When you or a loved one are suffering, Recovery Without Walls (RWW) is there to help.
Recovery Without Walls successfully treats patients with an individualized, outpatient
program, founded and directed by Howard Kornfeld, MD, a leading authority on treating
addiction and pain management.
Dr. Kornfeld has decades of experience serving the Marin community with a pioneering medical
methodology that naturally aids recovery.
RWW uniquely addresses the anxiety and stress of detoxification with medically sophisticated
caring and one on one, mind body healing. For more information please refer to the article
about Recovery Without Walls on the following page.

Recovery Without Walls, a service of Howard Kornfeld,
M.D. & Associates, is a medically based practice for the
treatment of pain and addiction. Using an outpatient approach,
patients are surrounded by a support network, easing them out
of pain or substance abuse and allowing them to recover their
lives without the confi nement of a residential stay.
Most addiction programs require a residential stay of a
month or more. Patients are isolated from their families and
lives, which can make re-entry challenging and stressful.
In contrast, Recovery Without Walls uses the best medical
treatment combined with psychotherapy and cross-cultural
disciplines in an outpatient facility, whenever possible.
Th is allows patients to recover within the pattern and
responsibilities of their own lives.
Recovery Without Walls provides unique, fl exible treatment
planning. Patients have access to whatever level of care they
need, ranging from outpatient to round-the-clock care,
provided by highly experienced personnel. If a 24/7 approach
is required, the practice has a private cottage near the offi ce to
accommodate patients.
Dr. Kornfeld’s extensive medical training uniquely qualifi es
him as Medical Director of Recovery Without Walls. He
is Board Certifi ed in Emergency,
Pain and Addiction Medicine, and
conducts detoxifi cation in a gentle
and therapeutic manner. Patients
do not need to fear a violent and
unmedicated withdrawal process. Dr.
Kornfeld is a pioneer in the use of
buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is a
medication used worldwide to treat pain for the past 30 years.
Th e practitioners at Recovery Without Walls are adept at using
this medication, also known as Suboxone, for opiate addiction
as well. Buprenorphine has an opiate with reduced addictive
properties and stabilizes the nervous system without causing
euphoria or cravings the way other opiates can. It also assists the
body in dealing with pain, allowing the production of natural
endorphins rather than shutting off the body’s responses.
Patients function normally, without the lethargy and sleepiness
associated with other medications.
Complementing sophisticated pharmacology at Recovery
Without Walls is a holistic approach to recovery. Patients
are immediately put on nutritional supplements to boost
their immune systems and decrease infl ammation. Skilled
psychotherapists are paired with each patient and their families
to begin therapeutic healing. Patients are encouraged to embark
on a spiritual path in a 12-Step Program. Trips can be planned to
Green Gulch Farm, Spirit Rock and other local spiritual centers to
further encourage spiritual
healing and foundation.
Each client gets a Personal
Recovery Assistant (PRA).
Th e PRA is like a reliable
family member, perhaps
driving the client to 12-step
meetings, assisting them to
eat healthy foods, exercise
and sleep well. Cross-
cultural approaches, such
as massage and yoga for
calming, and acupuncture
for pain management, are
often used.
As patients are ready, careful criteria are designed allowing
patients to move into the world independently. Th e support
system at Recovery Without Walls fl exes as needed, ensuring
patients continue toward recovery while building a rich life.
Th e practice has a strong track record of helping those who
could not fi nd answers with other traditional programs.
Recently, Dr. Kornfeld and his colleagues have had
a research paper accepted for
publication in the American Journal of Th erapeutics on surgical patients
taking buprenorphine. Historically,
stopping buprenorphine before an
operation was recommended, but Dr.
Kornfeld’s study found no ill eff ects
and signifi cant benefi ts of staying on
the drug during surgery and recovery.
If the battle against either chronic pain or substance abuse
is proving too much, Recovery Without Walls may have the
solutions you seek. ✿

