Get Reacquainted With The Mercados Alex and Megan will be at Bethany on Sunday, May 8th. They met while serving with
Wycliffe in Cameroon in 2010, and married in 2014. Alex has a passion for using
technology to enable language analysis and Bible translation so that communities
have access to accurate, beautiful, and clear versions of God's Word in the language
that speaks best to their hearts. Megan's heart is to promote literacy in those
languages so that people can read the translated Word for themselves. Megan and
Alex are planning to move to Kenya this year to build advocacy, and alliances across Africa.

From Here To Eternity May Sermon Series
Our next series, from Here to Eternity will begin
Sunday, May 15th. We will take a deeper look at how
once we give our life to Christ we are suppose to
continue to grow in Him, never giving up. When we
come to Christ the idea is not to relax or grow
comfortable in our walk with Him but to continue to run the race striving for a deeper
relationship with Him. Never to be satisfied with where we are but always striving for the
Lord. Paul writes to Timothy in I Timothy 4:8 that “a disciplined life in God is far better
than daily workouts in the gym, making you fit both today and forever. Living for Christ
will benefit us both now and into eternity. Join us Sundays in May as we encourage you
to live for Christ from here to Eternity.

Why Mother’s Day ? Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mother’s Day as a day of
personal celebration between mothers and families. During the
Civil War, Anna's mother, Ann Jarvis, cared for the wounded on
both sides of the conflict. She also tried to orchestrate peace
between Union and Confederate moms by forming a Mother's
Friendship Day. When the elder Jarvis passed away in 1905, her
daughter was devastated. She would read the sympathy cards and
letters over and over, taking the time to underline all the words
that praised and complimented her mother.
Anna found an outlet to memorialize her mother by working to promote a day that
would honor all mothers. Her version of the day involved wearing a white carnation as a
badge and visiting one’s mother or attending church services. But once Mother’s Day
became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies and other
merchants capitalized on its popularity.
Anna soon soured on the commercial interests associated with the day. She wanted
Mother’s Day “to be a day of sentiment, not profit.” She spent her last days deeply in
debt and living in the Marshall Square Sanitarium, a now-closed mental asylum in West
Chester, Pennsylvania. She died on November 24, 1948. Jarvis was never told that her
bill for her time at the asylum was partly paid for by a group of grateful florists.

Nation Day of Prayer Thursday, May 5th @ 12pm
For over twenty years, Bethany has honored the National Day of Prayer
by holding a time of prayer on the front steps of the Township Offices. In
1952, by a joint resolution of Congress, President Harry S. Truman signed
into law the National Day of Prayer. President Ronald Reagan amended
the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year as the
National Day of Prayer. In recognition of this year’s 65th Annual National
Day of Prayer, Bethany Baptist will once again take the lead at noon on Thursday, May 5, 2016 on the steps of the
Clinton Township Offices.
This is not a religious movement nor a chance to merge church and state. This is simply an opportunity for
citizens of this community to gather to pray. We will be praying for the leaders of our community and country, police
and emergency personnel, men and women who serve here and abroad, area businesses and our economy, our
schools and our churches. We would like to encourage you and the people of our township including our township
officials to join us as we pray on that day.
If you have questions or would like more information, you can contact the church office.

Souled Out Wednesday Nights Every Wednesday @7pm Every Wednesday night, our JR & SR HI students get together to
not only have fun but to also build relationships with each other
and with the God who loves them. This is done with the guidance
of caring adult volunteers who are committed to pointing
students to the Lord and encouraging them on their journey. As
we close in on the end of the school year, we’ll be encouraging
students to “Step Up, Not Back” by overcoming common fears
that keep students from being everything God wants them to be.
Then we’ll close out the school year with a 3 week series called
“Plot Twist,” where we’ll discover that some of life’s most
disappointing moments can actually be the thing that makes our
story even better. If you are in JR or SR HI, make it your priority to
be there every week. If you know of a JR or SR HI student, invite
them to be a part of this journey.
Five Day Frenzy & Kids Camp Coming June 20-24th

Camp. Students, 8th and up, are encouraged to volunteer for Kids Camp and be a part of making this a great week
for the children who come. There is a place for everyone! If you have any questions, see Pastor Mike, or email him
at mike@connect2bethany.org.
Graduation Sunday June 5th
We will be recognizing our graduates during the worship service and hosting a small reception for them
afterward. Parents are encouraged to plan on bringing a small display of their child’s accomplishments for that day.
In addition Pastor Mike would like to get both a senior picture and a younger/baby picture to use during the
program. You can email a digital or scanned photo to him at mike@connect2bethany.org. Please see him if you
have any questions.
Students Going On Missions Trip To Manitoulin Island July 9-16th
This is an opportunity for our students to have a positive spiritual impact on young people
this summer. In partnership with Daystar Ministries, our students will play some key roles as
part of the team that leads a Vacation Bible School for children of the native people of
Sheguindah on Manitoulin Island in Canada. In the past, students from our youth group, Keaton Washburn and
Grace Vander Veen, have taken week-long trips up to the island in the winter to meet the needs of natives there.
Now it is your turn. If you are a student currently in 9th-12th grade, and are interested in this trip, please see Pastor
Mike, so you can get more information to start the application and interview process.
Alive Music Festival July 20-24th
This event is for any current 8th grade student up through college & career age. It is a Christian music festival at
Atwood Lake Park in Mineral City, Ohio. It’s four days of fun, packed with Christian music featuring, Switchfoot,
Skillet, For King & Country, Casting Crowns, Sidewalk Prophets, Rend Collective, Vertical Church Band, All Sons &

