CLEAR STRUCTURE AND DESIGN
A clear, modern design with a careful balance of text and image aids motivation and simplifies the process of acquiring often complex knowledge. A simple, practical unit structure helps planning.
THE SCIENTIfIC METHoD
The scientific method is an essential part of the learning process in Natural and Social Science. ByME introduces the concept carefully, adding increasing levels of complexity through the course.
LINkS BETWEEN SUBjECT AREAS
ByME Natural and Social Science have strong visual and structural links between them in order to encourage an integrated approach to the two subjects.
MUCH MoRE THAN LANGUAGE AND CoNTENT
Our books offer more than just language and content and help
students develop their own
learning skills and prepare
them for life with sections offering cooperative learning projects, the preparation and giving of presentations, an introduction to study skills, as well as pages dedicated to contextualised values and ethics, and external exam practice.
Modular version of all
units from levels 1-6 also
available
Our books are written specifically for schools
in bilingual and trilingual
programmes teaching the
full Primary Natural
and Social Science
curricula in English, offering them a careful balance between language and content.
GRADED PRoGRESSIoN
ByME Natural and Social Science offer a carefully graded progression ensuring that the level of challenge grows with the students.
Early levels include songs, chants, stories and characters aiding motivation, while ensuring that language support is always provided.
In later levels the focus shifts to content, ensuring coverage of the full curriculum with no reduction in content.

■■ LEvELs 3 & 4 The content opens up to visually attractive double
page spreads with a mixture of scientific and more cartoon-style illustration. Activity types are graded from simple reading comprehension questions to more challenging higher order thinking skills.
■■ LEvELs 5 & 6 In higher levels the characters disappear and the focus
is on the content with photography predominating and the illustration takes on a more scientific and adult tone.
Throughout levels 3 to 6 extra boxes aid motivation in different ways:
Did you know? Bite-size chunks of extra-curricular information. These either add depth to the content presented on the page or simply provide students with fun facts to broaden their knowledge and dazzle their parents!
Link it up. Prompts to help students think laterally and make connections between the content blocks.
In other words. Different ways of expressing information or fun and surprising ways of defining key concepts.
■■ LEvELs 1 & 2 Content is presented on accessible single-lesson pages mixing
age-appropriate illustration, photographs and extensive audio activities. The course characters appear throughout to help bring the content to life.

■■ LEvELs 3 & 4 find out. In these years the level
of challenge is increased with students running through three stages, Idea, Test and Conclusions. The challenge of the experiments also increases to reflect the more complex nature of the contents.
■■ LEvELs 5 & 6 Science project. In higher levels,
the introduction to the scientifc method is complete, running through Aim, Hypothesis, Method, Test and Conclusions.
Each unit includes an experiment to extend or revise the content
while giving the students a thorough introduction to the scientific
method and independent project work. These experiments and
projects are designed to be carried out using readily available
materials and are achievable in a classroom environment.
■■ LEvELs 1 & 2 Let’s investigate. In early levels the process is
highly simplified, running through the stages Idea and Test with Conclusions represented with tick boxes. Studio photos of real children carrying out the experiments aid motivation.

■■ LEvELs 3 & 4 Think about it. Students are encouraged
to think more broadly and apply what they know in the context of simple case studies. They are also introduced to new skills designed to help them to develop their autonomous learning.
■■ LEvELs 5 & 6 fragile world. In the highest levels students
are introduced to the biggest picture of all. The important issues and moral dilemmas faced by the world, stressing the importance of tolerance and understanding of others as well as the rights and obligations we have to the world around us.
At the end of each unit students are introduced to values
and ethics within the context of the content they are studying.
These optional pages are designed to reinforce or extend
the content of the unit.
■■ LEvELs 1 & 2 Make a difference. Students are encouraged to
become aware of their surroundings and how their behaviour can affect other people and the world around them. They are shown that even the smallest actions can truly make a difference.

From Level 3 the revision activities practice both speaking and listening skills at the same time

At the end of every unit there is a double page of revision activities in which
the progression of ByME Natural Science and ByME Social Science can be checked.
■■ LEvELs 3 & 4
Look back. Here the review section is divided into Study skills and Review. On the Study skills page there is an age-appropriate introduction to different types of graphic organisers, such as content maps, tables, Venn diagrams…, as well as ideas for different revision techniques which can be applied to all their learning. The Review page tests their understanding of both content and language.
■■ LEvELs 1 & 2
Let’s remember. Simple activities designed to test content, such as matching, multiple choice and simple writing activities. Students are also encouraged to evaluate their own learning with a simple self-evaluation grid at the very end of the unit.
■■ LEvELs 5 & 6
Revise. Here the division into Study Skills and Review is continued with a greater level of challenge to the activities. Students are also tested on their speaking and writing skills.

We are aware that bilingual education has transformed the teaching process into an authentic challenge. Teachers now need to communicate effectively in a foreign language as well as possess detailed knowledge of often complex curricular content.
For this reason we have an expert group of consultants and teacher trainers whose job is to share best CLIL practices to optimise your classes and create a highly motivating learning environment.
