Maureen's Haven
YappY Hour
The annual Maureen’s Haven Lobster Bash fundraiser took place on August 22 at Dockers Waterside in East Quogue. Among the several hundred friends of Maureen’s Haven attending the event were this year’s honorary chairs, renowned television actress Susan Lucci and her son, Andreas Huber, entrepreneur and founder of Locality Media. Celebrating its 11th anniversary, Maureen’s Haven provides shelter, meals, and vocational and educational training to homeless adults and families throughout the North and South forks.
There were surfers, beachcombers, luau and bikini clad babes and yes, even seaweed, at Yappy Hour on August 24. These dogs sure know how to dress up for a beach themed party. The Southampton Animal Shelter and Southampton Historical Museum held the event on the grounds of the Rogers Mansion. The costumed contestants were paraded among guests and their pooches as it was BYOD (bring your own dog). The judges were Marianne and Mayor Mark Epley. Prizes for best costume were from Little Lucys and One Stop Pet Shop.

Coming Soon
Riddick (R ) Vin Diesel is back for a third installment as the legendary anti-hero, and it’s another satisfying dose of all things violent. David Twohy, the writer and director, knows how to plot enough twists and turns to keep us occupied between the scenes of wanton slaughter, and Diesel was born to play the role. Go back and watch the others first, and then by all means catch this one in the theater.
New To Theaters
Winnie (R ) This biopic of Winnie Mandela was envisioned as a star vehicle for Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Unfortunately, it became apparent to critics, and everyone involved, that this baby was DOA – it’s a certified bomb already and it hasn’t even been released yet. Terrence Howard, an Academy Award nominee, plays Nelson Mandela.

Kon -Tik i Thor Heyerdah l ’s riveting account of sailing from South America to Polynesia comes alive courtesy of directors Max Manus, Espen Sanberg, and Joachim Rønning. Pål Sverre Hagen plays the author, whose unpublished book about the early migration to Polynesia was scoffed at because it was so unbelievable. Angered by the rejection, Heyerdahl builds his own
raft and retraces the journey himself. Hollywood takes certain liberties — sharks and whatnot. But hey, it’s a movie. Enjoy.
Now PlayingDrinking Buddies (R) Kate
(Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake M. Johnson) work together in a Chicago brewery. Both are in “meaningful” relationships. But they flirt, and they drink a lot together. You can take it from there. It’s Joe Swanberg’s baby – he wrote it and directed it – and he keeps it together. The cast, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston among them, bring their “A” game. Try it.
Passion (R) Brian De Palma has assembled a stunning cast to play out this suspense thriller about two women locked in an international power struggle. Rachel McAdams (Midnight In Paris) and Noomi Rapace do their best, but the truth is
the original film was much better – this one is too much De Palma and not nearly enough subtlety.
Lee Daniels’ The Butler (PG-13) As was the case with Precious, Daniels’ unabashedly directs with one eye on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. In other words, he’s pandering for Oscar nominations, and it hurts his work. Fortunately, Forest Whitaker rescues some heavy-handed direction with an extraordinary performance that somehow cuts through the self-righteousness that runs rampant through this film. If you don’t know by now, it’s about a White House butler who served eight American presidents. The script is short on historical facts and long on pap but the cast is superb, even Robin Williams playing Ike. Watch for Jane Fonda channeling Nancy Reagan. Yes, there will be Oscar nominations – this kind of Hollywood liberal schlockfest always manages to find an all-too winning champion.
Deadline for submissions is Thursday at noon. Email to Jessica@indyeastend.com.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Why not spend some time at home and with those you love? It’s an excellent time to indulge your support systems. Seek out those who support you and know that it is okay to take a break from being the major emotional support for everyone around you.
TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21)
Energy dedicated to achieving something in the world, something tangible, is best served this week. See what you can bring reality to what has just been an idea up until now. Make it real.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Take
a moment and renew your strength. Alone time is rewarded with a sense of renewal and the energy to see things through. I know you love all the distractions, but take some time by yourself and see how different you feel.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Your
life right now is truly pregnant with the possibilities. Make some lists and know that the energy will be available for you to take action. Make a good list and birth all those ideas.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You can have peace of mind right now. All those things that seem heavy on your mind, know that you can set them down and trust where you are and where you are going. Seek peace; it is here for you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Find those things that move you. This week your mind will bump into your feelings and this will be the best time to catch that wave of emotion and feel what does indeed move you. Then take action.
LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Doing
the happy dance? You may need to take a deep breath and feel where you are and know that you have everything you need right now to be happy. In many ways, it is a choice for you to make. Are you feeling the possibility of being happy?
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) All
paths lead to Rome this week. No, really. Trust where you are being led and trust that this is the path to your goals and there is no one horrible choice you can make that will screw everything up and no one can bump you off the path. Trust the journey.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Bring your feelings to the forefront. It will not be about what makes sense or is rational, at least not this week. It will be all about how things feel and what feels right. That will be your next best choice, the thing that feels right.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) If you get all serious about things, which is such a Capricorn default position, this will be a sign that you may need to lighten up and look at things differently. Don’t allow your ego to lead the show, check in with yourself and see if you can put the ego aside and smile.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19)
Magical week this week as you continue to communicate your ideas and allow others to understand where you are coming from. Your ideas are extraordinary as is the way you are seeing things, so share them with everyone!
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You
must stay engaged. Not a time to sit on the sidelines and allow others to
just take over and run the show. Your feelings and what moves you must be encouraged and you must take action on them. Following what moves you is the best choice wherever it leads. Trust your inner world.
NOTE: If you were born at the
end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before and after your birthday.

Today’s Birthday: Anthony Weiner, 1964
It’s hard to believe someone this immature is almost 50, but Anthony Weiner is approaching that milestone birthday.
He was elected to the New York City Council at the age of 28. By the time Weiner was 35, the newly elected U.S. Congressman seemed to have the political world on a string – and he had that
ambition to match. Weiner ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of New York City before pulling
out of the race and reportedly mulled a run for the U.S. Senate. He was considered an up and coming Democrat who was destined for higher office.
He married Huma Abedin in 2010 with President Bill Clinton officiating – Abedin was a high profile aide of Hillary Clinton’s and ambitious in her own right. The couple had a son, Jordan, and the sky seemed the limit for this power couple – until Weiner’s little problem was revealed.
He was sending texts of himself -- revealing pictures -- to women all over the country, many of them much younger than he. The pictures were graphic, and the copy that accompanied them steamy, suggestive, and racy.
Weiner couldn’t stem the tide of bad publicity and quit the House. However, he resurfaced this year, and became the frontrunner in the race to be the next mayor of New York City until -- oops – his little problem surfaced again. Another series of Weiner “bulge” pics that had been sent to women became public, necessitating a hastily called press conference, with the ever-suffering Huma by his side. There will be more, he admitted.
Weiner’s stock plummeted, but as of this writing he is still a candidate for mayor.
