Three hours of a sleepless night is
the time he is said to have taken.
Three hours with a pad and pencil in
bed, then Philippe Starck had sket-
ched the object about which, many
years later, people are still heatedly
debating. A, the 119-metre-long
result of that night and realised by
HDW, splits owners, designers,
engineers or pure yacht-lovers, like you perhaps are, into only two
groups: admirers and opponents. There is no in-between. I wan-
ted to stir up the rather conservative scene, Starck once said
about his design. Broadly speaking, the bow, the extremely long
foredeck and the superstructure alone are enough to qualify A
for her title as the most extravagant solitaire in yachting history.
Readers who get more deeply immersed in the article on page 32
will learn that A also does justice to this role with other details.
After all, who has a Jacuzzi in the saloon, a free-standing bathtub
in their suite, 14 hatches in the hull two just to control the an-
chor manoeuvring or a captain who thanks to missing naviga-
tion bridge wings commands the mooring process with the help of
retractable cameras? A is radical, and even her name sounds an-
archistic too. But she still has something romantic about her. A
in fact stands for Aleksandra, the name of the owners wife
Despite all the secretiveness that accompanies the building of
such yachts as A, HDW was, of course, no longer able to hide
this 119-metre-long vessel from the public eye during the delivery
phase. This worked better in the north of Berlin, quasi the second
construction site of A. In weeks of meticulous work, a shipyard
for miniatures completed a model of the yacht just 1.19 metres
long, so on a scale of 1:100. How does that work? See page 94.

The interest in the second Abu Dhabi Yacht Show is intense, and especially now that the new venue of Yas Marina (F1 grand prix back-
drop) has been announced where all exhibitors including those without boats will have a waterside presence. After the premiere event
was quite respectably booked with about 100 exhibitors, including large yachts up to the 90-metre Lauren L from Liveras Yachts, the
organisers are expecting an increase of about 50 percent at
the show from 25th to 27th February. Amongst others, the
shipyards Feadship, Amels, Westport, Fincantieri, Burger,

expected. It is speculated that the latter will berth its 141-

Balcony is the simple name the Italian equipment experts at Besen-
zoni have given their latest innovation for yachts longer than 35 metres.
As the name suggests this innovative system is a balcony that can be
folded out if required and that adds an attractive place to sit to owners
or guest suites directly above the waves. Balcony consists of two
elements that can be operated independent of each other via a touch-
screen in the cabin. Whilst the terrace is extended hydraulically from the
ships side, railing supports fold out automatically from the floor to
make this mini-sunspot feel safe. The Italian company matches the
inner section to the rest of the interior. besenzoni.it

Hall Spars has launched its Seamless
Carbon Rigging (SCR) system on the
market. The US rigging specialists, based in
Bristol (Rhode Island), manufacture their
SCR standing rigging cables from solid
carbon and these have a diameter that
is 15% smaller than PBO or C-6 products
featuring the same maximum load. Ac-
cording to Hall Spars, the decreased diame-
ter of their carbon-fibre rods significantly
reduces rigging wind resistance and thus
improves racing performance. The US firm
recommends end fittings in lightweight
titanium. SCR cables are supplied in white
as standard, but other Awlgrip colours are
available. hallspars.com

behind this Righini identity.
Owners regularly like to up-
grade, sticking to one brand
or one designer. They often
buy the next model up from
the builder that they trust.
Production of the first units
is making rapid progress.
Both the smallest models, the
28-metre Delfino and the 32-
metre Tradition, are due to be
delivered by the summer.
The Delfino, incidentally a
replacement in Benettis port-

sold moderately well, will be

rienced Nice-based Franois

to follow in 2011, the Classic
Supreme 131 in 2012 and
the flagship, the Vision

the transition to the builders

builder specifies the
lines, the exterior styl-
ing and layout of a yacht and
lets the customer choose the
interior and a fraction of
the technical specification.
The owner is thus provided
with a well-engineered plat-
form, gets a good price and
a comparatively short delivery
lead time. A large number
of builders do a lot of good
business, based on this semi-
custom principle; some even
venture as big as 60 metres.
Benetti, with sites in Fano,
Viareggio and Livorno, has
pursued this strategy for
many years, yet it has now
expanded and completely
reconfigured its range once
again. Using the Benetti

engineering and design boundaries. When he then got
hooked on a design by the French designer Philippe Starck,
one decision led to another. Starck, so the legend goes,

sleepless night. The industrial designer, furniture stylist and
hotel interiors guru is not regarded by many as a qualified
yacht designer, despite his work on the Feadship W

