General for BWM and BWTS

USCG BWM requirement has entered into force after 1 Dec. 2013

Implementation schedules for ballast water management system

Should be Type-approved by USCG to sail within US Port, however allowed for no longer than 5 years on condition of approval AMS by USCG (CG-OES Policy Letter No.13-01, 25 Sep. 2013)

Recently, 5 years limitation on a vessel’s max. duration of an extension was removed. (CG-OES Policy Letter No.13-01, Rev.1, 10 Sep. 2015)

This mean that continuous operation of an AMS installed onboard may be accepted. Extension requests must be written in English and submitted electrically as an e-mail (environmental_standard@uscg.mil), with an application spreadsheet(refer to www.krs.co.kr) with required information.

Beyond Compliance 17

UV Direct Flow Electrolysis

Advantage 1. Available to sail to fresh water zone 2. No effect on corrosion

1. Effectiveness for killing lives 2. Easier operation

Shortage 1. Effectiveness depending on turbidity of water 2. Treated by UV on De-ballasting Mode

1. limited fresh water zone sailing 2. Increasing power consumption on lower PSU, lower temp. of sea water 3. Effect on corrosion for ballast tank

Ozone Injection Side-Stream Electrolysis

Advantage 1. Available to sail to fresh water zone 2. Oil Tanker and Chemical Tanker 3. Better for large size of ship

1. Oil Tanker and Chemical Tanker 2. Large size of ship 3. Effectiveness for killing lives

Shortage

1. harmfulness for ship’s crew 2. Power Consumption 3. Worse for small size of ship owing to BWTS size 3. Effect on corrosion for ballast tank

1. limited fresh water zone sailing 2. increasing power consumption on lower PSU, lower temp. of sea water 3. Effect on corrosion for ballast tank
