Reasons to assess through MM creation

• Requires significant synthesis and reflection

• Reconfiguration of group work

• The translation of book knowledge into a more visual/aural form, own examples

• Collaborative skills, project management, problem solving, creativity

Reasons to assess through MM creation II• YouTube and podcasting etc

• Discussion about assessment in general reduces the hidden curriculum

• Authentic as multimedia may be increasingly used in organisations

• Reusable teaching content, produced by students

Problems• Might focus on technical proficiency and superficial

presentation not intellectual content• Education as spectacle

• Inequalities in familiarity with MM creation (e.g. based on gender)

• Any change in assessment methods produces uncertainty and the unexpected

• Coherence across the programme • Implications for all aspects of the module – time consuming

Choices

• Evaluation of pre-existing knowledge/skills

• Character and structuring of assessment package

• Software

• Form of support

• What assessment criteria & how decide on them

• Copyright
