16. Technical Proficiency/Biographical Detail:
Dr. Himender Bharti has been delving on ‘Systematics of Indian Ants’ for the last sixteen
years. His efforts have culminated in building up database and reference collection of Indian
ants. His passion for the natural history of high altitude ants has led to the discovery of many
new species of which ninety per cent are endemic to the region. He has reported a red list ant
species, which also happens to be a social parasite with highest degree of inquinilism. This
rare discovery points towards sympatric mode of speciation in old lineages confined to
Himalaya. Apart from Himalayan ants, he also focusses on ant diversity of the species rich
region of Western Ghats. He is using ants as indicators of ecosystem health to assess the
damage being caused by anthropogenic activities. Dr. Bharti in collaboration with other
myrmecologists of the world is mapping the zoogeographical patterns of Indian ants. He is
actively involved in red listing and conservation of ants in South-east Asia. Currently, he is
deciphering the intricacies of evolution/speciation patterns in high altitude ant genus
Myrmica with the help of molecular tools and plans to extend this molecular approach to
other ant genera as well.
