of responsibility.”

Policy decision…• Omit unessential information (degrees, ranks,

institutional association)?

• Omit names of multiple contributors, like this?

/ $c Kathryn Lybarger [and six others].

Dates

• 2.8 Place of publication, publisher's name, and date of publication are core elements for published resources.

• 2.11 Copyright date is a core element if neither the date of publication nor the date of distribution is identified.

Policy decision…• If the piece has only a copyright date, RDA

allows just including it in brackets in the publication statement

• For original cataloging, do we want to include a 264 _4 in this case?

• For copy cataloging, do we want to add one?

No such thing as “copyright statement”

• DO NOT DO THIS:– 264 _4 ǂa Basel : ǂb Birkhauser ; ǂa Barcelona ; ǂa

New York : ǂb Distribution, ActarBirkhauserD, ǂc ©2012.

• A 264 _4 indicates a “Copyright Notice Date” and should only ever contain a ǂc

Policy decision…• There are about 15 “copyright statements” in

the catalog now.

• Do we want to correct them?

• Do we want to warn copy catalogers to fix them on the way in?

• Do we want to check for them regularly?

Terms? Codes? (Both?)• RDA 6.9.1.3. Record the type of content

contained in the resource using one or more of the terms listed in Table 6.1.

Media Type – core?• Media type is not core in RDA (but it is for LC)

• Carrier type is core, and carriers are grouped by media type

• unmediated carriers– card

– flipchart

– roll

– sheet

– volume

– object

– other

Media type is redundant for codes• unmediated uses code n

• unmediated carriers:– card   no

– flipchart   nn

– roll   na

– sheet   nb

– volume   nc

– object nr

– other   nz

Policy decision…

• For original cataloging, should we use terms, codes, or both?

• For copy cataloging, should we just accept what we get?

Supplementary content• 7.16.1.3 If the resource contains supplementary

content, record the nature of that content (e.g., its type, extent, location within the resource). Provide this information if considered important for identification or selection.

• LC practice: If a publication contains bibliographical citations in any form, generally use:– 504 __ ǂa Includes bibliographical references.

– 504 __ ǂa Includes bibliographical references (pages 310-325).

Policy decision…

• For original cataloging, should we include the note about bibliographical references and/or index?

• For copy cataloging, should we add that note if it is not there?

Subject headings (??)

Policy decision…

• For copy cataloging, make sure that non-fiction includes at least one LC (or MeSH) subject heading?

• For original cataloging, make sure that non-fiction includes at least one LC (or MeSH) subject heading?
