Editor’s Letter... As I sit
here thinking about what to write, I look out
the conservatory window and the word grim
comes to mind. For inspiration, I check my i
phone for the 7 day weather forecast and
still... grim! Come on Summer, where are
you hiding? This is not fair, quite literally!!
Maybe July will surprise us all, I hope so, we have
some fayres to look forward to including Branton
St Wilfrid’s School fayre, organised by the school
PTA on Saturday 14th July. The fayre attracts many
local community groups so this really is a fayre for
all the community as well as the ‘school family’
please come along for what promises to be a fun
packed day!
Plans for The Auckley Show are well underway and
you will find an application form for a new trial
event—The Fun Dog Show’ If you think your ‘best
friend’ has a chance of charming the judges, then
please completed the entry form and hand it in
asap. You will find full details in the centre page of
this month’s Arrow.
We have 3 pages packed with photographs from
Branton, Auckley and Finningley from the Jubilee
celebrations. It looks like we all entered the spirit
of the occasion and had a good time. At the time
of Print, we were looking forward to the torch
relay in Doncaster. I hope everyone got a chance
to see this historic event.
The deadline for the August issue for advertising and
articles is Wednesday 18th July. The Arrow will be
delivered from Friday 27th July.
Best Wishes

Christian Aid Week
This year we collected £1821.80 of which £660.07
was Gift Aided and if the charity can reclaim 25p
for every £1 given it should add £165 to our total.
A big thank you to all the collectors who we hope
feel well satisfied with their efforts to help those
who have so little. Thank you to everyone who
helped financially through their generous
contributions.

Kilham Hall A wonderful time was had by
approximately ninety children on Tuesday the 5th
June for the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
A special thank you to Martin, of Pure Heaven
discos who entertained the children all afternoon
with games, bouncy castles and music etc. Vicky
for the face painting. The Kilham Hall Committee
for all their hard work, Mike from the Post Office
and his team of BBQ helpers who fed the hordes!
All in all, a very happy afternoon and with free ice
cream, burger and commemorative mug we hope
very happy memories will have been formed for
each child to look back upon when they reach
their senior years! It was a cold afternoon on the
sports field, but tea/coffee and cake helped to keep
the mums and dads warm.
Not to be out done, Kilham Coffee club held their
own Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Tuesday 12th
June from 10.30 to 2 p.m. and just as much fun (if
not more) was had by us all with nearly eighty
people attending. The excellent singing by Sheila
and her friends, the pie and peas meal with trifle to
follow, free raffle and bingo and lovely commemo-
rative biro more than compensated for the small
charge we had to make for the occasion.
Thank you to everyone from the Committee.
Those of you who use Kilham Hall for parties,
bookings, attend Zumba, playgroup, art class, cof-
fee morning, etc, have helped us raise the funds to
subsidise the events as detailed above.
On a less happy note, the photo below shows
recent damage to the Hall due to mindless indi-
viduals. We have to pay for this damage from hard
earned funds you have helped us raise. Should you
see anything untoward, please phone the Police or
if you know who is responsible please tell a com-
mittee member.
Please check the whats on page as we have
some amendments to our timetable.

(opposite side) and adjacent to The Close.
The plans show a development consisting of 90

News From Finningley C of E Primary School Foundation to the Skies..... On Monday 14th May reception class went to the airport to see the mighty Vulcan in all its glory. The 4
and 5 year olds were not really aware of the history of RAF Finningley or the fondness that the people of
the area had for the cold war bomber but after a short while there they soon picked up on how
impressive and important it was. They had a guided tour and talk and then spent their cash in the souvenir
shop. Reception class now has a first rate display of Vulcan memorabilia. The role play corner is now alive
with scramble, scramble and roaring jet engine sounds.
As a follow up the children had a visit from a current Jet2 pilot who talked them through his working day,
showed them his uniform and then let them watch a film of his latest take off and landing from inside the
cockpit. We now have a class full of budding aviators.
SATs are all over!
