After an impressive win overIrene on Monday night,Vermillion’s 15-16 Teenerswere poised to move to withinfive games of the Region 1Achampionship with a win overLennox Tuesday night.

But against the Lennox teamthey had defeated handily twiceduring the regular season,Vermillion’s Teeners sustainedan ugly 16-10 loss that wasn’tthat close and sank into thelosers’ bracket. That meantthat, starting Wednesday night,Vermillion would have to winWednesday night, Thursdaynight, Friday night andSaturday afternoon to take theregional title instead of needingjust five wins to get thechampionship.

The lights on four of theeight towers at the Lennoxballpark went out in thebottom of the second inning, but in reality the lights wentout for Vermillion in thebottom of the first.

Staked to an early 2-0 lead, starter Jacob Odens faced eightbatters and didn’t get any ofthem out. Reliever PeterHaught faced eight more beforethe first inning finally ended, and Lennox had a 10-2 lead. That half inning included fivehits, one scoring error to goalong with a couple mental

errors, five walks and three hitbatters.

To Haught’s credit, he gaveVermillion a chance to rally byholding Lennox scoreless in thesecond, third and fourthinnings. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second butstruck out the side in the thirdand faced only three batters inthe fourth.

Meanwhile, Vermillionpecked away at its eight-rundeficit, getting one in thesecond, two runs in the thirdand one in the fifth to close towithin 10-6.

Regan Bye relieved Haughtto start the bottom of the fifth. He walked the first two battershe faced and hit the third witha pitch but escaped thatimpossible situation withoutany runs scoring, thanks inlarge part to striking out thelast two Lennox batters of theinning.

Vermillion got another runin the top of the seventh andwas within 10-7.

It wasn’t because they werewhacking the ball off Lennoxhurler Derek DeVries that theTeeners were able to cut intothe big lead. DeVries and histeammates gave Vermillion tworuns on errors and another ona wild pitch. Ty Iverson andHaught did come through withRBI hits that helped the rally.

But, if it hadn’t been lostearlier, the game was lost in the

bottom of the sixth. Bye walkedfive batters and threw four wildpitches. They and a costlyinfield error opened the floodgates. Then a pair of Lennoxbatters joined the party withRBI hits. Lennox tallied sixruns to take a 16-7 lead.

What made that inning allthe more deadly was that —wouldn’t you know! — in thetop of the seventh Vermillionscored three times, two of theruns coming on Seth Heine’shome run and the other on ahit by Seth Miller. Had it notbeen for the six-run sixth byLennox, those three runswould have tied the game at10-10.

DeVries pitched the entireseven innings. He gaveVermillion only four hitsthrough the first six innings, then four more in the seventhwhen it didn’t matter. He struckout five and walked four. Thethree Vermillion pitcherswalked 13. And for all itsscoring, Lennox still stranded10 other runners on base.

Jordan Harrington had fiveRBIs for Lennox and DelaneHood two.

The loss left Vermillion’srecord at 27-17 heading intoWednesday’s losers’ bracketplay.

Meanwhile, Red Sox hurlerNate Olsen kept the Tappers incheck all night. Yankton didn’t havea hit off Olsen until Jared Millerlaunched a home run over theright-field wall in the fifth inning. The Tappers loaded the bases withtwo out in that inning in anattempt to cut even more into a 5-1

Vermillion lead, but JasonLivermont’s line drive was caughtjust above ground level by second-baseman A.J. Staiert to end therally.

Yankton was no threat after thatas the Red Sox scored two in thefifth on RBI doubles by CodyAughton and Dan Hansen.

The game-ending outburst inthe seventh was ignited by ReeseSteckler’s single. Following aninfield error, Aughton’s buntbasehit was played into a costlytwo-base error. Hansen’s doubleand Robin Chute’s single finished itoff.

Miller had Yankton’s only twohits off Olsen. Tapper starter TreyKrier surrendered the first sevenSox runs to take the loss.
