Whatisajoeyandwhydotheyneedpouches?Theterm‘joey’referstothebabyofanymarsupial.Babypossums,gliders,kangaroos,wallabies,koalas,wombatsand bandicoots are all referred to as ‘joeys’. When hand-raising orphaned joeyswe try to imitate theway theirmotherwouldcareforthem,which includesprovidingthemwithawarmandsecurepouch inwhichthe joeywillliveuntilitisoldenough(…andbraveenough!)tostarttoventureawayfromitssafety.

AbouttheseinstructionsTherearevariouspatternsand instructionsavailableonline for joeypouches.Wehavecreated these instructionsbasedonpreferencesfromourownwildlifecarers.Ifyouaremakingpouchesforanotherwildlifegrouporcarer,wewouldsuggestyoucheckwiththemfirstiftheyhaveanyspecificpreferences.Makingjoeypouchesisagreatwaytonotonlyhelpyourlocalwildlife,butforless-experiencedsewers,theyareafantasticprojecttoimproveyoursewingskills.Theyareeasytomakeandwillgiveyouplentyofpractice!Becauseweoftenhavepeoplewith varying sewingknowledgeandexperiencemakingpouches,wehavedeveloped theseinstructions to cater for everyone. Experienced sewers will be able to skip through to the specifics, whilst less-experiencedsewerswillbenefitfromthestep-by-stepinstructionswithaccompanyingphotos.FabricchoicesBelowaresomeguidelinesforselectingfabrictomakejoeypouches:-

• Fabricmustbemadefromnaturalfibressuchas100%cotton.• Cottonjersey(t-shirt/knitfabric)andflannelettearethemostpreferredfabricsasthesearewarmandsoft.• Cotton sheets are also good choices, particularly during summermonths. Cotton sheets that have avery

smallpercentageofpolyesterareokay.• Donotusenon-natural(synthetic)fabricsastheydonot“breathe”andcancausethejoeystooverheat.• Unfurredjoeyshavedelicateskinsothefabricneedstobesoftsothatitdoesn’tcauseirritation.• Newfabricsarepreferredbutnotessential. Goodqualitysecond-handfabricssourcedfrombedlinencan

beused(e.g.flannelettesheets)butpleaseensurethattheyareingood,usablecondition.Sheetsthatarewellwornmayripeasilyonceanactivejoeyiswriggingaround!

• Justlikeanyotherbaby,ourmarsupialjoeysliketosuckle,sometimesontheirpouch,somaterialsthatdonotshedanylint,orpill,orhaveanyloosethreadsareessential.

• Thereisnopreferenceforspecificcoloursorfabricdesigns/patterns–ourjoeysdon’tmindifthefabricisaslightly“ugly”!

• If usingnew fabric, there isnoneed topre-wash the fabricor towash thepouchesbefore sending. Ourcarerswillwashbeforeusing.

• Ifusingsecond-handfabrics,pleasepre-washthefabric.

Wesuggestreadingthroughtheinstructionsbeforestartinganddecidewhichstyleofpouchyouwouldliketomake.Youcanthenprintoutjusttherelevantpagesforthatstyleofpouch.

Straightorcurvedbottom–doesitmatter?Somewildlifecarerspreferpoucheswithcurvedbottoms.Somecarersfeelthatjoeyscanget‘stuck’inthecornersofsquare/rectangularpouches.Theonly joeysatriskofdoingsowouldbethesmallerspeciessuchastinyglidersandantechinus.Makingthesmallestpouchsizeswithcurvedbottomswouldpreventthisfromoccurring.Somecarersbelievethatthecurvedbottomsareessentialforlargerspecies.Mostofourcarersdon’tmindeitherwayandmanyactuallypreferthestraightbottomsasitprovidesabitofextrawriggleroomforactivejoeys.Manyjoeys,suchaskoalas,havealittleteddybearintheirpouchwiththemaswellforcomfortsotheextraroomofthesquarebottomhelps.Joeyslayinallsortsofweirdpositions–upsidedown,ontheirsideandsnuggledupamongsttheirsiblings.If you are making hanging bags for kangaroos and wallabies, it is important that those are curved but theseinstructionsdonotcoverthosetypesofbags.

6PouchA-Step4–TrimthesidesUsingaruler,cuttingmatandrotarycutter,trimtheseamallowancetoaround0.5cm(1/8”).Ifyoudon’thavearotarycutter,usescissors.Youneedtotrimtheseamonbothsides.Ifyoudon’thaveafoldonthebottomandhaveastitchedseamonthebottomaswell,youwillneedtotrimthatalso.Trimmingtheedgehelpstomakethenextstepeasierandcreatesaneat‘frenchseam’.

PouchA-Step5–TurnandpressTurnthepouchoutsothattherightsidesarefacingoutwards.Usingapointedobject(e.g.chopstick),pokethecornersouttomakethemsitsquare.Givethepouchagoodpresswithanironandmakesurethattheseamsareflushonthesides.PouchA–Step6–FinalseamTofinishtheFrenchseam,sewa~1cm(¼”)seamlongeachside.Doingthiswillfullyencasetherawedgeoftheinsideseam.Ifyouhaveironedthepouch,youwillbeabletofeeltheedgeoftheseaminsideandusethatasaguidetoensurethattheseamisfullyenclosed.Oncestitched,theinsideofthepouchshouldhavenoraw/exposededges.

PouchD-Step5–FoldthetopofthepouchinsertFoldthepouchinsertoverthetopofthefleecepouch.Pressthepouchwithahotironmakingsurethatthefleeceissittingneatlyunderneaththecrease.Itisimportantthatthefleeceissittingcorrectly.Ifitisn’t,thenextstepwillnotworkcorrectly.PouchD-Step6–StitchthepouchinserttotheouterfleecepouchRunalineofstitchingabout~0.7cm(¼”)underthefoldatthetop.Thistopstitchshouldsecurethepouchinsert to the fleece, if they are lined upcorrectly.Ifyoursewingmachinehastheabilitytoremovethecovertoexposethe‘free-arm’,usethisfeatureasitwillmakestitchingmucheasier.

15PouchE-Step4–TurnyourpouchesTurnyourpouchinserttherightwayout.Exposedseamswillbeontheinside.Leavetheouterfleecepouchinsideout.Exposedseamswillbeontheoutside.Makesurethatthesideseamsofeachpouchmeet.Pushthepouchinsertdownintothefleecepouchmakingsurethatthepouchinsertissittingevenlyinthefleecepouchandthattheinsidebottomcornersmeetup.Ifdonecorrectly,thetopedgesshouldbeflushasperthephotobelow.
