THE IRAN DEAL - Nearly 600 people heard Caroline Glick, Deputy Managing Editor of The Jerusalem Post, speak live at BT about the implications of the Iran Deal. Watch a video broadcast of this event at bethtfiloh.com/live.

8. On major holidays we have a petting zoo for our children.
9. Once a month we have a Minyan Meyuchad for adults with special needs.
10. Amongst our speakers and entertainers there have been: Alan Dershowitz, Charles Krauthammer, Jay Leno, Oprah Winfrey, Natan

and innovates; a nation that lives by democracy, liberty and human rights/freedoms for all people. Each investment rejects the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement and enables the development of a country known for producing technologies and innovations that connect, feed, and heal the world. Israel Bonds has helped Israel reach many milestones – your support for Israel Bonds will help Israel maintain its economic strength and grow its accomplishments.
Israel Bonds were introduced 64 years ago. Since then close to $40 billion have been the acquired by thousands upon thousands of individual and institutional investors worldwide for strengthening, supporting, and connecting with Israel. Never, in all that time, has Israel missed an interest or redemption payment on Israel Bonds. The strength of the Israel Bonds campaign has been the synagogue’s appeals and, once again, Howard
Rosenblatt will be chairing the Israel Bonds/Beth Tfiloh appeal.
Continuing the 100% match for this coming High Holy Days campaign, Israel Bonds Maryland is excited to announce that there will be two ADDITIONAL matching partners in addition to Hopkins Federal Savings Bank and The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore. They are The Haron Dahan Foundation and Sandra R. & Malcolm C. Berman. This will ensure that every dollar invested will continue to become TWO DOLLARS towards helping Israel.

11. Every Monday morning, 100 women gather to study Torah at Beth Tfiloh.
12. Every year Beth Tfiloh leads the country in purchases of Israel Bonds.
13. In the last 10 years, four of the leaders of the Maryland Israel Bond Campaign and five of the leaders of the Women’s Division are from our synagogue.
14. This year our High School had the largest contingency at the AIPAC Conference.
15. Ours is the only Jewish day school with not one, but two, lacrosse teams – one for boys and one for girls.
16. This year three of our Dahan High School seniors received perfect scores on their SATs.
17. While enrollment is down in day schools across the country, ours is growing. Even more unique is that all the children come to school with a smile on their face.
18. Every year we award over $3.5 million dollars in financial assistance for our day school.
19. There is no synagogue in the country that has our diversity – Orthodox and non-Orthodox, observant and non-observant; some women cover their hair, some wear pants, some are from Israel and some can’t read Hebrew, some are wealthy and some can’t afford it – all are welcome.
20. Some walk to shul from their homes on Shabbos, some walk to shul from their cars on Shabbos – all are welcomed with open arms.
21. Twelve donors have made million dollar gifts to Beth Tfiloh.
22. We have a Cantor who believes the Messiah has come.
23. One of our rabbis befriended Warren Buffet.
24. One of our rabbis has had four children in the last six years … and he’s not ultra-Orthodox!
25. One of our rabbis has been blessed by the Pope, eaten latkes with the President, been honored by Israel’s Prime Minister, had a toast with the King of Jordan and sells his chometz to the Governor.
26. Our Director of Education wears higher heels than any other educator in America … and stands head and shoulders over them.
On behalf of the entire Beth Tfiloh family, our clergy, our administrative staff, and our Synagogue and School leadership, we wish you and your family a New Year filled good health, happiness, and much “Yiddishe naches.”

A REMARKABLE FALL SEMESTERFOUR WEDNESDAY EVENINGS - OCTOBER 21, 28, NOVEMBER 4, 11
MERCAZ Fall Semester
Session 1, 7-8 pm Are We One?
RABBI MITCHELL WOHLBERG For most of the world all Jews are the same. However, within the Jewish world, there are many differences in regard to dress, ritual, practices and beliefs. Let’s explore what unites us … and what divides us: • Misnagdim and Chasidim • Ashkenazim and Sefardim
• American Jews and Israelis • Orthodox and non-Orthodox
Session 2, 8-9 pm Choose one exciting elective courseAmerican-Israeli Media and How It WorksMR. PHIL JACOBS Examine different forms the media takes while covering the very same news event or feature. Participants will be placed in the position of “editor” or “assignment editor,” given actual stories, and asked for coverage strategy. Then they will compare their ideas to what actually happened in the coverages of media companies ranging from Ha’aretz to Times of Israel to the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, CNN, Fox and others.
Bridge to Healing: Finding Strength to Cope with IllnessMS. ISRAELA MEYERSTEIN Israela Meyerstein, author of Bridge to Healing; Finding Strength to Cope with Illness, will share ancient and modern wisdom informed by a Jewish perspective to help patients, family members, caregivers, friends, and health care professionals during illness, treatment, and recovery. Learning to create a “Practical Spiritual Toolbox” can strengthen coping while facing stress, renew one’s spirit, and improve well-being.
Exemplary and Exceptional Jewish WomenMRS. REBECCA SHIMONI-STOIL Doctoral Candidate/Lecturer, JHU Take a close look at the lives and times of eight exemplary and exceptional Jewish women: Bruria in Talmudic Era; Donna Gracia Hanassi and Gluckel of Hameln in Medieval Times;
Rebecca Gratz and Mem Cohen in 19th Century America; and Rosa Luxembourg, Golda Meir, and Bella Abzug in the 20th Century.
MERCAZ LENDING LIBRARY: BOOKS AND VIDEOSThrough the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Silverman (z”l) MERCAZ is able to provide a lending library of both books and videos that reflect the richness of Jewish thought and variety of Jewish experience.
Located in the Tuvin Library next to the MERCAZ office, the library offers an array of books – fiction, memoirs, biographies, Jewish history, current affairs, self help, and cooking – and a collection of outstanding Israeli and Jewish films.
MERCAZ Library Hours: Monday – Thursday: 10 am–3 pm; Friday: 9–11 am. Closed holidays and weekends.
Lost in TranslationRABBI JONATHAN GROSS Translations are nothing but commentaries. When people quote the Bible in English, are they telling you what the Torah actually says, or are they just giving you one person’s opinion? This four-part series will provide you with the tools to navigate through different English translations of the Torah, and decide for yourself what is the true Word of God.
Swing DancingMS. SHERRY BENEDEK Rebellious teens had few outlets in Nazi Germany. With American swing music banned as “decadent,” some teens used jazz music and swing dancing to express their “non-conformity” and “free-thinking.” Join Mercaz for an analysis of the film Swing Kids then learn and enjoy swing dancing with us.
Understanding Human BehaviorMR. PAUL BOLENBAUGH How do we explain human motivation for good or evil, for violence or peacefulness? This course explores the philosophical, psychological, social, anthropological, and biological reasons behind human behavior and for the choices we all make. There will be special emphasis on understanding behavior during the Holocaust.