thinker. Starck sees himself as a director, w

with the fact that Starcks design has reduced the size of
the interior to that of a 90-metre, as w

that the wind w

was an absolute no-no.
What emerged was a semi-
displacement vessel accom-
modating up to eight passen-
gers, which can cope with
passages of up to 1,000 miles
non-stop at an impressive 12
knots and can sprint twice as
quickly past depressions. The
bow cuts gently through
the waves and a certain level
of draught and the right keel
have an impact when the
hull is in displacement travel
mode, Dixon explained.
Azimut set us specific
parameters as regards target
group and accommodation,
Freivokh added, and gave us
free rein to come up with
completely new styling.
And how does Azimut re-
gard this new market and by
extension these new owners?
The key term is called Slow
Motion. Owners should be
able to reach their destina-
tions quickly and then appre-
ciate them at a slower pace.
The prototype was show-
cased at the Genoa Boat
Show in October and is set to
embark on a 4000-nautical-
mile roadshow for demon-
strations and serious testing.
To glaciers and the Galapagos Ken Freivokh and Bill Dixon designed the Azimut Magellano range for laid-back owners.

there is more to this
than meets the eye.
The firm belief that growing
markets are made up of niches
gave birth to the Azimut Ma-
gellano concept. This name,
with which Azimut aims to
create a new class of yacht,
already indicates in which di-
rection the concept is headed.
Ferdinand Magellan was one
of the great explorers and the
first captain to set off on a cir-
cumnavigation of the globe.
So the Magellano is intend-
ed to be a cruiser, but one
that has not existed hitherto.
By commissioning Ken Frei-
vokh to handle styling and the
interior and Bill Dixon to de-
sign the hull below the water-
line, the Italian company en-
gaged two designers, who
have already made a profound
impression on the yacht indus-
try. Reverting to familiar con-
cepts was not an option. The
Magellano is not intended to

the Explorer box of tricks was
not allowed. Explorers are
pure displacement vessels
with robust exterior styling. In
fact what was called for was a
design that is indeed able to
manoeuvre in heavy seas and
sit out storms, yet is also able
to outrun bad weather quick-
ly and above all is easy on the
eye. A trawler style, which is

A model for every ten feet,
Marketing Director Enrico
would expect, are of course
also manufactured from these
lightweight fibres. This econ-
omy drive also impacts on the

uses PBO fibre cables.
The latest addition to the
Finnish builders fleet also
puts in a performance to
match. The close-hauled sail
area of 220 square metres
provides great performance,
particularly in light breezes.
The 3.60-metre-draught bulb
keel weighs in at just 7.7
tonnes and provides a great
deal of righting momentum.
The 3-metre-draught car-
bon rudder blade responds
promptly and directly to the
helm. Thanks to the on-board
hydraulics the sloop can also
be easily sailed by two people.
The mainsheet that elegantly
vanishes out of sight in the aft
deck incorporates three Mag-
ic Trim cylinders; genoa and
asymmetric spinnaker sheets
are operated using Harken
winches. The clean interior,
which is dominated by oiled
teak, grey upholstery and
white ceilings, matches the
white-caulked teak deck per-
fectly. Nautors next product
will be the Swan 80.

pure hydrogen, in order in
turn to generate electricity
from the fuel cells. Even the
by-products from the hydro-

water, carbon dioxide and
heat are recycled and contrib-
ute to a further reduction in
emissions. Thus algae bind
the CO2 in a bio-reactor, a
steam engine collects the
surplus heat and this gener-

The electricity generated
using fuel cells, extensive
solar panels and the steam
engine not only powers all
three decks but also feeds the
propulsion pods, which in
combination with convention-
al drive shafts give Aeon a
top speed of 18 knots. If the
captain also uses power from
the massive lithium-ion bat-
tery banks, this new concept
yacht is predicted to reach a
maximum speed of 25 knots.
As is customary these days
on new Feadship projects, the
interior is also full of surprises.
A glass atrium that extends
through all decks dominates
the yacht and could function
in equal measure as a research
laboratory and zen-like re-
laxation area for owners and

A VERY ALTERNATIVEDESIGN CONCEPTReality was never his scene, said the designer Philippe Starck, describing
himself. When you look at the profile of 119-metre A, you can quite
believe him. His colleague Martin Francis, known for Eco, brought a
sense of nautical reality into the equation. HDW built this eyecatcher.

The alternative hull, the alternative superstructure, the alternative
yacht: the way waves are generated already tell you that A needs
to be judged by other standards. The yachting world agrees that she
is the most unusual yacht ever to have been launched. The builder
mastered this risky challenge during a four-year construction period.