Pilates is like swimming on land, and anyone can do
it. Th at’s what Novato Pilates owner Kathy Lou Kronenberg-
er found out when she turned to Pilates to heal a back injury.
She was so won over that she became a trainer and bought
the 1,500-square-foot studio. Th e airy and comfortable
space encourages a fun environment while giving a complete
workout for the entire body. Skilled instructors teach with
a nurturing sensibility, guiding students through exercises
for every muscle group in the body followed by extensive
stretching. Entire families come to work out together, with
the youngest student being 10 and the oldest 76. Th ere are
up to 25 classes per week, mostly using the popular Reformer
as well as Pilates wall units. An introductory off er of three
private sessions for $150 or fi ve for $289 will help you get in
the swim of things with Novato Pilates. Th e studio will soon
begin off ering private lessons using the Gyrotonic Tower,
so call for more information. ✿

Lifestyle in Balance
As the debate over healthcare heats up in Washington,
it’s reassuring to learn of health options that empower women to
take a proactive stance. Nurse Practitioner Donna Marie Scippa
is a proponent of one such option—breast thermography—be-
lieving that early detection is the key to eradicating breast cancer
in our lifetime. Th ermography has been around since 1982 as ad-
junctive screening. Regrettably, it hasn’t caught on in the arena of
Western medicine, but it still has an important place at the table
with the other modalities used for breast cancer screening.
Based on the principle that metabolic activity in both pre-can-
cerous tissue and the surrounding area is higher than in normal
breast tissue, temperature variations can be detected by medical in-
frared cameras. Analyzed by sophisticated computers, the informa-
tion provides an early risk assessment. Women from the age of 20
and up can benefi t from this screening.
Breast thermography is non-invasive and radiation-free, thus
giving women a safe test that empowers them to be more proactive
in their own health maintenance. ✿

DiPietro Todd Salon
has a long track record of help-
ing Marinites to look their
best. From fashionable cuts to
the latest in color technology,
their stylists are on the cutting
edge of the latest trends.
Seventeen years ago partners
John diPietro and Kim and
Andrew Todd opened the Mill
Valley location of this elegant
house of beauty. With manager
Jill Newgard at the helm, cli-
ents get personal attention and can be assured their needs will
be met. Customer service is their number one priority and it
shows as this outstanding salon is consistently awarded “Best
of” status year after year.
Stylists at diPietro Todd strive to satisfy their clients by
providing a luxurious shampoo,
thorough consultation and the
perfect haircut or color to suit
their lifestyle. In addition, cus-
tomers are taught how to main-
tain their hair at home with good
blow-drying instruction, recom-
mendations of shampoos and
products to preserve the color,
and other techniques to get the most out of their hairstyle. It’s
imperative for customer satisfaction that the chosen look for
each client not only work for their lifestyle but also for their
hair texture, face shape and skin and eye color. All this, as well
as keeping up with the very latest trends in hair fashion, has
clients beating a path to the door of diPietro Todd. For fall,
colorists are recommending richer, darker tones that comple-
ment a paler complexion while cutters have noted a resurgence
in shorter styles with hair off the face. Bangs are now passé.
If a special event is in your near future, diPietro Todd
Salon has coined the term “Bedroom or Ballroom, you
decide.” With fall art premieres and holiday parties just
around the corner, a stylish do could be in order. Updos are
a specialty, so don’t let that dressy occasion go by without
consulting a stylist about the best look for you.
To get rid of frizzy hair, consider going go in for a special
keratin smoothing treatment. Th e product is worked into
hair using a fl at iron. Besides getting rid of the frizz, the
procedure cuts down on blow-dry time at home and makes
the hair look healthy and lustrous. Th is smoothing treat-
ment is one of the hottest tickets this autumn.
With fi ve locations going strong, the Todds (regrettably,
John diPietro died in 1993) are especially proud of success-
fully sharing the business with their six partners. Each partner
focuses on managing one of the salon locations as well as
a teaching academy. Two of the partners run the academy,
which off ers classes to other
salons interested in the knowl-
edge and techniques of diPietro
Todd’s talented staff . It’s clear
that the company encourages
and supports the professional
growth of its employees.
Whether you’re in the market
for a whole new look or an updo
for a special event, you can rest assured that you will be in
good hands at diPietro Todd. ✿

