PROGRAM NOTES

Aside from the popular Christmas standards that fill the air in December, true traditional secular American carols are rather few and far between. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, however, has stood the test of time next to Jingle Bells and Up on the House-Top.

The writer of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is unknown, but because of the choice of words and their placement in the text, we can approximate its origin as being from the late nineteenth century or perhaps the early twentieth century.

The tune is cast in a free and easy swing style that is instantly grasped by young players. Audiences will delight in the fresh treatment of a tune that can’t help but bring a smile during the happiest time of the year.

NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR

Since this arrangement may be an ensemble’s first exposure to swing style, time should be taken to explain the basic rhythms that will be encountered.

The core rhythm that all wind players will find in measures 25–26 repeats frequently throughout. A suggestion would be for students to look at this and clap it back after you have demonstrated it to them. Then as a warm-up exercise, they could be instructed to play this rhythm on each degree of the B-flat major scale. Finally, they could play measures 25–26 as they appear, and then look through their parts for other occurrences of this rhythm before an initial read-through.

For a slightly longer performance time, an optional repeat may be made from the end of measure 36 back to the beginning.
