Battlefield Primary School Handbook 2017-2018
1
Dear Parent/Carer,
It is my pleasure to introduce myself as the Head Teacher of Battlefield
Primary School.
I am delighted to be leading the team at Battlefield at such an exciting time in
the school’s development. Once the on-going refurbishment is complete, we will
have even better facilities in which to work and learn. The school community at
Battlefield is diverse, hard-working and, most importantly, full of fun and
enthusiasm!
We aim to meet the needs of all learners and offer a range of challenging and
enjoyable activities, both during the school day and beyond. We see parents
and carers as key partners and we offer many opportunities for you to be
actively involved in your child’s learning, and in the wider life of the school.
I am always happy to speak with children, staff or parents who have something
on their mind. Whether it is a worry or concern, a query or suggestion, I am
more than happy to talk it over. Please do not hesitate to get in touch and I will
always do my best to make time to see you.
In everything we do at Battlefield, we aim to ensure that the children have the
opportunity to:
Be Brave - Be Brilliant - Be Your Best at Battlefield
With every good wish

Pupil Absences
Within Battlefield Primary School, good attendance is encouraged at all
times and children rewarded accordingly. Parents are asked to advise if
their son or daughter is going to be absent. This should be done as early as
possible on the first day of absence. If the young person is going to be
absent for some time, it would be helpful to know at the earliest
opportunity. The school uses daily text messaging to inform parents and
carers of absence if no contact is made. All unexplained absence is
investigated by the school and appropriate action taken. All calls must be
made to the Pupil Absence Reporting Line on 0141 287 0039. The line
is open between 08.00-15.30 Monday to Friday.
If your child has an unavoidable appointment during school hours, please
send a note to your child’s teacher and collect them from the school office.

The school nurse visits at various times during the year for routine health
checks, vaccinations and medical examinations. Parents are kept informed by
letter.
If a child becomes ill during the course of the school day, he/she may require
to be sent home. Please ensure that you keep the school informed of all
contact details.
Parents should inform the school of any medical requirements relating to
their child. If a child requires medication during the school day, parents
must complete the appropriate medical form. This is available on request
from the school office.
Medical
Emergencies
We make every effort to maintain a full educational service, but on some
occasions circumstances arise which lead to disruption. Schools may be
affected by, for example, severe weather, temporary interruption of
transport, power failures or difficulties of fuel supply.
In such cases, we shall do all we can to let you know about the details of our
closure or re-opening by using letters, texts, Twitter and the school and
Glasgow City Council websites.
Religious Observance
Our school is fortunate to have a close link with the local church. The
minister assists with the Christianity element of Religious and Moral
Education and provides opportunities for religious observance. Parents have
the right to withdraw their child from religious observance and should inform
the school in writing.

We have a Nurture Room in Battlefield Primary, called ‘The Honeypot’. In the
Honeypot, we are able to help small groups of children who need a little extra
support settling into school life in Primary 1, for a variety of reasons.
We keep in regular contact with the parents and carers of the children who are
part of the Honeypot group. We arrange meetings every 6 weeks to discuss the
children’s targets and progress. We understand that parents and carers want
the very best start at school for their children and we are here to help.
In the morning, they line up and go into school with their own class. After
registration they go to the Honeypot. They rejoin their class just before break
and lunch-time. They join their class in the afternoons and also take part in
whole class events such as assemblies. This ensures that the children getting
support in the Honeypot but still feel like they belong in their own class.
We reintegrate children back into their own class full–time, gradually, as soon
as they are ready. This has been achieved very successfully over the last ten
years and we hope to continue this success this year.
Mrs Roz Wilson (Nurture teacher) and Mrs Kathleen Carberry (Nurture
Assistant) work with a maximum of 6 children in the Honeypot.
We teach the children with an emphasis on developing social skills and
confidence. Activities are varied and elements of the curriculum are taught in a
play based context. The small group size in the Honeypot allows us to give the
children more support and be flexible to their individual strengths and needs.

Assessing and Reporting
All children are assessed both formally and informally throughout the year
by the class teacher and at times, by the Senior Leadership Team.
Information on this will be shared with you at Parents’ Nights and through
your child’s Learning Story.
Your child’s Learning Story provides samples of work to evidence progress,
including examples your child has identified that they are especially proud
of.
All Primary 7 children in Scotland complete a profile that will aid with their
transition to Secondary School.
Pupil Support The school has a duty to ensure that all pupils have equal access to the
curriculum, with appropriate support for their needs if required. This
applies to the content of lessons, teaching strategies and minor adaptations
to the school environment. There are a wide range of factors which may
act as a barrier to learning. We are committed to working closely with
parents and carers to ensure that they are fully involved in any decisions
about support for their children’s needs.
Any parent or carer seeking further advice regarding this policy should
contact Mrs Imrie or Mrs McLaughlin, DHTs, in the first instance.
Further information relating to additional support needs is available on the

The Named Person
GIRFEC stands for ‘Getting It Right For Every Child’. This is the Scottish
Government-led approach to making sure that all our children and young
people – and their parents or carers – can get help and support when
needed from birth through to age 18 (or beyond if still in school).
The vast majority of Scotland’s children and young people get the love and
support they need from within their families and their wider, local
communities. But even the most loving and caring families can sometimes
need extra support. The GIRFEC approach aims to make it as easy as
possible for any child or young person (and their parents) to get that help
or support when they need it.
To access support when needed, part 4 of the Children and Young People
Act (Scotland) 2014, states that every child in Scotland has a Named
Person, as a single point of contact. This Named Person has a responsibility
to provide help and support when asked and can draw together other
services if needed, co-ordinating help for the child or parents.
The Named Person for Battlefield Primary is Mr Alan Shields, HT.
Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you want to speak with your
child’s Named Person.

School Improvement On an annual basis, you will receive a copy of our Standards and Quality
report. Copies from previous years are available on the school website.
The Standards and Quality report highlights progress in key curricular
areas such as literacy, numeracy and health & wellbeing.
Our priorities for improvement are detailed in our School Improvement
Plan which is discussed with our Parent Council. Any parent or carer
seeking a copy of the plan can contact the school office or check out our
website.
Our staff team is dedicated to on-going school improvement and
participate in quality professional development opportunities throughout
the year. All school staff, children and parents are involved in identifying
areas for improvement and review.
Promoting Positive Behaviour
Here at Battlefield Primary School, we are immensely proud of our high
standards of behaviour. The children enjoy coming to school here and are
proud to do so. Staff and children work very closely together and have
strong, positive relationships.
We worked hard for our Rights Respecting Schools Award 1 and ensure we
do everything we can to make children aware of their rights and the rights
of others.
Through our ‘Focus of the Month’ we identify with the children an area in
the school that could be improved. The children enjoy this challenge and
work together to achieve it. We also have a pupil led House System.
Staff implement a range of ‘in class’ strategies to continually promote
positive choices and opportunities for reflection.