With 25 years in the business of assessing hearing,
Audiology Services of Marin is here to serve the community.
Th eir main goal is to provide 100 percent satisfaction so that
patients achieve optimum hearing results.
Having strong relationships with all the local doctors has
helped Audiology Services of
Marin grow their business.
Widely respected among the
medical community, referrals
are one of the main ways they
get new clients. On the fi rst visit, the staff of audiologists do
a battery of hearing tests to determine the patient’s baseline.
Given that information, the doctors are highly knowledgeable
about the diff erent hearing products that can help in the envi-
ronments where the patient has the most challenges.
In the last fi ve years, with the advent of digital technology,
vast improvements have been made in hearing aids. Using a
“bluetooth” device, hearing-loss patients can now hook into
cell phones, land-line phones and televisions to have greatly
improved levels of hearing. Functions are programmable so
that the apparatus can accommodate situations with more
background noise, such as restaurants, or a location like a
concert where more focused listening is required. Th e au-
diologists at ASOM pair the patient's hearing need with the
appropriate hearing aid and are experts at programming them
to fi t every circumstance.
Audiology Services of Marin
is proud to off er “Minute
Clinics” at local senior centers.
Trained staff check batteries on
hearing aids, clean them and
also look in ears to ensure they are healthy. Th is is just one of
the ways they serve the community.
ASOM is committed to overall patient satisfaction. From
booking appointments to trying out a hearing aid for 30 days,
the doctors and staff want to help patients attain the best pos-
sible hearing. ✿

Caregiving is a demanding role, and it is easy to
neglect your own health and well-being when you are deeply
involved with addressing your loved one’s needs. To relieve
stress and prevent burnout, caregivers, whether full-time or
only part-time, need periodic breaks to recharge and enjoy
their own lives. Just as we all need and expect days away from
the workplace, caregivers, too, need a break from the demands
of caring for a loved one.
One of the best ways for a caregiver to obtain a needed rest
is to arrange a short-term stay for his or her loved one in a safe,
caring and nurturing environment.
Th ere are a number of senior living communities, including
Áegis of Corte Madera, that off er short-term stays. Th ese brief
stays, also called “respite” or “vacation stays,” are also avail-
able to help seniors recently discharged from the hospital who
temporarily need a little extra help.
Vacation stays provide individual attention and support,
the comforts of home and the company of other residents in
the community. Vacation and respite stays vary from just a
few days to more than a month.
At communities such
as Áegis of Corte Madera
short-stay guests are treat-
ed to private apartments,
meals and snacks prepared
by the resident chef, and
the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of recreational,
social and cultural activities. In addition, guests receive what-
ever assistance they require for daily functioning from a profes-
sionally trained staff .
Th ough many assisted living communities off er the ameni-
ties and comfort of home, as well as a caring and profession-
ally trained staff , not all are equal. When evaluating a respite
care program, you should ensure that you’re getting the qual-
ity care your loved one deserves.
Here are some questions you can ask:
• Are families limited to a certain number of
hours for services needed?
• Can I meet and interview the people who will be
providing the respite care?
• Does the program provide transportation?
• Does the program keep an active fi le on medical
conditions and other needs? Is there a written
care plan?
• How are the caregivers trained? Do they receive
extra training, where appropriate, to meet spe-
cifi c family needs?
• How far ahead of time do I need to call to
arrange services?
Costs for respite care, as well as the services provided, vary
widely. Long-term care in-
surance policies often cover
some of the cost of these
stays, and federal and/or
state programs may also
help pay for respite care.
As a caregiver, it is important that you take some time
out for yourself every day. Some things you can do on your
own without leaving home include scheduling time to call
a friend or family member each day, taking a short nap or
doing a little gardening. Ask a friend to come over for a few
hours while you go out to a movie, take a long walk or focus
on a favorite hobby.
When you need a longer break, or for times when assistance
isn’t available, short-term stays are an invaluable, worry-free
option. Taking care of yourself, and being mindful of your
own needs, is one of the best things you can do for your loved
one. And by giving yourself a break, you can help ensure that
you’ll keep giving the very best of care. —Candice Moses

