1.1 Welcome Slide

Notes:

The overall goal of this module is to increase the awareness and develop an educational tool for the nursing professionals in support of the Joint Commission requirements for Beyond-Use-Date (BUD) labeling of patients medication. The module intention is to increase learners understanding of the correct process and best practices of assessing and with a goal of eliminating errors while promoting patient safety in the timely delivery of patient care.

1.2 What is BUD

Notes:

The goal of this BUD module is to increase the awareness of nursing professional

learners with the knowledge needed to accurately and correctly date, initiate and time

after which administration of a sterile medication has been given to the patients. The

module will also give the learner a structure for effective communication and

demonstrate teamwork with a two nurse check to identify a patient is the fundamental

first step to providing the accurate health care service.

5.2 Ronnie Nelson, RN begins preparing a medication IV bag in a patient

care area on

May 5, 2016, at 1400. Ronnie finishes preparing the sterile medication at

1410, applies a BUD label, proceeds immediately to patient’s bedside and

starts the 2-hour administration. Why did this sterile medication require a

BUD label?

(Multiple Choice, 10 points, 1 attempt permitted)

Correct Choice

Was the medication prepared outside the pharmacy’s clean room?

X The medication took longer than one hour to prepare and initiate administration?

Is the medication not completely and immediately administered?

The medications administration was delayed?

The initiation of the medication administration was delegated to someone other

than the person who prepared it?

Feedback when correct:

That's right! A medication that’s administered by someone other than the person who prepared

it DOES require a BUD label, but the initiation of this medications administration was not

delegated. The questions don't indicate whether another healthcare professional will oversee

the remainder of the administration, but another answer option is more accurate.

Feedback when incorrect:

Feedback when correct:

That's right! Reviewing the concept: Any sterile medication that is not completely and

immediately administered by the person who prepared it must be labeled with a BUD: initiation

of administration must occur within 1 hour of the time preparation began (in this case, spiking

the bag).

manufacturers based on when the product is

safe to use and will work as intended.

Date and time is determined by a healthcare

professionals based on time of preparation,

chemical stability and sterility limits.