Missionary of the week, May 2016
May 1 Barbara Blackburn (retired) – Praise for the 5000 reprinted Blaan Scriptures (12%OT and the
entire NT) that have been delivered to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. Pray for the
literacy teachers and pastors of the Blaan churches as they continue to teach and preach the Word
of God to their people.
May 8 Dick & Vicki G. – are involved in traveling and teaching national church leaders in Asia, and
Africa. Pray for their students. Also, Vicki has responded well to her cancer treatments. Please
pray for continued good test results.
May 15 Phil & Julie Parshall (retired) – are living in the SIM Retirement Village in Sebring, FL. Pray for
good health, including no recurrence of Julie’s cancer. Ask God to give them wisdom and strength
to help others in the village. Pray for Julie's outreach in teaching English to Bangladeshi Muslim
ladies.
May 22 John & Anna Kay Haskell – have recently returned from The Netherlands, where they have
worked since 1968. They are seeking contacts for young couples to do church planting work in the
Netherlands. A new pastor is needed for the Breda church. The men of the church are doing well
but a pastor would be better there.
May 29 Sharon Samson (retired) – will be leaving Michigan in May to live in the SIM Retirement Village
in Sebring, FL. Pray for her adjustment to a new community, and for all the details to be worked out
concerning the move. Sharon also requests prayer for new ministry opportunities and health to
continue serving.
SPOTLIGHT ON MISSIONS
Bethany’s Missions Committee Goal
… to equip and enable members and friends of Bethany to be personally involved in obeying the Great Commission
… to provide a support system for our missions families who are following the Lord in reaching out into the world.
The Gift of Translation and God’s Word We often hear of people who do not accept Jesus as Savior until they
have the Scriptures in their own heart language. To translate the Bible
into a new language often involves first, learning to speak the language,
making an alphabet, then writing the language. After that, the
translation begins. This can take many years. Once the translation is
complete it is checked many times by various people. Finally, when all
of the checking is done, it needs to be formatted for printing. This is
where our missionary, Don Block, enters the process. He formats the
text and adds cross references. When he is finished, this precious book
is sent to the printer. Imagine the excitement when the books are
delivered!
This happened recently for the Dagaare tribe in northern Ghana. Don
and Pat Block along with Roger & Norene Russ (the translators) met Saturday, March 12 with a large crowd
gathered amidst great excitement and enthusiasm for the dedication of the Dagaare NT. The Russes and the
Blocks had already visited the Palace of the prefecture Chief of the area to invite him to the dedication. There were
Scripture readings, singing by all, special music by several groups, and the dedication message given by Mr. Block.
Next, New Testaments were presented to various government officials and other special guests. The very first copy
of the New Testament was presented to the Chief, after which he asked to speak. The Chief encouraged all of them
to read the New Testament, because it was in their own language. A table stacked with New Testaments was
waiting at the end of the service. Many were going home with a precious treasure in their hand . . .God’s Word!
Don and Pat say “their hearts are full, having shared in the joy of seeing God’s Word in the hands of the Dagaare
people.” Don now is back in Grand Rapids preparing the Creole NT with Psalms and Proverbs to be printed, and the
Warao Bible (Venezuela) is coming for final formatting. The Blocks thank you for sharing with them in this urgent
ministry – God’s Word for the Millions Who Still Wait.

Trans World Radio making Apps for refugees Aid Agencies are now starting to recognize that depression and mental illness are problems refugees
face due to having lived in survival mode for a long time. Violence within the camps, harsh conditions,
lack of a job, no education, scars of war, inability to communicate, facing new cultures, separation from
family, and vulnerability to extremist groups are all contributing factors to the situation.
In that light, what could be more comforting for a refugee than hearing timely spiritual encouragement
in his or her heart language? Trans World Radio (TWR) decided to use a common tool that is never far
from this target audience. Refugees use smartphones to navigate, keep abreast of the news, to find out
which border is open, and to stay in touch.
TWR just launched an app called Refugee Bridge. It is designed to meet the emotional, psychological
and spiritual needs of displaced people by offering practical and biblical content in the Arabic language.
The intent is to further develop these initiatives to include more languages such as Farsi & Dari. All
content is downloadable, making it easy for users to access programs on the go, even without Wi-Fi
access. TWR is working quickly to reach refugees during the window of time in which they are most open
to hearing the Gospel, putting programs on the app that are based on Jesus Christ that speak and give
hope into their lives.
TWR also offers TWR360, apps that are geared to reach those who come from oral cultures and those
who wish to maintain discretion in their exploration of Christianity, as they could otherwise be harmed or
ostracized if they were seen visibly reading a hardcover Bible.
The goal is to create and upload fresh, tailor-made programs for incoming refugees to Europe in a
variety of languages, and even to add a collection of videos. They’ll provide biblical counsel on refugee-
specific issues, such as displacement, loneliness, app advertisement, distribution, and organizations
interacting directly with refugees.
In addition to your prayers for us and the ministry we are privileged to serve with you in, would you pray
for open doors with those on the move? Lee & Lonna Lowell Trans World Radio llowell@trw.org
