Basic Bonding and Naming

There are three types of bonds between atoms1. Ionic Bonds

2. Covalent Bonds

3. Metallic Bonds

Ionic

metal and non metal

Calcium Chloride CaCl2 – what does the little 2

mean?

How many chlorides are “stuck” to each

Calcium? What is the FU

FU- formula unit

Smallest piece of an ionic compound

How do we name them?

It used to be that you could name them anything you wanted, like potash K2CO3 or baking soda HaHCO3.

Lavosier, changed that. He wanted it systematic

How do we name them?

1. First kind is a binary compounds

Cation goes first and you use just the regular name like Magnesium, or Lithium.

Next is the Anion

This is the negatively charged part and it gets an (ide) at the end

Like Chloride, Bromide, Nitride

Lets try some

NaCl

CaCl2

Li2Se

CaO

KCl

Naming Covalents

Some atoms need to share electrons. We don’t know how many electrons the atoms are sharing and it changes each time so we name them differently.

Same as ionics but we put prefixes in.

BF3 (this one has an exception)

S2F3

Prefixes are on your sheet