On Friday 18th May School hosted its annual ‘thank goodness SATs have gone disco with games, music and
food. Pupils had the chance to relax and put behind them the whole test week. Now on to summer and
hopefully some sunshine.
A Very Berry Breakfast Mrs Diane Roxby and Ms Sarah Linley organised a super
fun breakfast club on the 18th May with a themed eat
healthy morning. The whole session was about eating
fruit, living healthily and keeping fit. Over 30 pupils
attended to play games about 5 a day, make a try fruit
smoothies and fun cocktails and generally have wonderful
fun. The ladies in charge sorted out activities such as blind
berry and cracking food clue trial. The children said they
loved the Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries but
were not too sure about the cranberries! Aside from the
impressive mess in the kitchen area the children came
away with some really positive attitudes to healthy food!
BMX stunts
Keelan Phillips , the current UK BMX
stunt champion, was in school on the morning of 28th May as a reward for
our winning the Big Pedal.
He gave two shows with key stage one and two children and they were
all amazed by his skill, balance and bravery. Miss Waszak was also very
brave when she had a go at riding without hands as part of a staff
challenge (strange how Mr Hall disappeared at this time.....).
The older pupils then got a chance to try some stunts of their own,
supervised by Keehan. A great morning.
Dollars Bake In the last week of May all our children
had the chance to spend their dollars in
dollars shop. Children at Finningley don’t
get stars or stickers. They get dollars for
attending, working hard or being kind and
as they add those dollars up they can buy
treats. These range from sllnkies and glid-
ers right up to being the head teacher for
a day or baking with Mrs Stevenson. Two
of our year 4/5 budding bakers made deli-
cious cup cakes and then shared them
with the staff. Splendid.
Jubilee Fun On the last day of the half term we had a
super Jubilee party in school with Mrs
Robinson, our cook, putting on a fantastic
buffet lunch and children then contributing
to a ‘street party’ cake and bun feed in the
afternoon. We had fun all day trying out
1950’s games such as shove ha’penny and
hoola hoop challenge and children made
splendid crowns to celebrate the day. We
really wanted to celebrate in style.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School As part of our topic about the
seaside, class 1 went to The
Deep to find out about animals
that live under the water. Our
workshop session was called
‘Lost at Sea’ where we had to
find out where different crea-
tures lived. Below is Aimee’s
recount of our school trip:
‘On Tuesday 29th of May we
went to The Deep on a school
trip. First we went to a workshop
and we were looking at sea
creatures that are lost at sea. We
had to put them in the right
homes. Next we went to look at
the fish and I saw a big sword-
fish. After that we went outside to
have our lunch and we sat on
some benches attached to a
table. Finally we all went into the
gift shop and I got a spring with
an octopus and a turtle on it. I
got a ball with a turtle inside and
a pencil with a seal on it and a
rubber at the end. I had a fantas-
tic time at The Deep. My favour-
ite bit was in the workshop.’
Aimee
We all had a great day and
enjoyed looking round The
Deep.
Royal Diamond Jubilee Day
Celebrations
We had a lovely celebration
day in school on the last Friday
before half-term. The children
looked absolutely fantastic in their costumes. We had a fabulous range of Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses
and red, white and blue themes. Many parents and grandparents joined us for morning assembly, where we
learned different facts about the Queen and sang a stirring rendition of the National Anthem whilst waving our
Union Jack flags! This was followed by our catwalk parade to show-off the wonderful costumes. At lunchtime the
hall was suitably decorated, and tables set with cloths and place cards, each depicting a royal palace. The children
enjoyed a picnic style meal, with the whole school and staff eating together. During the course of the day each
class completed art and sports activities, all with a royal theme. Our wonderful P.T.A. organised photographers
to be in school throughout the day and over 1,000 photos were taken! These will be used to make a Jubilee
Celebration booklet depicting a day in the history of Branton St. Wilfrid’s. To complete the day the children
were each given a commemorative crown, engraved with the school name, and a Union Jack.
