SPECIAL EVENT……………….. JOIN IN THE FUN AND SUPPORT JAZZ
THE DARYL MCKENZIE JAZZ ENSEMBLE Daina Jowsey - vocals, Daryl McKenzie - Musical Director/ trombone Lachlan Davidson - Saxophone, John Turcio - Piano, Toshi Clinch - Bass, Kieran Rafferty – Drums The Ballarat Jazz Club is very proud and excited to announce that the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Ensemble will be performing for our opening gig for 2020 on Sunday 23rd February. Daryl McKenzie has impressive Jazz C.V. with a long history in performing at the highest level. Daryl is the Music Director of the Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra, but at our Ballarat performance, he is bringing his small-er ensemble. The musician accompanying Daryl are all top musicians, so make sure you book early.
Daryl’s Bio The Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra is an Australian cultural icon, bringing together Melbourne’s most excep-tional instrumentalists to perform original jazz music as well as accompany some of the country’s finest local and international performances across multiple genres and mediums. The DMJO is a hugely important part of Australian music history. The ensemble began in the 1980’s as the Graeme Lyall Orchestra and the Australian Showband. It was in the 1990’s however that the orchestra began to hit its stride as the band for the iconic Australian TV show ‘Hey Hey its Saturday’, under the leadership of musical director, trombonist, composer and arranger Daryl McKenzie. Since this time, the orchestra has con-tinued to diversify and broaden its audience to include the jazz-going public as well as commercial and corpo-rate contexts. The DMJO’s experience with international artists is unparalleled in Australian music. They have backed artists as significant as Tom Jones, Joe Cocker, Barry Manilow, Bonnie Raitt, Tommy Emmanuel and Billy Thorpe.
Just as importantly, they have sustained long working relationships with some of Australia’s finest performers over the past 20 years. Such artists include Wilbur Wilde, Rhonda Burchmore, Grace Knight and Nichaud Fitz-gibbon. They have performed with countless other artists from across the country and the world. They have performed at various jazz festivals, including in the USA and Malaysia, and major Australian events such as the Melbourne and Adelaide Grand Prix. They have also held a 17-year monthly residency at The Apartment/ Paris Cat Jazz Club, performing original Australian jazz compositions, often by band members in-cluding McKenzie, as well as international works.
The DMJO has recorded five critically acclaimed albums of original music, and also rec-orded sections of the soundtracks for iconic Australian films such as Bran Nue Dae, Two Hands and Love and Other Catastrophes. Members of the band under Daryl’s direction have also provided music for TV series Australia’s Got Talent, the Good Friday Appeal and Dancing With The Stars. The DMJO is musically adaptable, able to perform original music, big band works from the standard American repertoire, and arrangements in countless other genres for artists big and small. They perform as an eight—piece band, right up to fifty piece-orchestra if
needed.

Presidents Report Nov 2019
One of the highlights of the year, was the return visit of the Royal Australian Navy Jazz Band, for our
November 17th gig. Apart from band leader Gregory Smith, it was a completely new line-up of musi-
cians this year. The music arrangements, all done by Gregory, were wonderful. Vocalist Stephanie
McCorkelle was professional and interacted with the crowd very well. It is not often you see a lady in
advanced stages of pregnancy performing, I wish her well, when the baby is due in January. All other
members of the band played so very well. Joe Wherrit flew in from Tasmania for the performance,
wow how amazing was he. Gregory Smith’s saxophone playing was such a treat, as were other band
members Martin Duck (Trumpet), Daniel McIllvride (trombone) and Hayden Murtagh (Double Bass)
and Luke Kennedy (Drums). I publicly invited Gregory and the band back in 2020, which he enthusias-
tically accepted, subject to confirmation and checking of other bookings for November 2020.
We are all looking forward to our end of year Christmas function on Sunday 8th December. Ruby Page, Joe Ruberto and
band will be performing, which will add to the Christmas cheer and atmosphere. The music, the food and the camaraderie
will make this day very special. If you phone Marion on 0456 689 123, she will to check to see if there are any
spots available.
The club has been very busy, booking all bands for 2020. We have a great line-up, with five new bands booked and the re-
turn visits from some our more popular bands.

17th May – Ballarat High School – supporting youth in Jazz 16th August - Royal Garden Jazz Band – Classy Trad and Modern Jazz

As previously announced, our club will be participating in the 2020 Begonia Festival Parade, being
held Monday 9th March. We invite you to get involved, to dress in 1920’s costume and follow the
band that will play New Orleans street jazz. Let’s get excited about this, it will be a lot of fun. More
details to follow.
I would like to wish everyone a very merry and safe Christmas and a happy new year. Thanks for your
support in coming to our jazz days throughout the year, I hope you have enjoyed the jazz music as
much as I have. I look forward to seeing you soon. Gerard

A STORY OR TWO…………………… Christmas Jazz
While old Christmas songs and great jazz seem as com-
patible as egg nog and beer, there have been instances
where the planets have aligned to create songs that dis-
play the best of both genres. Eight instances, to be ex-
act, and you'll find them below. Do you agree?
The Christmas Song" by Dexter Gordon From The Panther! (Original Jazz Classics)
Master of the saxophone ballad transforms a holiday pop favorite into a soulful blues improvisation.
"Here Comes Santa Claus" by Ramsey Lewis From Sound Of Christmas (Chess/MCA)
In their prime, Ramsey Lewis and his trio could make anything sound great. Here lies the proof.
"Jingle Bells" by Duke Ellington & His Orchestra From Jingle Bell Swing (Columbia/Legacy)
Classic Duke sound and great choruses played with typical economy from his sidemen circa 1962.
"Skating" by Vince Guaraldi From A Charlie Brown Christmas (Fantasy)
The melody captures the essence of the title in this masterpiece from the uncanny Guaraldi.
"Good Morning Blues" by Ella Fitzgerald From Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (Verve)
A hipster-ish Ella swings the Basie blues in merry 6/8 time.
"What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" by Ella Fitzgerald From Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas (Verve)
No one does this song better. The shyness and longing of Ella's persona are palpable.
"Christmas In New Orleans" by Louis Armstrong with the Benny Carter Orchestra From Hipster's Holiday (Rhino)
Louis recorded a lot of Christmas tunes. This one wins for the combination of Armstrong's obvious love for his sub-
ject and golden trumpet cadenzas.
"O' Tannenbaum" by Vince Guaraldi From A Charlie Brown Christmas (Fantasy)
Guaraldi's elegantly stated theme and sudden shift to 4/4 create yuletide jazz perfection. Is this the most popular
jazz song of all time?
