To our Temple Israel Family
It’s back to school time! Thanks to all who have contributed in getting our classrooms and other areas of the shul cleared and cleaned for the upcoming school year. If we are getting ready for school, it also means that we are getting ready to prepare for the High Holidays (HH). One of the privileges
of being President is that I am quite a bit closer to the pulse of daily activity and back office goings on at Temple Israel. I can share with all of you, without hesitation, that there is a huge effort happening behind the scenes to prepare for these New Year events. Let me give you just a few examples of what may not be so visible to you:
Our staff in the office, under the leadership of Léa Ahlers and the support of John-Patrick Alexander, supports ALL of this ongoing activity, tirelessly and with a smile on their faces; the MAGAL Committee, led by our VP of Education, Kris Crane, works in partnership with our friends at Temple Shir Shalom to prepare for the upcoming school year; our Ritual Commit-tee, Chaired by Michael Fineberg, diligently prepares all the HH honors (thank you Robin Katzman and team- what a monu-mental task this is!); Joe Ihns gets us spruced up for both start of school and HH as Chair of Building & Grounds; Dick Katz makes sure we are well protected as head of Safety & Secu-rity; Geanne Share, our Comptroller, works with our Book-keeper, Robert Behr, and the office to make sure we properly bill and collect during this most important funding season; and of course Rabbi Joshua Neely and Debbie Meitin are diligently preparing to lead services with countless others that are too numerous to include here. THANKS to all of you and the many others that I am sure I have left out for helping us prepare for the next cycle of joyous academic and spiritual celebration at Temple Israel!
I would be remiss if I did not join virtually every other Jewish (and arts) organization in Central Florida and remember the iconic Harriett Lake, who passed away at age 96 after a long life of astonishingly good deeds and generosity towards our community. While she was not as frequently seen in the last few years, all of us who knew her will have a beautiful and col-orful vision of her as a permanent fashion statement and a personality that was as large as her generosity. Among many other contributions at TI is her namesake playground and kitchen. We will miss her dearly!
Finally, I would like to recognize our two August B’nai Mitz-vah: Will Berg and Ilana Brener - a hearty Mazel Tov to both of you!

Rosh HaShanah is not the
beginning of the year. Or,
more accurately, it isn’t
the only beginning of the
year. Yes, it is when the
number flips over on the
calendar, but in every
other sense it is the beginning of the end of the
year’s spiritual cycle. What began in spring with
the rebirth of Pesach is now coming to a close. We
were taken from winter’s bondage and Egyptian
slavery to freedom. That freedom needed direc-
tion and purpose or else it would dissolve in the
desert. This led to Mount Sinai and the giving of
Torah. This is marked by Shavuot which also marks
the gateway to summer and summer harvests.
This period of the year was always the most in-
tense as we struggled to reap enough to last us
the rest of the year as new crops grew.
As the harvest slows to a trickle we prepare to do
an inventory. Have our efforts of the past year
been enough to last us through winter? Is there
anything we should do differently to increase our
harvest next year? Are there walls to be fixed,
barns to be raised, and animals to be culled? What
have we learned from our toil in the fields? Once
we have answers to these questions, we can re-
joice at Sukkot and eat the fruits of our labors.

calendars now!
USY (grades 9-12) – Sunday, August 19 from 12:30-3pm will be a Murder Mystery event, brought to you by our newly elected TI-
USY President Lily Morgan and her crew.
Kadima (grades 6-8) – Parents, please plan to join us for a short parent information meeting on the first day of religious school,
Sunday, August 19. Our first event for the year will be Ice Cream and Ice Breakers after school on Sunday, September 16 from

