Bike Lane Excerpts from Road One Powerpoint

This is a REAL bike lane
Bike lanes must have a sign on a pole, a painted symbol on the lane, an 4- 8 inch stripe adjacent to the traffic lane, and a minimum width of 4 feet. Unfortunately
“they” include the unrideable gutter pan, giving us three feet in reality.Anything else is a shoulder!
RS Matt
A Bike Route is a street that is supposed to be friendly to cyclists. It requires no stripe,
but may have a shoulder stripe

• These shoulder stripes are often confused by both bicyclists and motorists as genuine bike lanes. They are often too narrow to be used safely at common bicycling speeds, and they give cyclists and motorists the wrong conception of what constitutes sharing of the road. Many traffic professionals mistakenly still believe they are doing bicyclists a favor my placing these misleading stripes.
