Break down:
part 1: behind the lines
part 2: what can be some actionables
Break Out Session: general about book content
Learnings: Behind the lines
From a perspective of (Eric)
is a researcher and doctor turned intra-preneur and given resources
- he is kinda like super hero status
- a call to action to patients / society
- also autobiographical and venting :)
On Technology
Has a lot of interest and respect for the digital revolution
He is amazed at what it has been able to do
His description may not accurately describe the "build up" before the iPhone
Other interesting observations
Has a reputation for breaking the rules and pissing people off
Has been fired from the hospital he founded for (essentially) innovation
Luckily he has a pair of great backers, so that is able to work free of the system
Mary and Gary West
West Corporation - 911 & telecomunication

Eric's Prescription to Medicine:

Needs to be Schumpeted
By Us Patients
Creative Destruction
Incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one.
Radically Transformed
digital information has revolutionized our world, but not our health until now
So that we refocus on :Preserving Our Health
Digitizing the world,Digitizing the Body
Assembling Relevant Data,Making Actionable
suggestions
We Have the Technical Foundation
Think of the SmartPhone
Medical Smartphone ie Tricorder
with massive number of other sensors
Data:
previous:1 Billion gigabytes by 2003
now:x trillion gigabytes per year35 trillion gigabytes per year
mostly from sensors
Current Status and Health Reform
Reform: mainly operational, not better health
But currently needed because there is no alignment for innovation in health
Overuse and Wrong use, No prevention
Patients are organizing:
- Are able to get data
- Determine Treatment
- can be a problem.
- resisted by the industry
Potential Problems:
Treating the virtual vs. real patient
Loss of interaction and healing touch
Problems with innovative products
Data Deluge
Actionables
Some of the pportunities discussed
Moving away from Population Medicine to person Unique Treatments
Continuous tracking of all body functions and vital signs
Ability to make analysis: Being able to predict heart attacks, cancer ie check engine light
Point of the book:
Make consumers aware of the Creative Destruction about to happen
And prepare to make the right trade offs as Medicine get’s Schumpeted.
A CALL TO ACTION!
Eric is unique
Eric has great funding
Most Doctors do not get this chance
InterWest Institute - Test tube for creative destruction
Question to Audience: How do we find and fund people like Eric, whom are not yet discovered?
