FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship for International Post Graduate Study
andFirstRand/Canon Collins Scholarship to the
University of Cambridge
• 2015 will be the 9th year that the scholarship is awarded
• scholarship value is R600 000 p.a. for a maximum of two years
• available to a South African citizen
• for study outside South Africa
• in any discipline at the internationally recognized University of their choice
• applicants must have applied and been accepted at the University of their choice, to be considered for the final judging
• for a Postgraduate degree.
• Excellence is the only criteria for selection.

• the successful candidate will have excelled academically in his or her chosen field of endeavour
• shown leadership qualities
• strength of character
• community minded endeavours; and
• the potential to be a destiny changer in his or her chosen field.
• there is no age limit, but, preference will be given to candidates under the age of 35.
• candidates who are currently, or have been studying overseas, will not be considered for this scholarship.
• the successful candidate has to return to South Africa for at least 5 years after completing his or her studies.
Scholarship Criteria3
• 2015 will be the 1st year that the scholarship is awarded
• partnership between FirstRand, Canon Collins Trust and the University of Cambridge
• full funding for one year to complete a master’s degree (across a wide range of subjects)
• the successful candidate will form part of the Global Leaders programme at the University of Cambridge, Clare Hall
• applicants must have applied to, and be accepted by the University of Cambridge, to be considered for the final judging
• applications to Cambridge open 1 Sept 2014 and close 31 January 2015
• this process will run concurrently with the FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar International Postgraduate Scholarship and the same criteria apply
• preference will be given to previously disadvantaged students

Scholarship Criteria5
• FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship for Postgraduate Study: R600 000
• FirstRand/Canon Collins Scholarship to Cambridge: full funding for a year
• FirstRand Assistance Bursaries: smaller amounts from R50 000 to R150 000
• assistance from Oppenheimer memorial trust.

• information will be available on www.firstrand.co.za and www.canoncollins.org.uk from mid November 2014
• applications, on both websites, will open on 16 December 2014 and close 26 February 2015
• applicants are evaluated by a panel comprised of senior staff in FirstRand, RMB, FNB, TSI, previous winners of the scholarship and representative from the Canon Collins Trust
• each application is reviewed by at least 3 panellists
• a preliminary ‘long list’ of around 30 applications is selected, of which 8 for the FirstRand/Canon Collins Scholarship to Cambridge, and interviewed either in person or per telephone
• specialists are asked for their opinion if necessary
• final shortlist of around 10 to 12 candidates, of which 2 or 3 will be for the FirstRand/ Canon Collins Scholarship to Cambridge, are selected and invited to Sandton for the final interview
• final announcement made before the end of May 2015.
