Bell RingersOn a loose leaf piece of paper complete the following bell ringers. 1. (-56) + 32 + (-17)2. 23 + 148+ (-35)3. Nemo is swimming 78 feet below sea level. He chases Dory in a game of tag 46 feet deeper. Then they rise 52 feet. At what elevation are Nemo and Dory swimming. 4. Write a real world problem to show the additive inverse of 96.

Subtraction of Integers 1

Today I will be able to subtract integers given an equation.

What is subtraction of integers

When we talk about the difference between two integers we are looking at how far they are apart from each other on a number line. (-6) – (-2)=

3 – 2 =

(-4) – 1 =

1 – (-3) =

(-3 ) – (-1) =

What happened when there was a

subtraction sign and a negative sign?

Rule of Subtractionsubtracting a number is the same as adding its additive inverse(or opposite). Ex: 4 – 3 = 1 is the same as 4 + (-3) = 1

(-5) – 2 = (-7) is the same as

(-5) + (-2) =(-7)

Let’s PracticeCopy the following problem and steps in your journal as I model.

Solve: 8 -12 =

Step one: Change the subtraction sign to addition (rule of subtraction) Ex: 8 + 12Step two: Change the positive 12 to a negative 12 (rule of subtraction) Ex: 8 + (-12)Step three: follow the directions of the addition of integers song. (Same signs add and keep. Different signs subtract. Keep the sign of the larger number, then you’ll be exact.Ex: 12 - 8 = 4. 12 is the larger number and 12 is negative so the answer will be negative.
