ANCIENT EGYPT IN 3D
KARNAK - AMON-RA TEMPLE
Presented by Alessandro Furlan, this innovative multimedia presentation
will guide you through the magnificent sites of Karnak and Luxor.
Ancient Egypt in 3D is a virtual exploration of the architectural wonders
built by the pharaohs, and of other monuments in the Nile Valley. From
the terraced Pyramid of Djoser to the Alexandria Lighthouse of the
Ptolemaic age, the program reconstructs, in 3D and in all their
polychromy, buildings that are nowadays highly ruined, or have totally
disappeared after Napoleons Campaign to Egypt at the end of the XVIII
century.

Fallout from the killing of Osama bin Laden in a Pakistani garrison town has prompted an anxious reassessment of all facets of the complex, troubled alliance between the United States and Pakistan. A new report from CGDs StudyGroup on U.S. Development Strategy in Pakistan shines light on a crucial and too-often neglected aspect of therelationship: the aid, trade and investment policies that constitute Americas effort to support Pakistansdevelopment.

Reforming Institutions and Managing Extremes:U.S. Policy Options for Adapting to Climate Change
An RFF First Wednesday Seminar
June 1, 2011
12:45-2:00 p.m.
The nations landscapes and cities will experience both negative and positive impacts from a changing climate. The challenge for effective climate adaptation is to form federal policies that are flexible enough to addressdiverse impacts in distinct regions of the country. A single, overarching government policy cannot contend with
every need or problem; at the same time, the federal government still has a significant and critical role to play.RFF researchers recently completed a major study investigating potential policy options for the federalgovernments response to climate adaptation, the results of which will be presented at the June FirstWednesday Seminar. Speakers will lay out the key findings important for domestic adaptation policydevelopment, then showcase three salient areas of concern that highlight the complexity and magnitude of thechallenges the nation faces in adjusting to shifting climatic conditions.

Accenture Development Partnerships and Accenture Sustainability Services
Convergence Economy: Rethinking International Development in a Converging World
Wednesday, June 1, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
The Hilton Washington Embassy Row
2015 Massachusetts Avenue NW
RSVP: devpartnershipsinfo@accenture.com
Accenture Development Partnerships and Accenture Sustainability Services would like to invite you to aninteractive panel discussion to celebrate the launch of their new and innovative report entitled,"Convergence Economy: Rethinking International Development in a Converging World ."
The report proposes that some of the world's most intractable problems, including childhood malnutrition, climate change, and the lack of access to clean water, cannot be solved solely by the traditional aid-basedapproach. Instead, overcoming these challenges requires a greater degree of convergence amongbusinesses, NGOs, and governments to align the power of market forces with development outcomes thatcreate mutual and sustainable value for all constituents.
In essence, these groups must replace short-term, event-driven cooperation with an on-going, sharedcommitment to mutual benefit and the creation of "systems solutions." Put simply, Accenture is seeinga cross-sector convergence of solutions to development problems--an approach that puts the needs of those most affected squarely at the heart of the matter.
Panelists:
Gib Bulloch, Executive Director, Accenture Development Partnerships
Elizabeth Gore, Executive Director, Global Partnerships, United Nations Foundation
Carolyn Miles, Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, Save the Children
Perry Yeoman , Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, President, Kraft Foods Foundation
Accenture Development Partnerships is a group within Accenture designed to operate on a not for profitbasis to channel Accenture's strategic business, technology and project management expertise to non-profit organizations, NGOs, foundation and donor organizations operating in the development sector-helping these organizations achieve their social and economic development goals. ADP started as acorporate social enterprise in 2003 and to date has completed over 400 projects for 74 non-profit clients, working across 58 developing countries, and deploying more than 1,000 Accenture employees.

The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of DistractionA Lunch Discussion with Alan JacobsFriday, June 3, 12:30-1:30 p.m.Hudson Institute1015 15th Street NW Sixth FloorWashington, DC 20005This event is free and open to the public, and will include lunch. Doors will open at 12:15 p.m. Registration isrequired. RSVP: aschulman@thenewatlantis.com .
In recent years, cultural commentators have sounded the alarm about the direstate of reading in America. Americans are not reading enough, they say, or
reading the right books, in the right way.
In this lunchtime lecture, New Atlantis contributing editor Alan Jacobs will discusshis new book The Pleasures of Reading in an Age of Distraction . Jacobs arguesthat, contrary to the doomsayers, reading is alive and well in America. Hisinteractions with his students and the readers of his own books, however, suggestthat many readers lack confidence; they wonder whether they are reading well, with proper focus and attentiveness, with due discretion and discernment. Manyhave absorbed the puritanical message that reading is, first and foremost, good foryou the intellectual equivalent of eating your Brussels sprouts.
For such people, indeed for all readers, Jacobs offers some simple, powerful, and
much needed advice: read at whim, read what gives you delight, and do so withoutshame, whether it be Stephen King or the King James Version of the Bible. Jacobsoffers an insightful, accessible, and playfully irreverent guide for aspiring readers. Each chapter focuses on one aspect of approaching literary fiction, poetry, ornonfiction, and the book explores everything from the invention of silent reading,

From multiple directions, senior researchers from the Urban Institutes Health Policy Center diagnose thestate of childrens health coverage and preview what lies ahead for the youngest generation:
How well did Medicaid and the Children s Health Insurance Program meet childrens coverage needsduring the recent recession
What might happen to childrens coverage under the Affordable Care Act? Under a Medicaid blockgrant or legislation allowing states to reduce Medicaid and CHIP eligibility?
Why do coverage programs for kids fall short of their enrollment goals? How can federal and statepolicymakers boost signup and retention?
Despite new opportunities under ACA to obtain insurance, many families will face daunting hurdlesbecause of complex household circumstances -- such as variation within families over who iseligible for public programs -- and other factors. Are there ways to lower these barriers?
Do quality health care services begin at home -- a medical home or accountable care organization, that is?

In the new edition of their study "Freedom in the 50 States: An Index of Personal and Economic Freedom,"published by the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, political scientists Jason Sorens and WilliamRuger comprehensively rank the American states on their public policies that affect individual freedoms in theeconomic, social, and personal spheres. Two intriguing findings of the statistical analysis are that Americans arevoting with their feet and moving to states with more economic and personal freedom and that economicfreedom correlates with economic growth.
