Why is the Offside Law Unique?
• The Offside Law is the only law that restricts tactical positioning during dynamic play.
• Over time, the Offside Law has evolved to increase the flow of the attacking game and limit trifling stoppages.

Elements of Offside Infringement

2. Time of Judgment
3. Active Involvement
All elements must be present, or else there is no infringement.

Offside Position
A player is in an offside position if he is:
• In the opponents’ half of the field, and
• Closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball, and
• Closer to the opponents’ goal line than the second-last opponent.
All three elements are required for offside position.10/17/2013

Offside Position
• It is not an offense to be in an offside position.
• A player in offside position cannot participate:
Cannot interfere with play
Cannot interfere with any opponent
Is therefore temporarily “off his team” (“off his side”)

Time of Judgment
Offside position (of a player) is judged at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team.

Active Involvement
A player may be involved in active play by
– Interfering with play, or
– Interfering with an opponent, or
– Gaining advantage by being in an offside position

Offside Infringement
An offside infringement has occurred whenA player in offside positionAt the time of judgmentBecomes actively involved in the play.
An indirect free kick is then awarded to the opponents at the place where the infringement occurred,
That is, the offside position at the time of judgment.
