Members’ Show (cont. from page 1): At the awards luncheon, Judge Meghan Martin shared her 5 winning selection criteria: Beauty (in eye of beholder); technical skills; inherent meaning that elicits emotions; uniqueness (does it distract or engage); and does the artist fulfill their intent (to evoke emotion or carry out intent; palette that was pleasing/harmonious).
Many thanks to the team of Artists Workshop Members who volunteered their time and talents to put together this year’s Members’ Show: • Taking in art/putting show together: Nancy Hagood, Carson Kapp, Shirley
Pittman, Gail Waters, Mary Peschel-Herlehy, Mary Gerlach, & John Hagood.• Luncheon: Alicia Oestmann, Gail Waters, Sallee Langley, Sue Stoddart, Mary

“Landfill Harmonic” Film Premiere & Silent Art Auction (cont. from page 1) Valeh LevyMark you calendars for our first film premiere and silent art auction fundraising event! Our members
are invited to donate art for the silent auction. The “Landfill Harmonic” fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. at the Museum of Arts and Sciences Root Auditorium in Daytona. We wanted to reach a broader audience and the 255 seat Root Auditorium is a great venue! Collaboration is the name of this game and delicious food will be catered by the Culinary Academy of the Students of Volusia County’s Teacher of the Year, Chef Jason Kester, and the Museum will sell wine and soft drinks.
The film we are screening has just been released and it has won top awards including Audience Favorite at 21 out of 22 worldwide film festivals! The documentary is an inspiring story which follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan youth musical group that plays beautiful symphonic music on instruments made entirely out of garbage from the largest landfill in South America which their town is built around. “The film is a testament to the transformational power of music and the resilience of the human spirit”. You can learn more and watch the trailer here: www.landfillharmonicmovie.com
To donate an original framed work of art for the silent auction, follow the instructions on the flyer created by Gertrude (Trudy) Havu (at the Studios), or contact her at 386-957-4610 or 207-233-7127. Artwork drop-off date at the Studios is March 23, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
We want this to be a celebratory win-win first time fundraiser and the proceeds will benefit adult and youth art outreach programs at Artists’ Workshop and also, our partner Marine Discovery Center who helped us tremendously in our darkest hour when the roof was destroyed.Thank you all in advance and we hope for a great event!
To be a sponsor of this event or to help out, contact Valeh Levy at valehlevy@aol.com, or 386-478-3709.

ESTABLISHED 1958
In MemoriamMarilynne J. Roland
The Artists’ Workshop mourns the loss of a dear, long-time devoted member, and past president Marilynne Roland (age 94). Marilynne passed away on January 18, 2017. She was born on April 10, 1922, in Jersey City,
New Jersey. When Marilynne first moved to New Smyrna Beach, she worked in both, the editorial and advertising departments, of the Daytona Beach and the Miami newspapers, before starting a second career in the fine arts. In the art community, not only did she become a renowned artist, but also a teacher, mentor, judge, and panel moderator. She participated in the public television art series programs.
In 1985, she became president of the Florida Watercolor Society and remained a board member. She was twice president of the Artists’ Workshop and was a consultant for the organization, as well as a member of the steering committee for Atlantic Center for the Arts and Harris House gallery and programs. She also had signature memberships in both, the Florida and Southern Watercolor Societies. The highlight of her art career was the invitation from Disney to be one of 12 participating artists for Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival. During her participation of 8 years, she was commissioned to do the poster for the event in 2003.
Our deepest sympathies go out to all her family and friends. Her complete obituary can be found online at:www.legacy.com/obituaries/news-journalonline/obituary.aspx?page=lifestory&pid=183677283 (courtesy Daytona News-Journal )

18th Annual High School Art Show Liz ClaytonThe Artists’ Workshop, Inc. is sponsoring its 18th Annual High School
Exhibit at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library. This is a very important part of our ongoing youth outreach programs. All are invited to the awards ceremony to be held Sunday, May 7, 2017, from 2 - 4 P.M. The Artists’ Workshop supports the local High School Arts program by providing funds for art supplies as well as providing refreshments for the annual awards ceremony. The show will be up at the NSB Library through the month of May. Last year the exhibit showcased 63 original works of art by local students in grades 9 - 12.
NOTE: We rely on the generosity of our members to support our High School Art Show awards program! Last year you we presented cash awards ($550 total) to 15 winning students. You can mail donations directly to the Artists’ Workshop, Inc., Attn: Treasurer, Shirley Pittman, P.O. Box 1194, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32170-1194. We will also be collecting your contributions at our next general member meeting on March 1. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

From the PresidentLiz Clayton
Dear Members of The Artists’ Workshop,
Congratulations to everyone who won an award at the Annual Members’ Show. Once again we have shown the community the quality of instruction that is being offered at The Artists’ Workshop. The committee that made all the arrangements which included locating Harris House, hanging the show, arranging the luncheon and reception, designing and sending out the prospectus and inviting the judge should be commended for a job well done! We continue to display our talents as artists, not only at the Members’ Show, but in our galleries on Canal Street and our studio gallery as well! Thank you and congratulations to all who participated.
Liz
