Patriot’s Day-April 19. Patriots were colonists who wanted independ-ence from British rule. Most hoped to find peaceful ways to settle their differences with England. When the British decided to look for Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were hiding in Concord, Paul Revere and Billy Dawes rode through the night warning other Patriots in New England. The American Revolution began when the first shots were fired at Lexington on April 19, 1775. Each side said the other fired first. Patriots' Day was established to mark the beginning of the Revolution-ary War. Enacted August 30, 2001, from the 2001 Laws of Wisconsin,
Act 16 budget bill.
Prisoner of War Remembrance Day-April 9, commemorates the date during World War II when the largest number of Americans were captured in the Conquest of Bataan. Gubernatorial proclamation shall suitably recognize those who suffered captivity in foreign countries while in active service with the U.S. armed forces and request that some portion of the day be used for solemn contemplation on the plight of those who have been held prisoners of war. Enacted Nov. 29, 2001
from the 2001 Laws of Wisconsin, Act 20 budget bill.

MATH MEET Congratulations to the Math Meet teams for a wonderful
showing as they represented our school at this year's Meet.
Each meet lasted one half-day. Fifth and sixth
grades met in the morning and the seventh and
eighth grades met in the afternoon.
All the students worked to earn team points by problem
solving without calculators, doing consumer math, com-
pleting geometric reasoning questions and doing mental
math. The final event included working together on a
project as a team that was worth an extra 100 points. The
questions were extremely challenging, our students worked
together well and we very proud of everyone.

Arbor Day
Arbor Day is a Wisconsin Public School
observance day which is a day set apart
for planting trees. All states in the United
States celebrate it. National Arbor Day is the last
Friday in April. Many other countries also cele-
brate Arbor Day by planting trees, or they have
other special days or weeks for tree planting.
Arbor Day began in Nebraska. Julius Sterling
Morton, a newspaper publisher, realized that
trees would enrich the soil and conserve moisture
in it. Through his efforts, April 10, 1872, was set
aside as Nebraska's first Arbor Day. The Nebras-
ka Legislature later made Arbor Day a legal holi-
day and changed its date to April 22, Morton’s
birthday. From World Book encyclopedia
April 13 – American’s Creed Day
I believe in the United States of America
as a Government of the people, by the
people, for the people; whose just powers are de-
rived from the consent of the governed; a democra-
cy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sover-
eign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable;
established upon those principles of freedom, equal-
ity, justice, and humanity for which American patri-
ots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.
I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to
love it, to support its Constitution; to obey its laws;
to respect its Flag; and to defend it against all ene-
mies.
American's Creed Day is a Wisconsin Public School
Observance Day recognizing the American's Creed,
written in 1917 by William Tyler Page, a messenger
in the U.S. House of Representatives. His essay was
judged the "best summary of American political
faith" in a national contest.

Tornado Safety Before the Storm: Develop a plan for you and your family for home, work,
school and outdoors. Know the safest shelter areas in multiple locations.
Have frequent drills.
Keep a disaster supply kit in your home including water, food that won’t spoil and needs no heat to serve, first-aid kit, NOAA Weather Radio (also known as an emergency weather radio), a flashlight and special items for children, pets and elderly family members.
Be sure your weather radio is working properly. Spring is
a great time to install fresh batteries.