The alternative foredeck: instead of placing it behind a protective
superstructure, Starck positioned the alfresco furniture on the
foredeck beneath a canopy that looks like a visor. There is space
for a number of seating arrangements, oversized sofas and a
dining table beneath this substantial source of shade. The pool is
a contrasting rectangle with glass panelling for a view astern. The
saloon can be opened on both sides (left) and provides a passage
to the aft section where loungers, extensive seating and a Jacuzzi
are placed beneath a less prominent sun shade (below right).

The alternative interior: the owners bed is positioned with
a Mies van der Rohe Barcelona chair on a rotating pedestal.
The washbasin is close by in the middle of the room set in an
acrylic table, whilst the polished stainless steel Jacuzzi can be
seen by the window. Starck was liberal in his use of baroque-
style accessories, such as the massive standard lamp. Guests
are accommodated in reflective surroundings. The designer
even positioned a Jacuzzi in the saloon. Starck refreshingly
defies conventions and there is little nautical style evident.

materials used in the yachts

proud basins in Baccarat

The alternative profile: Starck did not attach great importance
to a generous amount of space. The superstructure looks like
the glass conning tower on a submarine. The builder installed
the owners suite, the bridge and the saloon on its decks. The
oval windows in the hull provide guests with light. One can see
hatches aft of the helipad which are in fact pop-up wave-breakers.
Imtech supplied the integrated bridge and Steen the anchor gear.

was risky but you do not turn
down a commission such as
this, even if it is designed by
someone who is not exactly
regarded as a yacht designer.
However Starck has not only
gained experience with lemon
squeezers, but also on boats,
marinas and buildings and
interiors ashore. When talking
about a hotel he designed, he
stated he wanted to wake
people out of the soporific
state into which a society
that produces nothing but
onlookers has cast them.
Now you may well argue
that people check into a hotel
in order to be able to get a
peaceful nights sleep rather
than be woken up. Starck
takes a different view. He is
designer to the event society.
My interiors are creative
mechanisms and for these
purposes I will employ any
and every means, he once
lectured a German newspaper
team. He regards himself as a
director, who wants to tell a
story and amaze people.
The Frenchman generates
this amazement using, in his
own words, revolutionary
means. Dcor is of secondary
importance, he says. Critics
maintain that Starcks work is
all about dcor. Disagree-
ments of this kind are unlikely
to concern As bold owner
and his guests very much.
In any event Starck has
managed to design and fit out
a yacht that appears surreal

thing like it before. And
a design such as this
one is unlikely to emerge for
some time. The ram bow is
certainly en vogue at the
moment, and Feadships
Predator also features this
profile. But no previous
design can match As radi-
calness. The owner Andrey
Melnichenko apparently had
not originally intended to
revolutionise the yachting
world. He got several design-
ers to submit proposals and
then got hooked on a design
by Philippe Starck, who came
up with the idea for As
design during a long sleepless
night, so the story goes.
That was well over five
years ago, as HDW at that
time the Kiel-based division of
ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems
itself spent four years on
this project. The challenge

ed Francis as naval architect-
designer together with the
effervescent Starck. Francis
also submitted a complete
design to the owner, yet this
did not manage to cross the
finishing line. However the
owner did take a liking to my
work, Francis explained.
And so A was given a
bulbous bow, which Starck
had not envisaged. The un-
derwater protrusion turned
out to be necessary, since it
generates buoyancy in the
narrow stem section and also
reduces wave resistance.
Buoyancy was a key issue. The
builders in-house team had to
calculate where the centre of
gravity was and then judi-
ciously position the fixtures.
In order to be sure of fin-
ding a radical yet at the same
time seaworthy hull design
from the outset, Francis
design team commissioned
test tank experiments. What
astounded us was that the
hull design with its very long
stem generated fewer waves,
the faster the model ploughed
through the water. We were
all hooked. Form follows
function. The similarity of the
radical hull to those on the
new Zumwalt class of US
Navy destroyers is no coinci-
dence and has paid dividends.
In order to ensure that the hull
does not nosedive in heavy
stern seas or go off course,
Francis put an engine on the
test tank model and put it out

