BIKE RACKS for
BUSINESSES
THE LAKE TAHOE BIKE COALITION & THE TAHOE FUND are teaming up to help get more bike racks installed at businesses around Lake Tahoe. If you are a business and interested in installing new bike racks, we invite you to apply for this program.
Increasing bicycle parking supports a vibrant community by providing much needed amenities, reducing the rate of bicycle theft, and improving the recreational and travel experience. Bicycle parking has been shown to increase visitation at local businesses and are a visual representation of the Region’s emphasis on sustainability and environmental protection.
If your location is selected, the Bike Coalition will coordinate the ordering, shipping & handling, and professional installation of bike racks at your business location. With grant support from the Tahoe Fund, the bike racks will be offered at a low or no cost option.
APPLY NOWTO REQUEST a bike rack, please visit surveymonkey.com/r/YX2XTJQ to complete the application form.
INTERESTED BUSINESSES or property owners must show that they have space for and authority to have racks installed. Businesses may choose the type of rack they prefer from two options, each with a bolt-down or free-standing version. Businesses will be chosen based on ability to provide matching funds, experienced or projected bike rack use, and community benefit such as providing bike parking for multiple businesses or community necessities such as post offices, banks, and grocery stores.
APPLY ONLINE between now and June 7. Businesses will be notified by mid-June and installations are expected on or around July 15.

THE RACKSTwo bike racks are available from Ground Control Systems based in Sacramento. These two styles provide secure bike parking, but have different physical space and installation surface requirements.
VARSITY STYLEThe Varsity style is the most secure and requires the least amount of space because bikes can only be parked in one manner which keeps the parking area orderly. There is also a free-standing version which can be moved seasonally or to accommodate maintenance.
The approximate final cost for either the bolt-down or free-standing Varsity is $300 per rack and each rack parks two bikes. The final cost includes all shipping and handling and professional installation. Space requirements: 24” away from any wall, 36” away from any sidewalk or street, and 32” between racks.
HOOP RUNNERThe Hoop Runner or “Inverted-U” style is a basic rack that provides security and durability. These take up more and unpredictable space because riders can park their bikes in various configurations. There is also a free-standing version of these created by attaching 3–5 hoops on a rail.
The approximate cost for the bolt-down Hoop Runner is $150 per rack and each rack parks two bikes. The free-standing version is approximately $185 per hoop with a 3-hoop minimum ($560).
Space requirements: 30” away from any wall, 24” away from any sidewalk or street, and 24” between racks.