26 Pacifi c Sun-Marin’s Best Every Week
Life contains a lot of uncertainty. Just when you think
the road is smooth... then up comes another blind curve. It’s
a good thing that the Spiritual Healing Center of Marin is
in the neighborhood. Dedicated to practicing the universal
truths of all spirituality, Reverend Carol Eckels-Gaeddert is
the director of the sanctuary.
Join in every Tuesday evening for the meditation and healing
service from 7 to 9pm. Experi-
ence Spiritual Healing, Philip-
pine psychic surgery that re-
moves disease, negative patterns
and beliefs from your physical,
emotional and spiritual bodies.
Merge with your Higher Self
using the Yoga of Christ Jesus
and the Integral Yoga of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother through
prayer, mediation and healing. Here’s what people are saying
about Tuesday meditation:
“Thank you for the miracle healing I received from Tuesday
night! Sincerest Thanks! Laurie”
“Thank you to someone who is directly involved and in-
strumental in helping you to discover who you really are, the
power of God was so strong, it was incredible. I feel different
today. Thank you. Michael”
The goals of the Spiritual Healing Center are to embrace
the universal truths from all faiths. We are moving toward self
realization practicing the yoga of all enlightened beings. We
offer a variety of spiritual courses: Spiritual Healing certifica-
tion, Psychic Surgery program, Ministerial program and our
Divinity program.
Participants seek to break free of their personal ignorance and
integrate their own energy and spiritual information and that
provides inner peace and wellness. Our services are open to the
public and are held every Tuesday from 7 to 9pm and also held
the first Sunday of every month at 11am. Spiritual development
programs meet once a month from 10am to 5pm.
The Higher Power Purification, a four-week meditation
and purification series, is offered on Thursday evenings from
7 to 9pm and help one to embark on their own spiritual path.
These sessions help you move into peace with yourself and
emerge with a golden glow. Love yourself more and be the
change that you want to see.
The Spiritual Healing Center has expanded the popular music
program. There are monthly harp concerts, performed by the
world-renowned Joel Andrews, our Minister of Music. Listening
to healing music awakens your grace and encourages inner-well-
ness that puts the spirit and the body into peace and harmony.
The Sanctuary Store will open the day after Thanksgiving,
providing the perfect outlet for holiday gifts. Sacred art, crys-
tals, clothing from India, nutritional supplements, Herbs, holy
water, and healing music cds are available. Custom mixed vegan
protein powder is an incredibly healing blend of ground organic
peas sweetened with stevia. It is sugar, dairy, soy and wheat-free
and comes in vanilla, chocolate
or chocolate mint flavors. An
excellent protein source for
those who wish to lose weight
or need a nutritional boost due
to a compromised immune sys-
tem. Avoid the holiday madness
at the mall this year and do all
your shopping at the Sanctuary Store.
The Spiritual Healing Center is proud to offer lunchtime
renewal by opening the doors to the public from 11 to 1 on
weekdays for inner reflection. Come fill up spiritually with
meditation and healing and leave feeling refreshed to tackle
the rest of the work day.
When the road gets a little bumpy remember the Spiritual
Healing Center of Marin, a neighbor in deed. They can help
you awaken your spiritual path. Call now to receive a free
newsletter or free sample of Higher Power Protein. ✿