ence list. The 65-metre Fead-
ship Wedge too was deliv-
ered to her owner in 2002.
Back then Starck had speci-
fied a large chandelier in the
wheelhouse and wood-pan-
elled the exterior of the super-
structure. That would never
occur to Martin Francis.
For all the outlandishness of
his ideas, rationality plays a
major role in the Brits work,
and that is the reason why the
owner paired the level-head-
ciple of reality to the project,
although he is not exactly one
of the industrys conservatives
either. His 75-metre Eco,
nowadays called Enigma,
broke the mould in 1991 and
her impact has hardly been
matched to this day. Francis
however does not think about
telling stories and amazing
people, but about form
and function in a conven-
tional sense. A is not the
first yacht on Starcks refer-
enough to fit his maxims.
Reality was never my scene,
he told the newspaper in
no uncertain terms. I have
worked hard throughout my
life to avoid coming into con-
tact with it. Inspiring stuff.
And you can take him en-
tirely at his word when you
see A. In this case naval ar-
chitects had to get used to a
whole new way of thinking.
Martin Francis, trained in fur-
niture design, added the prin-

onto the Solent using remote
control, in order to expose it
to the waves generated by
ferries. Even in waves that in
scale terms would have been
ten metres high, our model
travelled safely in the dry.
To shield the forward part
of the main deck and the
large amount of glass on
the superstructure, Lloyds re-
quired that a retractable wave-
breaker a structural highlight
be installed on the foredeck.
As far as I know the splash-
guard has not yet been used,
Francis recounted.
It took a full year to develop
the hull concept in detail. The
search for an appropriate
builder ended in Kiel at HDW.
Once he had handed over
lines drawings and GA-plans
to the shipbuilder, the perfec-
tionist yacht architects job
had been completed. Now
Dirk Kloostermann, acting as
the owners representative in
dealings with the builder,
which at this time was inte-
grated into ThyssenKrupp
Marine Systems, got involved.
Kloostermann recalls: Co-
ordinating the work of a wide
range of different staff and
suppliers was not always easy.
However the result is, to my
mind, just breathtaking.
The Dutchman supervised the
innovative project for three-
and-a-half years and occasion-
ally had to come up with
some creative solutions hims-
elf. The lack of space inside

the tumblehome hull required inven-
tiveness. And where did other prob-
lems crop up? Just smoothing the mas-
sive surfaces was difficult enough. The
hatches in front of the tender garage are
each 14 metres long and 4.5 metres
high. Nothing can be allowed to warp. It
was the seven hatchways on each side
that necessitated having to take strength
into account. The hatches in the anchor
room that enable people to observe the
yacht as she manoeuvres also caused
headaches. Cranes, anchors, antennas,
tenders and toys are absolutely forbid-
den to detract from the overall shape in
any way. Everything is cleverly con-
cealed. The hydraulic system plays a cru-
cial role with this wealth of applications.
A, did the media rounds for a long
time, known as the SF99 (Starck/
Francis, 99 metres) project and then as
Sigma. She has been designed to
cruise distances of up to 6,000 nautical
miles nonstop. However the revolution-
ary Starckisms did not end with delivery
of the yacht. Even the captain had to
rethink, for A has no bridge sponsons.
Extendable video cameras provide orien-
tation and docking requires experience.
The owner, his guests and crew will be
able to live with the fact that Starcks
design of these 119 metres has reduced
the interior to a perceived 90 metres
in length, as well as with the fact that
the wind will blow on the foredeck
when A is at anchor. A has recently
won the top category of the Interna-
tional Superyacht Society Award in Fort
Lauderdale, for sailing aboard a unique
specimen such as this is surely one of the
yachting worlds most unbeatable ex-
periences. A, named after the owners
wife, Aleksandra, has undoubtedly al-
ready acquired historical significance.

estimation, the ideal look for

deep drafts of those launches

are familiar with King, you
may wonder what a sailboat
designer could bring to the
project. There are actually two
elements in common: Fantail
cruisers had schooner-like
bows and hulls that tapered
down to their keels. Also of
importance: Catena wanted a
minimal wake with efficient
performance and fuel con-
sumption. Kings contributions
to the ketch Scheherazade
and the classic-looking, cutter-
rigged sloop Maria Cattiva
filled the bill on all counts.
Tank tests further proved
King to be a good choice, as did
sea trials. Sycara IV cruised
at 12 knots with a wake of less
than 0.03 metres, exactly as
Catena specified, according to
Steve Narcawicz, his long-time
project manager. Narcawicz
also relates that, even with the
gensets on, the yacht aver-
aged close to the fuel con-
sumption Catena specified at
that speed, 102 litres per hour.
Of course, Kings design
could not have undergone
sea trials without a shipyard.
I wanted to build in America
if I could, Catena says, grant-
ing Burger the contract based
largely on its long history
of custom construction. The
doors to Burgers first sheds
were opened in 1863, making
it the oldest U.S.-based super-
yacht yard and second oldest
among American recreational
boat builders (top honor goes
to Hogdon Yachts, founded
1816). Narcawicz points out
another factor that weighed
into Catenas decision, that
being the skill of Burgers
wood shop. It has a high
level of cabinetry work, so it
was a natural fit, he explains.
Ken Freivokh, Sycara IVs in-
terior designer, agrees, saying
he was impressed by the
teamwork and how the tech-
nical department exchanged
correspondence. They were
very anxious to interpret the
requirement fully and with a

