Blood-Vessel-System of theLiverThe liver (Hepar) is the biggest gland ofthe body. It is lying near the diaphragm(Diaphragma) and above the stomach(Ventriculus gaster). The biggest part of itis lying in the right side of the bodywhile the left lobe of the liver is stretch-ing repeatedly to the left side. Its lowestground is divided by two .parallelyrunning fissures (5 and 6) as well as onetransversal fissure, the portal fissure(Porta kepatis, 7) into different singlelobes (1, 2, 3 and 4). The gall bladder(Vesicafettea, 9) is lying in the right fossafor the gall bladder (Fossa vesicae felleae,5); the rest of the embryonic umbilicalvein turns out in the left liver fissure (Fis-sura ligamentum teretis, 6) as a round liga-ment of the liver (Ligamentum feres hepatis,S) which is ending in the back of the por-

tal vein (Vena portae, 14). The liverdiffers from all other organs by beingsupplied with two different sorts ofblood: arterial blood through the hepat-ic artery (Arteria hepatica communis) andvenous blood through the portal vein(Vena portae, 14). Two different subs-tances are taken away: biliary fluidthrough the hepatic duct (Ductus be-paticus communis, II), venous bloodthrough the hepatic veins (Venae hepati-cae, 15). The portal vein (Venaportae, 14)collects its venous blood from the diges-tive organs and branches out in the liverup to the finest capillary vessels. It ishere where the biliary fluid separatesfrom the blood and is brought to theequally fine hepatic ducts (Ductulibiliferi)which join to the main hepatic duct(Ductus hepaticus communis, 11). The lastmentioned together with the cystic duct(Ductus cysticus, 10) are passing on as bileduct (Ductus choledocbus, 12) whose bili-ary fluid is led to the duodenum.
