Empowering women through service and advocacy
The Ann Horrocks Science & Technology Award has been signed off by your Board and the application process will kick off in the middle of August…. On the awards front I had the pleasure of attending the Latrobe University (Bendigo campus) Awards Ceremony with Sue Clarke & Kathy Wilton last week present-ing our Jane M Klausman & Heather Winderlich scholarships. We will acknowledge all our scholarship winners with an award ceremony later in the year. Can I ask that you please take note of the club calendar…. The next few months will be busy and we will require lots of help with rosters etc. As always I will close with an some words of wisdom – “Advocacy:- to change “What is” into “What should be”…… Anon
In Zonta fellowship…
Kathryn
Hello every-one…. ADVOCACY....... It’s an important part of what we do as Zontians. What is advocacy? Advocacy is the expression of support for, or opposition to, a cause, argument or proposal. Advocacy actions may include influencing laws, legislation or attitudes. What is Zonta advocacy? Zonta advocacy is an action taken in “the public interest” or for “the greater good” with respect to empowering women and girls and their human rights. With these things in mind as the Zonta year progresses we will aim to not only continue, but build upon our Advocacy efforts. Our Service and Advocacy com-mittee is hard at work, with lots of new ideas and possible opportunities to partner with other like minded organisations in Bendigo. We aim to Celebrate & Acknowledge Women, participate in the White Ribbon & Gender Equality Days.
From Kathryn’s desk……..

Talent Spotting: Can you sing? Dance? Play a musical instrument? Recite a poem? Do stand-up comedy? The M&P committee is keen to use the talents of various mem-bers to entertain us at our December meeting. We know that there are some members who sing and or play/are learning to play a musical instrument for instance. Please contact Anita or another of the M&P committee soon if you'd like to participate in our end of year celebration.

New Badges: Since the re-branding of the Zonta logo and message earlier this year, new badges have been ordered and will be available at the August meet-ing. I am indebted to Ina at Langwar-rin Trophies for her willingness to spend as much time as necessary via phone calls and emails to get the colour, font, size, etc just right and to send through numerous samples to me to make the final decision easi-er. Wear them with pride!

You will note on the Treasurer's Report that we paid for 30 dinners at the last meeting but only 26 people paid. This was due to some people not advising they were an apolo-gising and therefore having to pay for the numbers given to the Green Olive.

37 BREAST CUSHIONS MADE !!
Thank you to the Zontians who were able to attend the breast making day on Saturday July 11th. We had a very successful day achieving 37 breast cushions. A great effort from the small band of workers able to attend. A big thank you to Rosalie’s students Shuming & Jingfeng as they were a wonderful help as well. Sue would also like to thank Ann and those who worked behind the scene in readiness for the sewing bee, it was much appreciated.

Thinking of Marian as she
endures the tough days of her treatment. Pleasing to hear
that the treatment is reducing pain. Keeping you in our
thoughts Marian.
Many members sent their condo-lences to Anita on the recent death of her sister Margaret. Anita says” Thank you to members for your condolences. Your thoughtfulness is appreciated.
Many of our members have been, or are, travelling at the moment.
x Annette & Crawford are in FNQLD enjoying the northern Australian winter warmth.
x Kathryn has recently been on a family trip to NZ x Bernadette & Richard are off to Uluru & Alice Springs—hope the
nights are not too cold! x Sue Hinton is in York, visiting family and being introduced to her new
grandson, Finley James. She finished her beautiful hand knitted blan-ket that many of us saw at a breast cushion workshop
x Gay writes from Paris: We left our luggage in Paris and took a fast
train trip to Lyon (where our granddaughter attended school for six weeks last year) and then onto Annecy. We spent a night in each city before returning to Paris. Lyon was interesting but when you come to Nice next year - you must stay in Annecy for a short break. It is so beautiful. I have attached some photos of Annecy. We leave here for Copenhagen where we start our Baltic Cruise to St. Petersburg. Then on to Bergen to see the Fiords in Norway before returning home via London.
x Dale had a fantastic trip to Maubisse in East Timor sharing many ‘arty
projects’ with the local school children x Naidene is off to sunny Perth where she will also catch up with San-
dra. x Ann has spent a few days in Brisbane as she was suffering ‘Grandma
withdrawal symptoms’.
