settings– Write clearly and accurately– Speak clearly and coherently

Work Group Recommendations

• Read and comprehend a variety of text - 2012

• Write clearly and accurately - 2014

• Apply math in a variety of settings - 2016

• Speak clearly and coherently – To be phased-in at a later date

Board Action in June 2009

• Board voted to confirm reading requirement for graduating class of 2012

• Board voted to require proficiency in “apply math” essential skill for graduating class of 2014

• Board tabled discussion of writing and speaking essential skill to August retreat.

Infrastructure for Assessment Essential Skills

• Professional Development– Web presentations on work samples and

state scoring guides

– Regional trainers are available around the state; partnership with ESDs

Infrastructure for Assessment Essential Skills• Recordkeeping and Reporting for

each Graduate– In 2008-2009 the state began to communicate

data reporting requirements

– In 2011-2012 districts must submit data regarding method used to demonstrate proficiency in the required Essential Skills:

• OAKS• Work Samples scored locally• Work Samples scored externally (not the state)• Other Standardized Assessments (e.g. ACT, PLAN,

etc.)
