Biomass for heat in Austria

Backbone of energy transition

Part of sustainable

forestry and

industry

Huge benefits and low

emissions

• 2.8 bn € turnover • 22 000 full time working places • -13 million t THG reduction • 20% of primary energy • >4 000 companies • >140 000 forest owners • 1.5 million wood heaters • 940 000 district heating users

Research and teaching

Components, planning

• Share of renewables: 33% • Share of bioenergy on renewables: 55% • Share of bioenergy: 20 %

• 100% renewable heating is possible • In an efficient and renewable system

the energy demand is halfed. • 50% of the buildings can be heated with

bioenergy • This means 4 times higher installation

rates • Less (!) biomass input

More installations = Higher share of bioenergy

heated houses = less Biomass

Renewables are the cheapest solution

• Old, not renovated Buildings use most of the Energy

• For nearly every building exists a competitive renewable heating System

• The cost risk of fossil fuels is higher

Wood stock (and growth)

Source: BFW, Holzflussdiagramm, Holzvorrat und Zuwachs in Österreichs Wald

Annual growth 30 million m3

Utilized: 23 million m3 Left in forests

Stock increase

Wood stock 1960: 750 million solid m3

Wood stock increase from 1960 till today: 350 million solid m3

80% of used freshwood is processed by the Industry, only 20% is used for direct energy production. The income for forestry out of selling biomass for energy varies between 3 and 10%. 1m3 solid wood product leads to 6m3 by products > Build with wood!!!!

Building with solid wood = more Biomass for products