Croc-o-mile Day
Our wonderful P.T.A. organised this sponsored event, where the children walk four times around the perimeter
of the school to complete their Croc-o-mile. They were accompanied by their teachers and a very friendly
crocodile!. The event is set to raise well over £1,000 which will be used to fund exciting equipment and visitors
into school. Children received crocodile themed rewards for their sponsorship and the class who raised the
most money, which was Reception Class, received £50 to spend in their classroom.
Class 1 Visit
to The Deep
To advertise please call 07795 387937 or 01302 534256 29
Straight after half term, Class 6 went on their residential visit to Marrick Priory in the Yorkshire Dales! They
spent a fantastic week there, and took part in a wide range of activities. When they arrived, they did an
orienteering challenge and then completed a range of team-building and initiative exercises, some of which
proved extremely tricky!
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the children took part in 4 different activities. They completed a High Ropes
course and jumped off the terrifying Leap of Faith. They worked their way through a Low Ropes course, where
they scrambled over nets, crawled through tiny tunnels and balanced on beams. Climbing on the rock wall
proved an extremely popular activity, and all of the children enjoyed canoeing (and got wet through!). On
Thursday, they went on a 7-mile walk in the beautiful countryside surrounding the Priory, visiting Grinton Smelt
Mills.
The children came home on Friday exhausted but happy, having enjoyed a busy and sometimes challenging week.
They returned to school feeling more confident and proud of what they had achieved during a brilliant week at
Marrick.
Hayfield Pyramid Rounder's Tournament On Wednesday 30th May, we took our Year 6 mixed Rounder's team to Hayfield School to play in the pyramid
tournament. We played 3 games in total and scored a total of 18 and a half rounder's. We won the tournament!
We look forward to taking our team to Kirk Sandall on Wednesday 27 th June to play in the Year 6 mixed
Rounder's tournament against other Doncaster schools.
Kirk Sandall Rounder's Skills On Wednesday 13th June, we took our Year 5 boys Rounder's team to Kirk Sandall to play in a Skills competition
with different schools from Doncaster. The skills included bowling, batting, throwing, catching and running. We
came 4th place of this tournament, having achieved the best score for bowling overall.
A special thanks go to all the parents who helped with transport to and from these events and for their support.
A big thank you, also, to Mrs Chorlton for helping us to coach our teams on a Tuesday night.
These are great achievements and we are all very proud of their success. Well done to you all.
We hope you enjoyed reading about all our activities this month. We will share more of our news in the next
edition.
Best Wishes,
C.Barnes,

Diamond Jubilee at Hayfield Lane Primary School
As a school we felt that it was important that we celebrated this unique occasion and
ensured that the children understood the importance of the event. We therefore decided
that the week beginning 28th May was Jubilee Week. We had many things planned for the
week including decorating bunting, a coffee morning and a Garden Party. Each class planned
some exciting activities for the week:
Nursery children played games like ’Balancing a crown on a cushion’ race and ‘Pin the tail on the Corgi’.
They built Castles and Palaces with building blocks and decorated Crowns. They also dressed up as Kings
and Queens and sat on a Throne!
Foundation 2 children decorated plates with pictures of Queen Elizabeth II and things that reminded
them of her such as the Royal Family, the Queen’s royal residences and her Corgis. They also found out
lots of interesting facts about the Queen’s reign.
Year 1 had a fantastic time celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They designed a special outfit for
the Queen to wear, thought about what rules we would make if we were royal and made cakes. They
found out lots of things!
Year 2 designed and made a commemorative plate. They also researched information on the Queen and
imagined what it would be like to rule our Country. They did creative activities based on the Queen and
made a class collage titles ‘A Crowd of Queens’.
Year 3 were discovering the Royal Family. They created a Royal Family Tree and also made a timeline
storyboard about Queen Elizabeth II. They thought about when she became Queen of England and when
she celebrated her other Jubilees. Finally they made a poster to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee.
Year 4 found out lots of facts about the Queen, her life and duties. Using this information they made a
fact file about the Queen. Additionally, they made a patchwork quilt where each pair of children made
their own design relating to the Diamond Jubilee.
