NEW PEOPLE
Welcome two new PhD students in Silva Uusi-Heikkilä’s new research group!
Stephan van Dijk introduces himself: “I'm a marine biologist from the Netherlands. I'll
be working as part of The Zebrafish Group in order to study the effects that repeated
exploitation and restoration have on the genetic diversity and adaptive potential of fish
populations. My main areas of interest are evolution, adaptation and marine life,
especially cephalopods. My hobbies include diving, snorkeling, skiing and reading.”
Danny Sadler from Liverpool, UK, introduces himself: “I am currently studying a PhD
with The Zebrafish Group. My interests are in evolutionary biology, marine ecology and
all things fish. Outside of academia, I also have an interest in scuba diving.”
Jonne Hytönen is the new Wisdom coordinator. Wisdom is an open, multidisciplinary
research community bringing together scientists whose research interests cover
sustainability, resource wisdom and other such environmental themes. In addition to
running through practical things of Wisdom, Jonne’s task is to enhance societal impact
and science-based decision-making through Wisdom’s societal network. His background
is in environmental social sciences and in human geography.
Anna-Mari Laulumaa works as Artistic Director in "Holy place?" -project. As an artist,
she has been for example studying butoh in New York and acting in female prisons in 9
countries. She has directed plays and developed several site-specific performances in
Finland and Estonia. As a consultant, Anna-Mari has been developing the
communications skills in workplaces mostly in Finland but also in UAE. In her consulting
and coaching work she has utilized drama as a method for learning skills and
understanding the systems and dynamics in a workplace and society.
Riikka Niemelä is a postdoctoral researcher in the "Holy place?" project, starting from
March 1st onwards. Her areas of expertise include history of contemporary art,
phenomenology, performance art and artistic experimentation. She defended her PhD in
Art History at the University of Turku in 2019. She has worked as a teacher at the
University of the Arts in Helsinki, University of Turku and Turku Arts Academy.

NEW PROJECTS
“A holy place? Discourses and place embeddedness of Finnish human-
nature relationship”
This is one year long art&science project funded by Kone Foundation and led by Kaisa
Raatikainen. The project studies the diversity of discourses tied to Finnish human-
nature relationship. Discourses reflect the values and norms of the society, and embody
our understanding of and relationship to what we understand as "nature". The discourses
are studied using methodologies from natural and the social sciences, humanities, and
performative art. A public web survey is utilized to collect quantitative data on agreement
with statements regarding nature, ecosystems, and land uses. By using a case study
approach, more insight is gained on the definitions and practices of Finnish nature
relationship, using qualitative research methods and expressions of flamenco and butoh
dance. As one part of the project, a site-specific performance is created to express the
multiple and complex forms and dimensions of nature relationship. The performance
takes place on the project's study site, as part of Jyväskylän Kesä city festival in early July
2020. Participation in the performance challenges the dancers and the audience to reflect
on their own relationship to nature.

SMALL CONFERENCE NEWS BY HANNU YLÖNEN
Predator-Prey Interactions, Gordon Research Conference
Being a young and ambitious researcher you go to big conferences, to be seen among big stars. As you mature, like
me, at least I like to go to smaller, more specifically focused conferences, not only to be seen but to be heard. One of
the specific meetings is Predator-Prey Interactions, where we went with my junior colleagues Marko Haapakoski
and Thorbjörn Sievert 26.-31.1.2020 in Ventura California, US – Marko and me for the 3rd time, Thorbjörn the
2nd. Gordon Research Conferences are a curious series of high-standard scientific conferences in science, with
almost ascetic daily schedule of lectures at 8:30–13:00 and 19:30–22:00. But as you learn to use the free afternoons
for discussions, planning and networking, you recognize the value of the meeting. The next bi-annual Predator-prey
conference is in Italy, Tuscany 2022. Already this summer there is an excellent GRC on Winter Biology which was
recognized in the cover of Science magazine 21.2.2020. However, one cannot afford two GRCs in one year. And,
midsummer is sailing season.
MICROBIAL LIFE IN BOREAL AND ARCTIC WINTER
In connection to 13th Winter School of Ecology, a workshop “The Forgotten Season - Microbial Life in Boreal and
Arctic Winter” was organized at Konnevesi Research Station 19.-21.2.2020. 35 participants from 20 research
institutions and 8 different countries spend three inspiring and intensive days at the station discussing different
aspects of winter microbiology. We were happy to see so much enthusiasm in this first ever-workshop on this topic.
The workshop was organized by Riitta Nissinen and Heli Juottonen.
WINNERS OF THE DARWIN CAKE COMPETITION
Congratulations to the delicious and beautiful winners of Darwin Cake Competition held in Tuma on 12.2.2020!
There were 101 votes given and the competition was incredibly even! The two winning cakes both got 15.8 % of the
votes: #2 the Carrot cake evolution (actually 6 cakes) and #6 the Corona virus cake. Third place went to #7 Bumble
bee cake which got 12.9% of the votes. Many thanks to all participants!
