HUNTSVILLE NATURE CLUB

One legacy of what most will remember as a very wet sum-mer has been the exceptional fall colour. Warm early September temperatures combined with good soil moisture appear to have con-tributed to a slower-than-normal onset of leaf colour change. In the past, these conditions have often produced very bright maple leaf colour, and this year appears

to have been the same. Excellent leaf colour persisted into October throughout Muskoka and Algon-quin Park.

At the Oct. 26 meeting of the Huntsville Nature Club, retired Algonquin Park Naturalist Ron Tozer will present an illustrated talk concerning major changes in the birdlife of Algonquin Park over the last 50 years. The informa-tion discussed will appear in his book The Birds of Algonquin Park, expected to be published in 2011.

There have been significant

changes in the species composi-tion and number of birds present in Algonquin Park, and probable contributing causes will be noted in this talk. Some factors are wide-spread, such as loss of habitat in breeding, migration and winter-ing areas. Others are Algonquin-specfic, such as habitat change due to modern selection logging, which has replaced earlier cutting methods; almost total fire sup-pression; and natural forest matu-ration through succession.

Climate warming has nega-

tively affected some birds such as the Gray Jay, and influenced the spring arrival and fall departure times of many park species. There have been widespread declines in the numbers of birds that feed on insects in the air throughout eastern North America, including Algonquin Park.

While many changes have resulted in reductions in bird num-bers, there have been some dra-matic increases during the period as well, in birds such as Canada Goose, Turkey Vulture, Merlin and

Wild Turkey. All these topics and others will be explored in this pre-sentation. The Huntsville Nature Club meets on the last Monday of every month at Club 55 in the town hall at 7 p.m. and guests are always welcome. A voluntary $2 donation is appreciated.

For more information regard-ing the Huntsville Nature Club contact Ken Morrison (789-1407) or Rick Stronks (635-3315). Inter-ested in becoming a member? Sin-gle membership is only $15, and a family membership is $25.
