Newsletter All are welcome! As a community of faith following Jesus’ commandment to love one another, the members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church are called to include all people seeking a relationship with Christ, regardless
of age, economic status, ethnic background, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity or marital status. We affirm with the Apostle Paul that "in Christ Jesus we are all children of God through faith, for all who were baptized into Christ have clothed themselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for we are all one in Christ Jesus." (Galatians 3:26-28)

Relay for life will be October 3, 2015 at Rancho Simi Tapo Community Park
(Lemon Park). RFL is the American Cancer Society's signature event. The Relay
is a 24 hour team event that raises awareness of cancer in the community and
raises funds to fight cancer. Throughout the event, RFL teams commit to keeping
at least one member walking the track . . . because cancer never sleeps. You only
need to commit to walking one hour. Cancer also knows no race, gender or age.
Anyone may walk, from the young to the old.
If you would like to join our team you can register at
www.main.acsevents.org/goto/svlcsv If you are interested in sponsoring one
of our walkers you may also do that at our website
www.main.acsevents.org/goto/svlcsv. If you have any questions please contact me.
There no finish line......until we find a cure!!

It is summer and time for backyard BBQ’s,
picnicking and hanging out around the pool. It is time for vacations, relaxation, and losing yourself in a
great book. What, you can’t find a book at home to read? Try our library. We have mysteries that are great spellbinders.
We have romances that are sweet and loving. We have action packed adventures books.
This summer, the book cart will have a free book exchange of fiction books for you to take home and read. When done please return the book to the basket in the library or replace it with another fiction book. All book donations are accepted. The book cart will also have fun activity books for young children. These books can also to be taken home but don’t have to be returned.
Enjoy your books and enjoy the summer!
***************************************************************************************
Summer is in full swing and boy has it been HOT
and H U M I D! With little rain we have had,
except for the unusual downpour over that
weekend in late July, and with the warmer than
usual weather during most of this year it doesn’t
even seem like we had a winter season. Now
that the summer vacations, trips to the beach
and camping excursions will soon be drawing to
an end, it won’t be long before the kids (and
their parents) will be preparing for the return to
school. That’s right, it’s time for those back-to-
school sales. Most schools resume August 17th.
Will your kids be ready? It will be time to prioritize, organize and accessorize! Perhaps the kids need new notebooks,
pens, pencils, paper or other school essentials? Wait a minute……I’m lost back in the days when you used to use those
materials for school work, now it’s computers and iPads. But I guess some kids still use these simple, primitive school
implements I mentioned above. If so, before you shop, don’t forget your scrip gift cards. We have cards for Staples,
Office Depot, Target, Walmart and Best Buy. Maybe it’s new clothing or shoes the kids need before going back to
school. We have cards for Kohl’s, Target, Sears, JC Penney, Ross, TJ Maxx, Walmart and many others. So if you
patronize any of these fine stores, or any of the other stores who participate in our scrip program, why not buy scrip gift
cards and use them to make your purchases. Some of the stores mentioned above are special order only for we don’t
have frequent requests for them or sell them on a regular basis, so order early and we can have cards within one to two
weeks. Remember that scrip is not just for gifts, but for your everyday purchases as well and that a percentage of every
gift card you purchase is returned to our church. So what better way to get the things that you want or need and at the
same time help support our church. It’s a win/win situation for you and SVLC. Visit us on the patio each and every
Sunday between the 8:3 and 9:45 services and the 9:45 and 11: services.

SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL @ Luther’s Attic…a thrift store which is located in
Moorpark at 189 High Street.
that helps support Good Shepherd Lutheran School.
Give donations, shop and/or volunteer your time!!
It all helps our Christian school ministry here in Simi Valley. The proceeds from the store are
split between three schools that receive financial support from the store. The financial split is
based on volunteer hours, so more volunteer hours from our church means stronger financial
support to Good Shepherd. For further information please call: 805-523-7188.

Samaritan Center of Simi Valley
Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church serves a meal to the less fortunate at the
Samaritan Center (located at 280 Royal Ave) on the
1st
Wednesday of every month from 4:00-6:00 pm
We need volunteers to buy and deliver food to the Samaritan Center,
AND…serve food or donate money *If you would like to help, please contact Yvonne Baird at 584-2521.
Thank you for your prayers and support for this important ministry.
SAMARITAN CENTER Many churches have programs that feed the hungry, but how many have three programs? Shepherd of the Valley has a long history of
helping the hungry and it is done solely through designated offerings. Each month we take a collection for World Hunger and remit
those funds to the ELCA, trusting them to disburse funds world-wide to feed the hungry. Each week, we host a meal in Eichele Hall “Still
Waters Café” that is prepared in our kitchen under the leadership of Ray & Sally Valderrama. This is our most visible feeding ministry
and it has been successful beyond the original vision, thanks to the generosity of the congregation and the Valderramas’ abil ity to write
grant requests and publicize the ministry’s needs throughout our community. Our third feeding ministry is a quieter one, but feeds the
most downtrodden amongst us at Samaritan Center. It is also funded through designated offerings.
Rick & Yvonne Baird have led this ministry for many years and on the
1st Wednesday of each month, 4 volunteers serve the folks coming to dinner that night. The meal is the same each month – fried chicken,
potato salad and fresh veggies, Kings Hawaiian rolls, juice and cookies. The guests are always very appreciative, love the meal and often
take plates to go. Because of the “quietness” of this ministry, it is also the least supported with designated offerings and at year-end, the
funds set aside for Samaritan Center were depleted. The monthly cost of the meal and supplies is approximately $180, and
monthly guests range from 20 – 40 persons. Please help to support this quiet ministry that is appreciated so much by those who
have no home and don’t have to go hungry because of our community’s efforts. Please consider a designated gift at some point
during the year. Thank you!
