Genome sequencing of normal cells reveals developmental lineages and mutational processes.
In this paper Sam devised and employed a novel method to reconstruct embryology and to study mutational process in normal cells, using whole genome sequences of single cell clones. The paper was awarded the Donald Paterson Prize of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, a prize awarded for the best scientific articles written by a pre-Consultant paediatrician.

An evaluation of multimodal spinal cord monitoring in scoliosis surgery: a single centre experience of 354 operations.
The paper’s aims were to show that multimodal neuromonitoring can effectively prevent neurological complications in spinal deformity surgery, for which there were loose national guidelines but no current consensus opinion. This research shows high sensitivity and specificity for its use, and that it should be the gold standard in deformity surgery. This is reliant on an experienced and dedicated team structure.

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Analysis of 533 Adult Patients Who Underwent Transplantation at King’s College Hospital.
AIHA is a poorly characterised post-transplant complication, with no consensus on optimal treatment. Limited case series and small retrospective studies indicate that post-transplant AIHA can be very aggressive and resistant to treatment.
To better understand the risk factors, prognosis and management of post-transplant AIHA, Meng carried out a retrospective analysis of 533 adult patients that underwent bone marrow transplants at King’s College Hospital.

Organisational learning and In-situ simulation: A theory put into practice.
The project was developed to promote the culture of organisational learning in the Intensive care unit (ITU). It involves creating a safe learning environment at work. This was possible only by engaging all the individuals in the ITU and bringing them together in improving education, team working and the environment. In-situ simulation was a theoretically ideal tool but has not been used previously for this purpose.

CT2 Anaesthetics, Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Use of the National Hip Fracture Database for Quality Improvement in Anaesthesia for Hip Fracture Patients.
The aim of this quality improvement project was to implement the recommendations of the Anaesthetic Sprint Audit of Practice 2013 in order to give hip fracture patients the best care possible. The project showed very good results - quickly reaching its target rate for spinal anaesthetics, showing that interventions do not need to consume many resources to be effective.

Standardised storage of venepuncture and cannulation equipment: Can it deliver efficiency savings and improve patient care?
This project is based on a problem identified by junior doctors working in a surgical department. It has demonstrated that the use of a standardised storage of equipment needed for basic, commonly performed ward-based tasks improves efficiency and patient care. Through collaborative working with departmental clinicians and managers, the outcome of the project has resulted in changes in the targeted wards.

Daniela has shown excellence in leadership both nationally and internationally throughout 2014-2015. She single-handedly organised and chaired the Human Spaceflight Panel at the Royal Aeronautical Society President’s Conference. Daniela brought a maturity and innovative thinking far beyond that expected for her years or level of training and there are very few that could have performed to such a high standard in the rapidly evolving specialty of Aerospace Medicine.