All groups are open to all Jewish kids in the area. Synagogue membership is not required. Youth membership forms are on our website. For more information about our youth programs, contact Kris Crane at elijah1298@aol.com.
Community-Wide Jewish Teen Retreat
The Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando and its JTEN Educators (Rabbi Neely included) has collaborated with local synagogues
for a teen retreat August 6 & 7 in Sorrento. All Jewish teens entering grades 8-12 in the entire Orlando area are invited, regardless
of synagogue or youth group affiliation. Some of our Temple Israel teens are looking forward to attending – we’ll report back to
you next month!
We are looking forward to another fun and engaging year of learning. Registration forms were due August 1, but if you’re late, you can catch up by registering online through the Tem-ple Israel website.
Wednesday, August 15, is our Teacher Meet & Greet Night. Drop by anytime between 5-7pm
and chat with your teacher. Sunday, August 19 is our first day of school. Parents, please plan
to stay this first day of school. Our school Principals Rabbi Neely and Cantor Kim have ar-
ranged for a parent meeting as well as family learning time. And, lucky for us late risers, our membership committee is
so graciously providing the parents with bagels and coffee this first day. Yay!
While we wait for school to resume, there’s no need to wait to see your friends. Join us for services Friday evening or
Saturday morning and freshen up on your Hebrew skills and prayers with our congregation!
Upcoming Dates – Please mark your calendars for the following dates:
Wednesday, August 15 – Meet & Greet Teacher Night 5-7pm
Sunday, August 19 – 1st Day of Religious School 9am-12:30pm

and stories at our monthly Tot Shabbat program.
Tot Shabbat - our next Tot Shabbat will be on Satur-

our Kindergarten Classroom #1. Tot Shabbat is a joy-
ful and engaging program geared toward families
with young children, ages 5 and under (older siblings
are welcome, too).
The 45 minute program includes Shabbat themed
songs, dancing, stories, simple blessings, and a snack.
Bring your friends and meet other families with small
children as we celebrate Shabbat with the youngest
members of our community.
All are welcome and temple membership is not re-
quired. Afterwards, stay and join our entire congrega-
tion for our Shabbat Kiddush Luncheon.

Rosh HaShanah and
Yom Kippur, which have
no agricultural compo-
nent, ask us to do the
same sort of spiritual
accounting, a cheshbon nefesh. Even as we
count our sacks of flour and barrels of olives
we also have to take stock of our character
and behavior and whether they will sustain us
into the future. Have we allowed our walls of
self-discipline to erode over the year? Are we
less patient with others? Have we picked up
any bad habits or tendencies that need to be
cut out of our lives? Are we less regular in at-
tending services, giving to tzedakah or spend-
ing time learning from the wisdom of our peo-
ple? Have we properly celebrated or taken
pride in our righteous accomplishments just as
we would our material acquisitions? Are we
doing enough to build strong connections
within our Jewish community and contributing
to the world around us?
Use this month of Elul, and the holidays of
Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur, to take a
deep dive into yourself. Recognize all that is
good and noble and virtuous and embrace it.
Ferret out the flaws and mistakes and know
that you can fix them. These days are not just
days off of work, but days given over to the
most important work of all.

Immeasurable impact on our community and more to come this year!
Starting in September, MAGAL will continue collecting non-perishable food items for JFS Or-
lando's Pearlman Emergency Food Pantry. We will notify students and parents about the dif-
ferent collection theme each month.
As we did last year, MAGAL will be collecting supplies for the ContinuED School Supply Drive,
a partnership between Young Friends of 90.7 WMFE and A Gift for Teaching that provides vi-
tal supplies to Central Florida students. The need for supplies doesn’t cease after the school
year begins, so the drive doesn’t stop in August. We will collect the following most-needed
supplies starting on the first day of religious school (August 19) and on Sundays throughout
the school year:
packs of No. 2 pencils
8 or 10-count packs of washable markers
packs of pocket folders
packs of loose-leaf paper
24-count crayon packs
hand sanitizer

RECOGNIZING DECEPTION
- Bill Kahn
I thought Temple readers might be interested in my video series, since lying seems to have
become the norm for many people. Unfortunately, what they say can significantly affect
one’s life. Consequently, I have put together a five-part video series on how to detect people
who are lying, by analyzing the statements they make, how they use words and what their
face and body reveal.
In YouTube’s search bar, enter the words “Recognizing Deception Series” and then search for
it, or directly by using the link below.

known as La Piccola Gerusalemme or Little Israel.
Here we see the Shares in a synagogue built in the
late 1500s, restructured late 1700s, and again late
1900s.