a nice contrast against white-

THE BEST OF TWO WORLDSJoubert Nivelt Goeffers and JFA shipyard have picked up on a new trend. With an interior
by Rhoades Young, Hortense can be considered to be either an exploration motor
yacht with good sailing capabilities or a ketch with a long range motor yacht autonomy.

achts are born out
of dreams, encounters,
friendships, long dis-
cussions, compromises, and
always passion. Hortense is
no different. The naval archi-
tect Michel Joubert carries
pictures of his own yacht
Marguerite a 16-metre
Y aluminium ketch in the icesaround the North Pole, wher-ever he goes. He is so passion-ate about sailing in remote
places that he shows them to
everybody at every opportuni-
ty. Guess what happens when
he meets Hortenses own-
er? The latter falls in love with
the Marguerite photos in
the ice and tells Joubert this
is where I want to sail!.

Hortense, with her impos-

looks like an exploration ves-
sel of the 50s but with a mod-
ern sailing rig added and a
yacht quality finish. Looking
up, you can easily notice the
ketch is meant to sail. The two
carbon masts, made by Lori-
ma, with their beautiful Park
Avenue booms stand proud. I

delivery. The bow thruster
gently pushes us off the dock
and we motor pass the Old
City of Concarneau toward
the Glenans, one of the most
beautiful areas in Britanny.
The view from the high fly-
bridge is quite impressive with
only small blind spots for-
ward. The flybridge hosts a
pilot station with a comfort-
able seat, hydraulic sail trim
controls, two tenders and the
mizzen mast. The mainsail
sheet is located inside the
boom while the staysail is self
tacking and the genoa sheets
run neatly along the guard-
rails to the aft cockpit, where
the mizzen is trimmed on
dedicated winches.
While we are motoring out I
go down below. The silence is
noticeable; acoustic insulation
was a priority and the Dutch
company Van Cappellen Con-
sultancy were employed by
JFA to optimize it. I can barely

hear the hum of the twin 285
hp Cummins diesels running.
The pilot house, upper and
lower saloons share one large
and uncluttered space, almost
the full beam of Hortense.
Hortense is designed to be
sailed mainly from inside the
pilot house. The pilot house is
divided in two sections, both
with very comfortable light
brown, thick leather sofas.
The radar and a MaxSea soft-
ware dedicated computer
screens are located to port
and the helm, engine con-
trols, electric switches, alarm
systems, as well as the sail
trimming push buttons are
to hand to starboard. The sa-
loon/lounge, separated from
the pilot house by a small
change in level, was designed
by Dick Young to be the focal
point of life aboard. Floor-to-
ceiling windows give open
views of the sea even while
relaxing in the comfortable
sofas. Three steps down, the
lower saloon is an inviting

the transom. We are sailing at
4.8 knots in 12.5 knots of
wind at a 44-degree true wind
angle, without any help from
the engines, which is not bad
for a 130-tonne yacht. Later
on, with the 380-square-me-
tre red spinnaker, we will
reach 6.5 knots with 12 knots
of wind at 112-degree true
wind angle. Hortenses cruis-
ing speed motoring is 11
knots. Joubert Nivelt Design
has balanced the sails and hull
nicely with the three-metre-
long, 20-tonne ballast keel.
So for the most skeptical
(I was amongst them) the
answer is yes, Hortense can
sail. On long runs, to reduce
heeling, it is possible to trans-
fer 3,000 litres of fuel to ei-
ther the port or starboard day
tanks. The shipyard has done
fuel consumption tests both
with and without sails. With
both engines running at 1,500
rpm, at a speed of 10 knots
fuel consumption reaches 35
litres an hour while, with the
sails set in ideal sea and wind
conditions, at the same speed
at 1,000 rpm the consumption
can be reduced by 30 %.
I want to get a feel for the
owners suite while sailing. To
access it you have to pass
through the lower saloon and
descend a staircase to the
heart of Hortense, next to
the crew quarters and the
galley. What may seem to be
a strange location at first
