Fil?ocht Nua: New Poetry
AUGURIES
No more playing blind,
casting about
as if miscast in myth,
seeking
in the feathered beat
of birds some sign:
today, ears cupped
to the August sky, we
eyed with awe
the northern harrier's
scouring scowl across
a fresh-cut field.
How the domestic
turns exotic
in a time of change?
the heron's croaking
homeward thrust;
the kingfisher's breakneck
plunge in a crested bay;
the osprey's taloned
plummet a sun-flung blade!
Once again,
midsummer's swooping loops
of swallows reduced,
resigned to lining wires
along the boat-bound
lane,
our last week
reads like a field guide to the art of flight.
