In 1987, The American Society of Mechan-ical Engineers accepted responsibility to collect,collate and publish a listing of world-wide fastenermanufacturer markings. In July 1987 ASME pub-lished a first edition of "A Guide to the Markingsof Fastener Manufacturers" and it plans to up-

Standard high strength boltThis is a hexagon head bolt made toBS.4395 from a medium carbon steel,carefully selected for strength andductility. The bolt is used together witha special nut and hardened washer.The strength of the nuts'were chosento make sure it would develop the fullmechanical properties of the bolt with-out thread stripping and the distortionof the nut. The hardened washer isused under the tightening member toprovide a uniform surface for tighten-ing. GKN high strength bolts can alsobe supplied in higher grade material toBS.4395 : Part 2 *.Countersunk high strength friction gripbolts (head dimensions to BS.4933)can be made specially to order.*The use of higher. grade bolts isrestricted to joints subject only toshear. Where joints made with highergrade bolts carry loads in the directionof the bolt axes, bolts with waistedshanks are recommended.

The GKN foundation bolt gives a rigidand permanent anchorage to walls andfloors, The disposition of the angularfaces on the indented portion of thebolt enables it to withstand high pullout loads when embedded. Standardbolts are made in steel Grade 4-6 butbolts in non -ferrous metals and stainlesssteels can be supplied to special order.For high shear applications, indentedfoundation bolts can be supplied in.high tensile steels. They can also besupplied spun galvanised or with anyother protective finishes. Bolts aresupplied with hexagon nuts to BS.4190Grade 4.

InstallationThe best results are obtained when thebolts are placed in position when theconcrete is laid, When this is not alwayspracticable, for example, when boltsare to be fixed to existing walls orfloors, a hole should be made 6-10 mmlarger than the diameter of the indentedportion of the bolt and not less than10 mm deeper than the portion to be,embedded. The prepared grouting mix-ture should then be poured into thehole and the bolt inserted. The top ofthe bolt should be tapped lightly whilstrotating it to exclude any trapped air.It is important that the grouting com-pound is allowed to set thoroughlybefore the bolt is loaded.

High tensile precision bolts,screws, and nuts - BS.1083 -B.S.F./B.S.W.These were declared non-preferred onthe 1st January, 1974, and wereremoved from the stock range. Theseproducts will only be manufactured ineconomic quantities and will becomedifficult to obtain and certainly moreexpensive.
Cup square bolts Ft nuts- B.S.W.This range has now been phased outand only metric bolts and nuts areavailable from stock.
Indented foundation bolts andnuts- B.S.W.The imperial range has also beenphased out and only metric bolts andnuts are available from stock.
Black hexagon bolts, screws, andnuts- BS.916- B.S.W.These will be declared non-preferredduring 1975. During this interim periodthose companies who have not yetgone metric should begin to plan andintroduce their change over to metric.The cost of not going metric can onlyincrease, as the bolt and nut industryaccelerate their changeover to metricproducts. The above timetable is inaccordance with the policy of theBritish Bolt, Nut, Screw and RivetFederation.
UnitsIt will be noted that strength gradesare specified in metric 'technical' units(kgf/mm'). This is in accordance withpresent continental practice. How-ever, agreement has now been reachedto use S. I units (N/mm z)- (the correctunit in the coherent S.1 system) and itis hoped such units will eventuallysupercede 'technical' units. S.I unitshave therefore been used. (1 kgf =9.81 Newtons).

Variety reductionThere are live Imperial threads inregular use in the U.K. These can bereplaced by a single ISO-METRICcoarse thread, thus replacing 40 sizesby 7 between diamcters M6 and M24.The resultant economies of storagedistribution and Volume productionwill offset the initial expenses ofchanging to the new system. Not onlyshould designers choose the 1-10-Metric coarse thread but they shouldalls'o "think Metric" and c666sep referred lengths and diametersrather than simply convert from pasthriperial size requirements.

Coarse and fine threadsIt is our intention to manufacture forstock, only ISO-Metric coarse threads.This is finer than B.S.W. but not asfine as B.S.F. Its tensile stress area isonly slightly less than that of B.S.F.and in the majority of cases Metriccoarse can be substituted for both.Although there are several validreasons for*specifying a fine threadtheir advantages are outweighed bythose of a coarse one, which isstronger, more robust, provides moreroom for plating, is less affected bycorrosion and high temperature,assembles easier and quicker andeliminates cross threading, Finethreads will therefore only be availableto special order and their usediscouraged if possible.Length of threadThe length of thread for eachdiameter of bolt appears in the chartoverleaf. It will be nct- `_- :ndiameters M1 6-M27 (lengths LID to125 mm) of black bolts to BS.4190the length of thread is reduced to 1 ftimes the fzo!t diameter.