Year 5 have been answering the question; ‘Why is The Queen Cool?’ They learnt about how she became
The Queen and what her day to day life involves. They couldn’t believe how busy each day is. They
looked at each decade of her reign, found out about the important events that have happened and have
learnt about the importance of The Commonwealth. They found it really interesting and their idea that
The Queen was just a little old lady who liked knitting (!!) has changed completely. They now have a lot of
respect for everything she has achieved during her reign.
Year 6 were given the task to research every aspect of the Queen’s life from when she was a little girl to
marrying Prince Philip and having her children to her role in the Commonwealth, her public duties and her
time as the Queen. They presented all of this information in their own presentation of ‘This Is Your Life’
in an assembly to parents and the rest of the school.
The Coffee Morning was a huge success, Parents donated cakes and our Parent Forum volunteered to
help out. People from the local community were invited as well as parents and carers. Our Parent Forum
members suggested that we could raise money for “Help for Heroes”. We also sold “Help for Heroes”
wristbands and held a raffle. We achieved to raise the grand total of £500 for which we are very proud of.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated cakes, helped out on the day and
those who attended this worthwhile Charity event.
Garden Party We held a Garden Party on the afternoon of Friday 1st June. For which the children were
encouraged to come to school that day dressed in very smart clothes, as princes and princesses or just to
have a red, white and blue theme. Staff decided that they would treat the children as Royalty for the
afternoon and dressed as servants. We chose a Queen and a Prince Philip for the afternoon and had a
variety of games and activities including ‘Make a Crown’, ‘Guess Who’, ‘Pin the tail on the Corgi’, Musical
chairs, Croquet and some very enthusiastic dancing to music from sixty years ago up to more modern
times. After all these activities the children were ready for sandwiches, cakes and a drink. We finished the
afternoon by presenting prizes for best bunting and sang The National Anthem to parents.
As well as our memories of the week, the school presented every child from our school with a very
special memento of a Diamond Jubilee Mug and Jubilee Bookmark. We hope you enjoy a few of the many
photographs we took over the week.

Running Out Of Wine
There’s a couple who have just got married, and they’re at their wedding reception. The man is around sixty, and
the woman around fifty. It’s been a busy day and so they’re making the most of a quiet moment alone, when all
of a sudden a beautiful little silver-winged fairy appears.
She says: “For being such an exceptional couple and loving each other to bits, I will grant you each a wish.”
The bride says: “I would love to travel around the world on a long cruise with my wonderful husband.” The fairy
waves her magic wand and – presto! – two tickets for the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship appear in the bride’s
hands.
The fairy then turns to the husband, who thinks for a moment and says: “Sorry, darling, but I wish you were
forty years younger than me.”
The bride and the fairy are very disappointed, but a promise is a promise and a wish a wish, so the fairy waves
her magic wand and – presto! – the husband is suddenly ninety years old!
Now we’re in July the wedding season is in full flow. There are a number of popular Bible readings at weddings,
and recently we had the Wedding at Cana. The wine runs out, so Jesus turns water into the best wine, and this
got me thinking about things running out.
The point of the story wasn’t about the wine, instead this was a sign. A sign of what we may ask. Well, look what
happens.
wine runs out. And that’s life. One way or another, the wine always runs out. Whatever the gains, life inevitably
entails losses. We grow up and old. Children lose their
innocence. Parents see their kids leave home. If we’re lucky
enough never to become unemployed, still, one day we will
have to retire. Our bodies all start to head south as we lose
the battle with gravity (however much gym-time!), while men
lose hair where they want it and gain it where they don’t.
Aches and pains become more frequent. And no one gets out
of here alive. The wine always runs out. Add all the
technology you like, human resources come to an end. That’s
the bad news.
But as a Christian I believe there is amazing good news - the
resources of God never run out.
New energy springing out of weariness, new opportunities
emerging from failure, and new hope arises even in the ashes
of doubt and despair. No one lives a life without encountering
times when the human resources run out. The encouraging
news is that God’s never do and he’s always willing to share
them.
Blessings
