    Blackbird Quartet toperform Jan. 16 & 17

    The Blackbird Quartet, com-prised of musicians fromOakwood High School, will per-form in the Schuster CenterWintergarden from 7-7:45 p.m. onFriday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan.17 as part of the Stars ofTomorrow program prior to theDayton Philharmonic Orchestraconcert.

    The quartet has been perform-ing at public and private eventsthroughout the region since 2006,They are members of the DaytonPhilharmonic Youth Orchestra, the

    Dayton Philharmonic JuniorString Orchestra, Muse Machine,Oakwood High School Orchestra,and Giving Strings.

    Among their music selectionswill be Mozart’s Quartet in CMajor, K. 157 and Beethoven’sQuartet in C Minor, Op. 18, #3 aswell as other light classicalfavorites. The Blackbird Quartet’sperformances in the Wintergardenare free and open to the public. At8 p.m., violinist Rachel BartonPine will perform with the DaytonPhilharmonic Orchestra.

    ‘Unchained II’ at Link Gallery Community art project begins at DVAC

    Dr. Franklin Cox, cello profes-sor at Wright State University, willperform “The New Cello,” a pro-gram of avant-garde and experi-mental solos for cello at St. PaulCatholic Church, 308 Phillips St.in Yellow Springs, at 7:30 p.m. onWednesday, Jan. 14. Tickets at thedoor will be $10 adults, $5 stu-dents.

    The program, drawn fromworks which Dr. Cox has per-formed on tour in Europe and the

    U.S., includes HelmutLachenmann’s Pression, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf’s L’AngeNouveau, Michael Finnissy’s DoveFigary, and Richard Barrett’s DarkAges, which requires two bows.Dr. Cox will perform Bach’s CMajor Suite in an “extended justintonation” devised by BenJohnston, and two of his own com-positions, Recoil andClairvoyance.

    Dr. Cox, a student of Gary

    Hoffman, Janos Starker and PeterWiley, is the author of many schol-arly articles on extended techniqueand innovative compositionalstyles. He has made several record-ings and was a featured speakerand performer at the famousDarmstadt Festival.

    This year’s theme isUnderstanding Identity - and whoamong us has not at some pointstruggled with the question of

    “who am I, really?” It’s one of thetimeless themes for art, of course.

    You don’t have to be an artist(or a member of DVAC) to partic-ipate. We invite everyone to to bea part of the 2009 REACHCommunity Art Project by mak-ing a “quilt block” about yourself.We make it easy by providing thematerials and artists to lead theway during four public work-shops.
