Direct Quotes & Paraphrasing

When is it appropriate to quote a source directly and when is it

appropriate to paraphrase?

Use a direct quote when...o The author has insightful phrasing or a

brief description of an idea that you want to use word-for-word

Write a paraphrase to...o Improve the quality of your paper

by explaining another person’s thoughts in your own writing style, improving the flow and readability

Direct Quotes & Paraphrasing

Make sure to put direct quotes in quotation marks! Unless the quote runs on for 4+ lines, then

use a block quote.

Either way, cite your sources!

Effectively ParaphrasingParaphrasing is explaining another person's

thoughts in your own words.

Tips when paraphrasing:

• Make a short list of the quote’s main ideas and important words

• Use these ideas and synonyms for these words in your paraphrase

• Add a citation or reference

Make sure that the paraphrase is in your own writing style, not like the

author’s or anyone else’s!