Mazal tov to newly-minted alum Zach Azrael ‘15 on being named a 2015 Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Awards recipient for founding the Tutoring Outreach Program - TOP, in partnership with Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake and the US Dream Academy. Through the TOP Program, BT High School student volunteers facilitated academic clubs and extracurricular activities for Pimlico Elementary/Middle School students with incarcerated parents, helping to instill a love of learning and set them on the path to college. Zach is one of just 15 teen leaders from across the US to receive this prestigious award. Zach has been featured in The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, on WBAL-TV and WBFF Fox news. Yasher koach!
Meir Program: Multi-Sensory Jewish Education
When Jennifer and Michael Sachs’ son, Zachary, was diagnosed with dyslexia like his two older brothers, they decided that they wanted to give him a Jewish learning experience that would meet his unique needs. “When we came to the realization that a regular Hebrew School program wasn’t a possibility for him, we decided to try to start our own program,” Jennifer says. And so they worked with Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Beth Tfiloh’s Director of Education, to create the Meir Program for children with language-based learning differences.
The Meir Program is taught by Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School alumna Jessie (Barthlow) Goldberg ’03, who holds a Master’s in Special Education from Goucher College. Morah Jessie’s extensive experience in working with people with language-based differences means that she
is able to expertly integrate each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) guidelines and ensure that their unique needs are met in her classroom. Her specialty is the Orton Gillingham teaching method, the multi-sensory approach to education used at the Jemicy School, where many of the Meir Program students attend the rest of the week.
“Every child deserves a Jewish education – each child can be reached in his or her own way,” says Mrs. Schorr. In response to the overwhelming positive response to the inaugural year, Mrs. Schorr adds, “We anticipate building on this year’s success and planning on the expansion

Daily Minyan MusingsMarc I. Leavey, M.D., Past President, Beth Tfiloh Congregation
Every morning, just before the Shema, one passage’s imagery is so powerful that it has become a Chassidic song, used as the name of charities and even schools. But every morning at Beth Tfiloh we experience the words of this passage literally, and you can take part as well.
We read “a new light will shine on Zion” as the sun rises and shines through a giant glass eastern wall in the morning minyan. And the light of that rising sun illuminates some people who come to minyan to remember someone recently lost, and those who passed years ago. The people in the minyan can serve as a source of comfort and support for those facing a loss of their own. Returning to the minyan to mark the anniversary of a loss on the yahrzeit of a loved one honors that person’s life, and preserves the memory of the individual within the community.
That new morning light illuminates more than mourning, though. It is customary for a Bar Mitzvah to come to the Thursday morning minyan to have an aliyah, and perhaps leyn the Torah portion if able, a few days before their special Shabbat. This is often a low pressure, quiet family event, without fanfare or hype.
New parents come to name a baby, not waiting until Shabbat to so bless their newborn. A birthday, anniversary, or some other simcha is celebrated. While there is a nice breakfast after minyan during the week, those coming for a special reason often sponsor something a bit more elaborate, a very affordable way to remember, honor, and celebrate.
You don’t have to know Hebrew or how to daven; there are folks on both sides of the mechitzah that can help you, and joining in with “Amen”
is relatively straightforward. The daily minyan provides an environment which allows the community to share in an individual’s joy or sorrow, through which the individual gains comfort and strength, becoming a part of that community to help others. Beth Tfiloh is a huge community. You don’t all have to come every day, and if you did, frankly, I don’t know where you’d all sit. The chapel only seats 200. But coming for a simcha, a yahrzeit, or just when you want a little time to meditate, you and the minyan would benefit.
All this applies to the evening minyan as well. Although there is no Torah service, there is learning, with a short class given by one of our rabbis. Occasions and people come to mind and it’s a great place to put the day’s events into perspective.
In the evening or in the morning, every day or now and then, your participation in the daily minyan ultimately strengthens our community, whose strength can be at your side at an important time of your life, funneling that strength back to you. By doing this, by participating at whatever level we can, it ultimately allows us to fulfill the second half of the sentence I quoted above: “that we all will speedily merit its light.”
